L E T T E R F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C A N D E X E C U T I V E D I R E C TO R S Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us to celebrate the music of the Beatles and love in its many forms. It’s been a wonderful way to celebrate turning thirty. Recently, our nation’s dialogue on love and equality has taken center stage and evolved into one of increased inclusiveness and understanding, and CGMC is proud to continue to lend its own voice to this everlarger chorus.. Thirty years of embracing diversity Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus is an inclusive family to our 150-plus active singing members (now both gay and ally, male- and female-identified). And we add to this chosen-family our loyal long-time subscribers, generous donors, supportive audiences, and (thankfully for more and more of us), our cheering and loving biological families. And we can’t forget our over 1200 alumni –who drop back in to sing with us from time-to-time. Every member of our community is a part of us and represented on this stage tonight. CGMC would not be here without you, and we thank you for making us stronger than we’ve ever been. We were born this way CGMC began in 1983 with the expressed purpose of being a different kind of gay chorus. Prior to 1983, the dozen or so gay-identified choruses looked and sounded like non-gayidentified choruses. That all changed on April 9, 1983 when CGMC burst onto the stage for the first time, dressed in black sequined vests with peach rhumba sleeves and did flamboyant numbers such as “The Lady In The Tutti Fruitti Hat”, complete with oversized bananas. You might have seen this number reprised over the years, as recently as 2011 in the Divas show. Appearing the following September at our first national gay choral festival at Lincoln Center in New York (Come Out! And Sing Together – or C.O.A.S.T.), CGMC opened the show as the newest chorus – a tradition that continues to this day at our quadrennial GALA festivals. Our choice of music, costuming and showmanship stopped the show, and now, 30 years later, when you think of the now-hundreds of gayidentified choruses in total, what we pioneered in 1983 is generally part of everyone else’s repertoire. The best is yet to come Traditionally, turning thirty is a time for deep reflection and assessment. CGMC is no different. In the last year CGMC laid the foundation for future growth and stability with the hiring of a new full-time Executive Director. Recently, we expanded into new venues throughout Chicagoland, and will re-engage in a meaningful way with our incredible alumni at a reunion weekend during PrideFest. Next season will see a further expansion, in terms of audience and venue, as well as repertoire. I hope you, our audience family, will join us for what should be another fun and adventurous thirty years.

ABOUT THE CHORUS With more than 150 singing members backed by a small army of volunteers, the CGMC family covers a diverse cross-section of the Chicago metropolitan area. Under the visionary guidance and inspired direction of Artistic Director, Patrick Sinozich, CGMC delivers a distinctive brand of entertainment that keeps our audience coming back again and again. Our members log thousands of hours annually to accomplish an ambitious schedule of performances, fund-raisers and charitable appearances. We Entertain CGMC delivers a unique entertainment experience found nowhere else in the city. We produce professional-quality shows that combine the best elements of musical theater, cabaret and traditional choral performance. But only CGMC can add that special “twist of gaiety” that can make each show fun, moving and memorable. We Inspire Whether we’re representing the community while singing the national anthem at Wrigley Field or we’re providing rarely-seen GLBT-friendly entertainment in smaller cities downstate, CGMC serves as ambassadors and provides a positive image to countless thousands every year. We Motivate Sometimes the message to take action can be delivered more effectively through song than through speech. That’s why CGMC has been heard regularly in the dome of the state Capitol (supporting GLBT rights and domestic partner benefits) and at major fundraising events throughout the city (often supporting AIDS-related organizations). We Comfort CGMC is not only an integral part of the community, but we are a family. When asked to help, CGMC heeds the call. We’ve sung at the Auditorium Theater honoring the victims of Sept. 11. We sing at smaller memorial services honoring local community leaders... and sometimes our own members. We’re humbled to realize that CGMC’s presence can bring comfort and healing to those around us. For more information, to join our mailing list or to find out how you can support the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus, visit cgmc.org. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. CGMC is supported in part by a City Arts 2 grant from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

CGMC is a proud member of GALA Choruses, the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses, an international organization. CGMC is a proud member of the League of Chicago Theatres

Margaret Nelson, Lighting Designer Margaret L. Nelson, USA 829, has received two Ruth Page Dance Achievement Awards for lighting design and stage management in the dance community and a Joseph Jefferson Citation for lighting design at the Organic Theatre. More than that, she has been the lighting designer and occasional stage manager for CGMC for many years. Margaret’s current projects include acting as production stage manager and lighting designer for Goat Island Performance Project’s national and international tours. More projects include working with assorted Chicago dance companies as they create works for Ravinia, the Athenaeum, the Dance Center of Columbia College and a Park District swimming pool; the 2012 Dance Chicago, 2012 Dance For Life and Chicago Human Rhythm Project; and lighting Dance Africa at the Auditorium Theater for WTTW. Theater projects have included lighting and road managing the national tours of Big River, Pump Boys and Dinettes and This Is America. Ron Wirth, Sound Designer Ron Wirth is thrilled and honored to be a part of CGMC’s 30th Anniversary. Since 1996 he has proudly supported their efforts to entertain, inspire, motivate, and comfort. He has watched (and listened) as the chorus grew in spirit, size and depth, and fondly recalls his favorite show: CGMC’s version of “The Ten Commandments”. Ron graduated with a B.A. in Music Education from Governors State University after coming of years during the Viet Nam era. He has toured the US, Brazil, and Western Europe with several jazz and rock bands, and taught private trumpet lessons. The many roads traveled led to another career as an audio engineer, with continued travel to Europe, Mexico, the Baltics, and New Delhi, where he often worked the corporate side as well as the entertainment industry (Jay Leno, Bill Cosby, former president George Bush, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, Ford Motor Co., WTTW Soundstage, and Microsoft to mention a few). Congratulations to CGMC and this incredible milestone!

Derek Van Tassel, Production Assistant Derek is thrilled to be a part of the CGMC experience and All You Need Is Love, having been a Beatles fan since birth. Derek began working with CGMC last year with That 80’s Show and has been the resident stage manager ever since. He has an extensive background of board governance and senior staff operational management experience - specifically with volunteerdriven not-for-profits in transition. Most recently he was the Director of Volunteer Resources and Operational Training with the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust and the founding Board Vice President of the Oak Park-River Forest Food Pantry. He has also served as President of Southport Neighbors Association, a board member of the Lake View Citizens’ Council, and both the Lakeview and Lincoln Square Chambers of Commerce, and early work with the Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. In his spare time, Kent worked on the 2009 HBO film Grey Gardens starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, serving as the Research Consultant to writer-director Michael Sucsy. Not getting enough super gay in his life, Kent is nearing completion of his upcoming biography of gay icon Little Edie entitled “Staunch Character: Edith Bouvier Beale, Jr. of Grey Gardens.”

LARRY E. BURKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND In addition to their many talents and their endless enthusiasm, Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus members are also required to contribute financially to the success of the organization – through annual dues and miscellaneous costs associated with weekend rehearsal retreats and traveling performances. Fortunately, CGMC members who are not able to meet these financial obligations can earn scholarships through the memorial fund left by Larry Burke, a longtime member and dear friend of the chorus who died in February 2005. Through Larry’s generosity, every CGMC member has the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits and experiences the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus has to offer.
