Welcome Welcome to Date with a Plate 2019 and the 20th Anniversary Commemoration of ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis. We are pleased that you are with us tonight as we recognize and support ABCD’s commitment to providing free, personalized emotional support to all those affected by breast cancer, from the newly diagnosed to those in treatment and on into survivorship. ABCD has long understood that breast cancer is so much more than scans, biopsies, surgeries and treatment plans. Getting through it not only requires a medical team, but also compassionate emotional support from peers who know what it’s like to hear those four lifechanging words, “You have breast cancer.” Since 1999, more than 98,000 people across the United States and abroad have relied on ABCD to answer questions, provide guidance, and create highly personalized matches with breast cancer survivors and caregivers who have trained to become ABCD Mentors. Our vision is that every woman or man affected by breast cancer knows about ABCD and has access to our free services. Our goal is to double the number of people served each year. Tonight, we ask you to commit to helping ABCD raise awareness and continue to offer free services to all those in need of our support. It is estimated that 210,000 women will be diagnosed with a new breast cancer in 2019; 5,000 of those women will live in the State of Wisconsin. This is an opportunity for you to help us continue making a positive difference for those facing one of the greatest challenges of their lives. Thank you, Wayne C. Oldenburg Board President

Founding Vision > >> > Twenty years ago, anchorwoman, television reporter, and Emmy award-winning journalist Melodie Wilson Oldenburg founded ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis. She did it in a manner similar to how she went public in 1992 with her own breast cancer diagnosis – determined, fearless, with a little stubbornness, a pinch of bravado and lots of compassion and empathy. When diagnosed, Melodie initially took an attitude of defiance toward the disease and decided to arm herself with information and Melodie Wilson Oldenburg treatment plans, medical options, and avenues for non-clinical support. She quickly found the (1950 – 2009) “avenues for non-clinical support” lacking and realized if she felt this way, many other people must have felt the same. A true believer that you cannot blame your circumstances if you don’t try to change them and with a strong commitment to making a difference, Melodie set out to find a way to make support available to everyone affected by a breast cancer diagnosis. Her public persona afforded her the unique opportunity to reach people - and anyone who knew her knows she would “never waste an open microphone.” So, speak she did, engage she did, and as a result, a group of resilient, brilliant, compassionate women who believed in the “power of one-to-one” came together and organized ABCD. Now women, men, families and friends dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis have an avenue of support through ABCD’s Mentor Corps of professionally trained and staff supported survivors and caregivers who provide free, personalized, one-to-one support to people all across the country and abroad. Melodie was 49 when she launched ABCD and only 59 when we lost her to breast cancer. She believed with all her heart that no one should go through breast cancer alone, and her ten years of dedication, grace and everlasting spirit gave immeasurable encouragement and support to so many. Today, when those facing breast cancer feel comforted, acknowledged, and heard because of their Mentors, we see Melodie’s impact and legacy. As we commemorate ABCD’s 20th Anniversary, please remember, in the words of Melodie: “There is still so much more for us to do.”

Mardak>>>>Challenge In 2017, Keith Mardak, Chairman and CEO of the Hal Leonard Corporation and his wife, Mary Vandenberg, offered ABCD a fouryear, $2 million challenge grant to launch the Mardak 2020 Breast Cancer Initiative. This comprehensive outreach program aims to increase awareness about ABCD’s free, personalized, emotional support for anyone impacted by breast cancer. Matched in part with ABCD’s own fundraising, this grant is the largest single gift in the organization’s history. To ensure receipt of the full match, ABCD must meet satisfactory performance metrics, including raising an additional $250,000 by the end of year two, to be considered for another $1 million contribution in years three and four. ABCD is thrilled to announce that we reached the financial and service growth goals in Year #1. With your help tonight, we can set the stage for a successful Year #2. As we move forward, our vision is that every woman or man affected by breast cancer knows about ABCD and has access to our free services, starting in Southeastern Wisconsin and building to the national level.
