F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R S
Many years ago when we made the decision to set our version of The Nutcracker! in America during the Great Depression, we never thought that it was a portent of things to come. Yet here we are, well into our own 21st century recession. The sweet little “orphans” in our show had to go without much and today we are all also tightening our belts and making hard decisions about what to cut out of our lives. Nonetheless, you are here, having made the choice that Entre Nous’ Nutcracker! is worth your time and your money. For that we are deeply grateful. We hope you enjoy our show as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. May you discover, as Clara does, that dreams really do come true.

Ballet Entre Nous 5
T H E C O M PA N Y Ballet Entre Nous was founded in 1985 by E. Marc Nevins who currently serves as the company’s Artistic Director. The company began by performing repertory pieces in Evanston. In 1986, Entre Nous joined forces with the Winnetka Community House and in December of that year, The Nutcracker! was presented for the first time. Due to its success, the company was invited back to perform an evening of Mr. Nevins’ choreography and The Nutcracker! again. The Nutcracker! has now become a holiday tradition at the Community House. Entre Nous has been seen at such Chicago area venues as the Athenaeum Theatre, Ruth Page Theatre, Palatine’s Cutting Hall, as a part of National-Louis University’s Weinstein Center for the Performing Arts Dance Series (Evanston) and at the Coronet Theatre (Evanston). In addition to the company’s main concerts, Entre Nous has performed for children’s groups, nursing homes and synagogues throughout the Chicago area, as well as having appeared at the Jewish Folk Arts Festival. Entre Nous was commissioned by the Chicago Office of Fine Arts to create and perform Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) at the Cultural Arts Center. The company has developed over sixty original works including several story ballets and a wide range of musical selections that incorporate a strong technical background with a contemporary style. The production team includes technicians and artists who have worked with many prestigious local companies, in both dance and theatre. One of the company’s innovations is the use of sign language within the context of the ballets. Mr. Nevins has always been intrigued with sign language and found its expressiveness and beauty compelling. E. Marc Nevins Founder, Artistic Director A dancer himself, Mr. Nevins has more than thirty years experience both on stage and working as a choreographer. Originally from Winnetka, he began his training at Evanston School of Ballet and New Trier High School. He continued on to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, the University of Alabama, and the School of American Ballet in New York. Mr. Nevins has appeared with such companies as American Ballet Theatre, the Joffrey Ballet, Ballet West, and locally, the Evanston 6 Ballet Entre Nous
Concert Ballet, Oak Park Ballet, Masi Ballet Chicago, and Lake Shore Dance Theatre. As a choreographer, his work has been performed by the School of Chicago Ballet, Lake Shore Dance Theatre, Buffalo Grove Players, Theatre 219, Glenview Theatre, Barrington Arts Council, Des Plaines Theatre, Windreams and Wildflowers, Group For, Devonshire Players and the Illegitimate Players. He was commissioned by Season of Concern to choreograph a piece for A Time to Act, presented by the Chicago suburban theatre community as a benefit to raise funds for those living with AIDS. Mr. Nevins has participated in workshops for deaf and hard-of-hearing dancers and has worked with Bernard Bragg, founder of National Theatre of the Deaf. As Artistic Director of Ballet Entre Nous, Mr. Nevins has choreographed more than sixty works and successfully guided the company throughout its twenty two year history.
