A B O U T L U N A N E G R O DA N C E T H E AT E R Since its inception in 1999, Luna Negra Dance Theater has established itself as a significant and vital component of Chicago’s arts and cultural community. Founded by Cuban-born dancer and choreographer Eduardo Vilaro, Luna Negra celebrates the richness and diversity of Latino culture through the creation of works by contemporary Latino choreographers and through intensive, hands-on education programs that encourage discovery and exploration of personal and community identity. Steering away from stereotypes and folkloric representations, the company performs works of contemporary Latino dance with energy, power, and passion. Luna Negra makes its home in Chicago at the Harris Theater in Millennium Park, and tours nationally and internationally. Under the leadership of award-winning artistic director Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, Luna Negra Dance Theater has risen to the forefront of American contemporary dance. The company has commissioned and presented works by acclaimed Latino choreographers such Alejandro Cervera (Argentina), Michelle Manzanales (Mexico), Fernando Melo (Brazil), Annabelle Lopez Ochoa (Colombia), Gustavo Ramírez Sansano (Spain), and Eduardo Vilaro (Cuba). Luna Negra also collaborates with artists from other disciplines to create richly textured and highly original works of contemporary dance theater. Recent collaborations have resulted in exceptional projects with world renowned artists and organizations, including jazz legend Paquito D’Rivera, Peruvian singer Susana Baca, the Turtle Island Quartet, Chicago Sinfonietta, Grant Park Music Festival, Ravinia Festival, and Tiempo Libre. Walk-In is representative of my current thoughts and process in choreography. One definition of “walk-in” is the notion of a person whose spirit has departed from his body and has been replaced by a new soul, either temporarily or permanently. In the Young Auditorium

same way that a body may be taken over by a spirit, a human can be inhabited by powerful emotions that influence his behaviour and the way he perceives the world. Dance provides a means for me to express my imagination in a non-verbal way. It is an embodied art form and therefore elicits embodied responses, which may be corporeal, instinctive, psychological and / or emotional. Every so often we experience dance in a sensory way which allows us to grasp real meaning from a performance, almost without being able to put it into words. This exciting and complex transaction between performer and audience is the nucleus of my work; what interests me is the production and communication of meaning through performance. We make use of theatrical elements such as the muscular and choreographed actions of a trained body, the physical environment in which the performance takes place, the soundscape, light design and costumes. With these elements, we attempt to connect with human emotions by examining the various mental states and activities that possess us in the midst of our daily routines.
The exploration of the theme, as well as the development of the physical vocabulary, has been a collective act in which all parties involved in the creative process proposed ideas and solutions. I invite you to “walk in” to this slice of everyday life we have created. - Fernando Melo -INTERMISSIONNaked Ape North American Premiere in 2011 – Luna Negra Dance Theater Created in 2009 - Nederlands Dans Theater I as a part of TODAYSART Festival Choreography......................................................................................... Exposed in front of the audience with care, trust and hope as much as fear and insecurity. Just like a parent of new born baby. Since then my ‘baby’ reached the age of an adult, actually to be exact, one year older than that. It has become a part of my daily life in which I’ve been lucky enough to be able to do what I love the most - bring it on stage all over again and again. This performance is a little birthday party of my work as a choreographer and I have the opportunity to thank to all who (and what) has been a significant inspiration, help and support for me. I wouldn’t be celebrating today without my mom, the directors, teachers, choreographers, friends, dancers, people who love me, who I love, people who hurt me, people who I pass on street and observe in subway, politics, Alicante, San fulgencio, washing machine, cinnamon rolls, melon, lemonade, Barcelona, karate, flowers, television, Chicago, animals, designers, music, books, theatre, architecture, water,... -Gustavo Ramírez Sansano PROFILES Choreographers Fernando Hernando Magadan (Zaragoza, Spain) originally trained as a gymnast and then began his dance studies at the Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Clasica in Madrid. A B O U T T H E G O L D E N D R AG O N AC R O B AT S The Golden Dragon Acrobats represent the best of a time honored tradition that began more than twenty-five centuries ago. The Golden Dragons are recognized throughout the United States and abroad as the premiere Chinese acrobatic touring company of today. The reputation of the company is solidly rooted in a commitment to the highest of production values and an attention to artistic details that is unparalleled in the art form. World renowned impresario Danny Chang and choreographer Angela Chang combine award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty. Acclaim and Dedication like No Others In November 2005, the Golden Dragon Acrobats made their Broadway debut to a sold out audience at the New Victory Theater, New York’s ultimate theater for kids and families. Their Broadway run over the next six weeks led to adoration and standing ovations from audiences of all ages and universal critical acclaim from the New York press. The run was highlighted by the Golden Dragons receiving two most prestigious New York Drama Desk nominations -- Danny Chang for Unique Theatrical Experience and Angela Chang for Best Choreography. The company returns to the New Victory this season as the only Chinese acrobatic troupe to ever make a return appearance on Broadway. The 2007-08 tour marked the 29th year of continuous touring in the United States for the Golden Dragon Acrobats. With the company’s main office based in Dallas, TX, the Golden Dragons have traveled around the world to all 50 states and to over 65 countries on five continents. The members of the current touring company, hailing from Hebei, China, have performed in all 48 lower U.S. states within the last three years alone to sold-out audiences in nearly every major market in the country. The Golden Dragons remain the only Chinese acrobatic company touring year-round in the United States. An Art Form beyond Compare The ancient art of Chinese Acrobatics is an old and long running tradition that began in China well over two thousand years ago. Over its long and rich history it has developed as one of the most popular art forms among the Chinese people. While many historical records provide evidence for the development of Chinese acrobatics as far back as the Xia Dynasty (4000 years ago), it is most commonly held that the art form did not become wildly popular until approximately 2,500 years ago when it began to capture the attention of the country’s powerful emperors. During the Warring States Period (475 BC - 221 BC) acrobatics in China began to evolve from the working lives of its people. Instruments of labor, such as tridents and wicker rings, and articles of daily use such as tables, chairs, jars, plates and bowls began to be used as performance props. This unorganized form of entertainment and leisure eventually evolved into a form of performance that became recognizable to the Chinese people. During the Han Dynasty (221 BC - 220 AD) these rudimentary acts of acrobatics developed into the “Hundred Plays”. More content and varieties were quick to develop. Musical accompaniment was soon added to the performance as interest in the art 12

