FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Theater-goer, Welcome to the Northwestern University Settlement House and to our award-winning performing arts program, Adventure Stage Chicago. We are back from an astonishing and emotional fall production of And A Child Shall Lead with another soaring adventure tale that is sure to capture your imagination. Experiencing live performance is an essential aspect of a healthy and vital community. When we opened the theater in 1998, we envisioned a place where our community could come together to celebrate its diversity and challenge its perception of itself and what it is capable of accomplishing. By focusing on young people and the adults in their lives, Adventure Stage Chicago is providing an empowering, self-reflective and participatory experience that, we hope, is relevant to your lives now. Adventure Stage Chicago is not a theater company in residence. Rather, it is one critical piece of a dynamic, multifaceted social service organization that has been serving Chicagoans for the last 120 years with programs like AmeriCorps, Emergency Services, Head Start, House in the Woods Camp, and the newly opened Rowe Elementary School. By opening doorways to opportunity, the Settlement is dedicated to helping our neighbors overcome the obstacles that keep them from living a self-sufficient lifestyle. I hope that you leave here invigorated and inspired to dialogue amongst your family members about your experience. And I encourage you to let us know what you think so we can continue to make a difference. Sincerely, Ron Manderschied

F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R - A M A N DA D E L H E I M E R The first time I read Sinbad: The Untold Tale, I fell in love with it. In some ways, it’s a typical hero journey, and mirrors many stories that we all recognize, but I think that this particular version of it is really unique. The language is beautiful, the characters are silly and fun, and it tells a really great story—a lovely, serious story about two young people coming of age missing one (or both) of their parents. It explores what it feels like to feel “out of place”, what it means when you don’t really know who you are or where you come from, and how we can discover strengths and skills inside of ourselves even in the darkest and most hopeless of situations. Have you ever had a moment where you didn’t think you could do something, but you surprised yourself by discovering that you could? Or where someone else believed in you and their belief gave you the strength? I feel like that’s a big part of what this play is about: how we transform over the course of our lives, constantly re-inventing ourselves from year to year or moment to moment. In fact, for me, this play is all about transformation. We see it literally, as things magically transform from simple, everyday objects into items of great strength and power; but we also see it in how Sinbad and Ittifaq “grow up” over the course of the play, transforming from the humans they are into the humans that they want to be. As you watch the play, I’d love for you to think about that: how many different types of transformation can you spot? I’m also curious about what it means that Sinbad and Ittifaq are on this journey together. What do they accomplish as a team that they wouldn’t have been able to do by themselves? Would either of them have been successful if they’d gone on the quest by themselves? How does this affect their relationship? At the beginning of the play, they’re really at odds with each other, and are constantly at each other’s throats. But this changes as the play goes on. What do you think it is about people struggling together against something that’s bigger than themselves that brings us together? Has this ever happened to you? What did you learn about yourself by watching this story? Because that’s one of the most exciting things about sharing stories, I think—how much we can learn about ourselves while watching a story about somebody else. These are all big questions, but they’re all questions based in the story that we’ll be performing for you. After the curtain call, you’ll have a chance to talk with the actors, so save up your questions and comments and ideas, because we can’t wait to hear what you have to say!

THE CRITIC’S CORNER Now that you have experienced Sinbad: The Untold Tale, we want to hear from you. One of our guiding principles here at Adventure Stage is that theater inspires dialogue. You may have had the chance to participate in one of our Curtain Conversations with the cast. You can continue the conversation on our website (www.adventurestage.org) through our blog, The Adventure Page. The blog includes The Critic’s Corner where you can tell us what you thought about the show and continue probing the questions posed during our Curtain Conversation. We’re waiting to hear from you! 4 Adventure Stage Chicago

PUTTING THE PLAY INTO CONTEXT - THE WORLD OF ANCIENT BAGDAD Sinbad is a popular character from the famous collection of stories; 1001 Arabian Nights. But what does Arabian mean? Where is Arabia? These pages will try to answer these questions and more as we share a peek into the world of the Sinbad stories. Sinbad the Sailor- A fictional sailor from Basrah, Iraq, who lived in Baghdad during the Abbasid Caliphate (750-1258AD). Sinbad is the hero of a story-cycle of Middle Eastern origin that is a part of the 1001 Arabian Nights. During his voyages throughout the seas east of Africa and south of Asia, he had 7 fantastic adventures going to magical places, meeting monsters, and encountering supernatural phenomena. Arabian- Originating from the peoples of the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding territories whose primary language is Arabic, whose religion is Islam and who inhabit much of the Middle East and northern Africa. A list of Arabian countries from largest population to smallest: Egypt, Sudan, Algeria, Morocco, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Syria, Tunisia, Somalia, Libya, Jordan, Eritrea, Lebanon, Palestine, United Arab Emirates, Mauritania, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Djibouti, Bahrain, Comoros, and Western Sahara. Abbasid Caliphate (750-1258 AD)- Descended from Muhammad’s uncle, Abbas, they founded Baghdad as their capital and developed it into a major centre of the arts and sciences. Our play takes place in Iraq during this time. Caliph- The civil and religious leader of a Muslim state considered to be a representative of Allah on earth. Iraq- The area known as Iraq today was called Mesopotamia up until the end of World War I (1914–1918). Baghdad, the capitol city, was able to feed its enormous population and to export large quantities of grain because they were able to control the flow of the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers. The Abbasids reconstructed the city’s canals, dikes, and reservoirs, and drained the swamps around Baghdad, which freed the city of malaria. The history of Islam in Iraq goes back almost Adventure Stage Chicago 9

PUTTING THE PLAY INTO CONTEXT (cont.) 1,400 years to the lifetime of Muhammad (570-632AD). By 630 AD Muhammad and his followers had won control of his homeland, Mecca and had spread Islam throughout Arabia. Allah- The standard Arabic word for God. Koran- The Muslim Holy Book, believed to be the word of Allah revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Women in Arab countries- Women are not allowed the same rights and freedoms as men. They could not vote, defy their father’s choice of husband, or be allowed to divorce. Throughout the last century women have been gaining rights all over the Middle East, and Iraq has been leading the way. However Iraqi women still have not gained equality, which is largely due to Islamic influence. If true gender reform is to take place, it will have to be within the context of Islamic law. Food in Iraq- Iraq doesn’t have a unique cuisine; instead it borrows dishes from other countries like Turkey (a lot of lamb, rice, and yogurt) and Iran (cooking fruits with beef and poultry.) For the 95% of Iraqis who practice Islam, eating pork and drinking alcohol are forbidden. A typical Iraqi meal would begin with coffee and tea before the appetizers and salads - known as mezza. The main course would include meat, either in a kebab, in a stew or in a wrap, often containing lamb. Another popular staple is falafel (fried chickpea patties usually served with salad The fast of Ramadan is celebrated the entire ninth month of the Muslim year. This means for the whole month, no food or water may be consumed from sunrise to sunset. Muslims believe fasting makes them stronger in their faith and helps them understand how it feels to be poor and hungry. At the end of Ramadan comes a three-day festival called Eid al-Fitr when friends and family gather to pray and feast.
