Welcome, You might wonder how a theatre company that chose a show like Killer Joe - featuring a simulated sex act with a chicken leg, or Kid Sister - climaxing in a gruesome death using a gardening tool, could end up performing a more tender play like Deirdre O’Connor’s Assisted Living? At Profiles, we answer a simple question when choosing our plays: Is this something we’d like to see? I’ve found more and more that the shows we end up producing connect to what I’m experiencing or contemplating in my own life. Of course, I’ve never considered various ways to decapitate my neighbors, but even our darkest plays fascinate me by acknowledging the duality of human nature. Many of the characters in our plays have an extreme capacity for empathy and tenderness but in a second turn selfish and cruel. Nonetheless, I believe in our plays, as in real life, people struggle to do the best they can or the only thing they know how to do, until someone or something changes them. Directing Assisted Living has forced me to recognize something that I have been denying for a while—my parents are getting older. They live only four hours away, yet my visits home seem less frequent. Like everyone, I get busy. When I make it home I notice subtle differences that might go unnoticed if I saw my parents each week. They move a little more slowly and become short of breath walking down the hallway. More often than not, talk turns to funerals, what friends or relatives have cancer, which new aches and pains afflict them or how many new medications they’re taking. Thankfully, my older sister lives near them and she steps up when someone has a crisis, but my ability to balance career, family and my responsibility to them could get a lot more complicated. Deirdre’s play encouraged me to think about family and illustrated the unfortunate limits of self-reliance. Growing up, I learned to be fiercely independent. In fact, my family took pride in its autonomous existence. But like Assisted Living’s Anne and Jimmy, I’m slowly beginning to let others in, take chances and live life more fully. I’ve learned interdependence can be a sign of strength not weakness. Asking for help make us more human. I suppose we can all use a little assistance sometimes... Sincerely,
Joe Jahraus Artistic Director ASSISTED LIVING 3

Playwright Deirdre O’Connor Deirdre O’Connor spoke to Profiles’ literary manager Jeremy Hersh about letting go, returning to the well and why she doesn’t write internal monologues. Jeremy Hersh: This is the world premiere of Assisted Living, but because you live in New York and you’ve been so busy, you haven’t been able to watch the rehearsal process. Does it feel strange not to be involved? Deirdre O’Connor: It’s hard. It’s weird knowing it is happening and not being there, but I have confidence that it’s going to be terrific. You know, on the first day of rehearsal, if the writer is there, “What I love the actors ask questions about the about coming of things that aren’t on the page. And age stories is that the actors sort of think there’s a right and a wrong way to answer to we come of age these questions. If I’m there, I can’t multiple times in help but tell the actors about my secret back-stories, but honestly our lives.” -Deirdre I don’t like doing that. Because if O’Connor I didn’t write it on the page, then it’s only going to inform the actor’s choices, so I’d rather they answer those questions themselves because ultimately they will choose something that’s more meaningful to them. JH: This is the second time we have produced one of your plays at Profiles, you also wrote last season’s Jailbait. For me, both plays are, in different ways, about growing up. Is that parallel intentional? DO: What I like is the idea that every story you write overlaps and you’re working your way through certain ideas. And, what I love about coming of age stories is that we come of age multiple times in our lives. We have this sense that we come of age once, when we turn eighteen, but we live in a society where grown men are buying X-Boxes or Wiis or whatever it is people are playing now, so we’re actually holding on to childhood for a really long time. 8 Profiles Theatre

The actual marks of adulthood come when you have sex for the first time, when you get your first job or when you move out of your parent’s house. One of the marks of adulthood is when you lose your parents and you become a parent. In the case of Jimmy and Anne and really all four characters, they’re all going through various stages of late leaps into adulthood. JH: Let’s talk about your writing process. DO: When I start writing, I ask who are these characters and what do they want? Is it a comedy or a tragedy? I do a lot of writing and I let the characters tell me what the common thread is. They introduce themselves to me. I spend a lot of time with them and I let them tell me “what’s up.” It’s very slow. I don’t recommend it. I know this process sounds really fruity and weird, like I’m listening to the heavens or something, but when I write, I just see the ways in which the characters reveal themselves to each other and that’s what’s exciting for me. I think we reveal more of ourselves in a conversation with another person because of the ways we inadvertently reveal ourselves, especially when we are trying to conceal something. In our internal monologues, I think we do a lot of lying to ourselves.
“In our internal monologues I think we do a lot of lying to ourselves.” -Deirdre O’Connor
JH: If audiences left Assisted Living considering one question, what would you like that question to be? DO: The question I wrestled with while writing this was: Who defines us? Do we get to define ourselves or does the world define us? Anne and Jimmy see each other one way. But these people from outside the family see them as something completely different. But, neither of them believes this new perspective. So, are you defined by your family or by your life afterwards – your life in the “adult” world? Or do you ever get to just define yourself? Would the people in your life let you? I don’t know what the answer to this is. We all struggle with self-definition throughout our lives.

History
Profiles Theatre is a not-for-profit professional theatre company now celebrating its 23rd Anniversary Season of producing plays in Chicago. Founded in 1988 by five Eastern Illinois University alumni, the company was originally called Profiles Performance Ensemble. Profiles was in residence at the Wright College Theatre Building until 1990, when Artistic Director Joe Jahraus directed Profiles’ first play at the theatre’s current home 4147 N. Broadway - a hit production of David Mamet’s SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO. The following year, Associate Artistic Director Darrell W. Cox joined the ensemble. Darrell has a BFA in Theatre from Sam Houston State University in Texas and first performed with Profiles in their long-running production of Sam Shepard’s TRUE WEST. Profiles shortly thereafter became the resident company at the Broadway address, formerly known as Red Bones Theatre, and took over all management responsibilities for the 65-seat theatre. The ensemble officially changed the name of the company and of the theatre space to Profiles Theatre in 1995. In 2010, Profiles acquired the former Stage Left Theatre space at 3408 N. Sheffield, renaming it The Second Stage. The 55-seat theatre was renovated and maintained by Profiles as a viable, affordable performance space for young, emerging, and established itinerant companies as well as an alternative venue for Profiles’ extended runs. Today, Profiles still maintains a small, tightly knit ensemble whose other members include Eric Burgher (2003), Maryann Carlson (2011), Jeremy Hersh (2011), Greg Yaeger (1994), Sal V. Armano(1993), and Wayne Karl (1990). Profiles Theatre’s primary goal is to bring new works to Chicago that illuminate the determination and resiliency of the human spirit. They produce World, US and Midwest Premieres by promising new playwrights as well as established writers whose work has been seen around the globe. They take pride in carefully selecting scripts that combine integrity with risk, and are particularly drawn to playwrights with a unique narrative style and use of language. Profiles Theatre is committed to producing plays that tell a story in a captivating way, ones that will complement the ensemble and speak to their audience.