form grew among the emperors. During the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 AD) the number of acrobats greatly increased as the skills of each individual performer slowly began to become much more precise and amazing. Since these early times, acrobatics have evolved into many forms of performances including dance, opera, martial arts, and sports. However, the impact of Chinese acrobatics goes far beyond the boundaries of performance as it has served an important role in the cultural exchange between China and Western nations including the United States. The citizens of China continue to present their acrobatic art for the world today, as it portrays the hard working nature of their people and sets forth an example of the rich traditions of Chinese culture. Be a Part of the Experience The Golden Dragon Acrobats are proud to represent the very best of this time-honored tradition. 2008 marked the highlight of the Golden Dragons’ touring career with their 30th anniversary United States tour. That year also saw the company’s home nation of China host the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing with the theme slogan “One World One Dream.” The reflection of that slogan epitomizes the essence and the universal values of what all of us who love the arts hope to foster -- Unity, Friendship, Progress, Harmony, Participation and Dream. The Golden Dragons remind us that we belong to the same world and we share the same aspirations and dreams. We most sincerely thank you for coming to this performance and for taking part in the experience of something spectacularly beautiful.

DEIRDRE FLINT www.deirdreflint.com Playing guitar, bass, and piano, Deirdre hangs out at the intersection where folk music and stand-up comedy collide. Lauded by The New York Times and The Christian Science Monitor, Billboard Magazine says “Flint is a crack-you-up lady who knows how to deliver underdog messages with panache.” With two CD projects to her credit, she has performed at The Kennedy Center, The Philadelphia Folk Festival, and has won such premier songwriting contests as The Kerrville Folk Festival and Falcon Ridge. Her wildly popular anthem “The Boob Fairy” has been featured on FX’s Nip/Tuck, while other up to the minute comedy commentary songs have been included in Ireland’s “What Not to Wear,” TLC’s “A Dating Story,” Great Britain’s “Spendaholics,” and the documentary, or if you will frockumentary “Always a Bridesmaid.” Her quirky songs about life’s little tragedies have been heard on over 100 public and commercial radio stations including the infamous Dr. Dimento Radio Hour. In addition to teaching songwriting at The National Guitar Workshop, Deirdre has performed on the nationally syndicated “Bob and Sheri Show,” and NPR’s “The World Café,” where her quick wit has kept her a favorite of DJ’s around the country. Earning a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from The University of Pennsylvania, teaching is her first love earning her a commission to pen a children’s song honoring the town of Norfolk, VA. Our “Sporty Babe” has completed the Sherox Triathlon and The New Jersey Marathon. However, she claims she does it for the free donuts at the end. Deirdre lives in Philadelphia with her dog Dagger, producing digital graphic art, and creating amazing cartoon videos for composers and performers.
