L E T T E R F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T A N D A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R di·va/ˈdēvə/Noun A diva. A diva is a celebrated female singer. The term is used to describe a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera, and, by extension, in theatre, cinema and popular music. Dear Friends, Tonight our stage will feature over 130 ‘divas’ as they pay tribute to some of the music world’s biggest, brightest, and bitchiest female superstars of the past and present. You will hear songs that will make you smile, laugh, and maybe even cry. While Divas! is the last of our series of concerts for the season, rest assured it’s not the last you’ll be seeing and hearing CGMC for the Spring and Summer. Our calendar is full of community-based performances including Milwaukee Pride Fest, the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MCA) 15th Anniversary Celebration, and Macy’s on State Street to name only a few. We are most excited to be traveling to Bloomington/Normal, IL on June 18th for a concert benefitting the Advocacy Council for Human Rights (ACHR), which is dedicated to the implementation of full civil rights protections for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people. Founded as a non-profit group in 1995, ACHR is an active service organization that works for GLBT-friendly legislation, conducts outreach programs, and fosters communication within and outside of the GLBT community. Concerts and community outreach opportunities come at a cost for CGMC and its members with the high expense of transportation, time off work, and outlay of extra rehearsals. But with your continued financial support, our members will be up to the challenges ahead of them. Tonight we ask that you considering making a small donation of $20 to help us cover transportation and associated expenses for our members as they continue to bring joy and music to audiences within and outside of our fair city. Thank you for being a part of our 2010-11 season. We look forward to seeing your faces in the multiple crowds we will be singing to over the next few months! Warm Regards,

Quenten P. Schumacher II President Board of Directors

ABOUT THE CHORUS With more than 150 singing members backed by a small army of volunteers, the CGMC family covers a diverse cross-section of the Chicago metropolitan area. Under the visionary guidance and inspired direction of Artistic Director, Patrick Sinozich, CGMC delivers a distinctive brand of entertainment that keeps our audience coming back again and again. Our members log thousands of hours annually to accomplish an ambitious schedule of performances, fund-raisers and charitable appearances. We Entertain CGMC delivers a unique entertainment experience found nowhere else in the city. We produce professional-quality shows that combine the best elements of musical theater, cabaret and traditional choral performance. But only CGMC can add that special “twist of gaiety” that can make each show fun, moving and memorable. We Inspire Whether we’re representing the community while singing the national anthem at Wrigley Field or we’re providing rarely-seen GLBT-friendly entertainment in smaller cities downstate, CGMC serves as ambassadors and provides a positive image to countless thousands every year. We Motivate Sometimes the message to take action can be delivered more effectively through song than through speech. That’s why CGMC has been heard regularly in the dome of the state Capitol (supporting GLBT rights and domestic partner benefits) and at major fundraising events throughout the city (often supporting AIDSrelated organizations). We Comfort CGMC is not only an integral part of the community, but we are a family. When asked to help, CGMC heeds the call. We’ve sung at at the Auditorium Theater honoring the victims of Sept. 11. We sing at smaller memorial services honoring local community leaders... and sometimes our own members. We’re humbled to realize that CGMC’s presence can bring comfort and healing to those around us. BIOGR APHIES Patrick Sinozich, Artistic Director The 2010-2011 season marks the continuation of Patrick’s 14th year as Artistic Director of the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus. Patrick holds degrees in music from the University of Cincinnati College–Conservatory of Music and from Northwestern University. He also studied music, psychology and theology at Wayne State University, the University of Detroit Mercy and at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. In addition to CGMC, Patrick serves as the Music Director of Chicago a cappella, the Assistant Music Director at St. Clement’s Catholic Church, and is on the musical staff of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He operates a private vocal coaching studio and appears regularly in vocal and chamber music recitals throughout the United States. An accomplished composer and arranger, Patrick writes and arranges much of the material used in CGMC productions. His arrangements have been sung by choruses across the country including New York, Washington DC, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Denver, Cleveland, Portland and Phoenix. Patrick has produced four CDs for Chicago a cappella and three for the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus. James Morehead, Accompanist/ Rehearsal Pianist James Morehead is excited for his second season with CGMC. He has recently music directed and/or played Jerry Springer - The Opera (Jeff Award - Best Show), bare (Jeff nominee Music Direction), Trouble in Tahiti, The Rainbow Connection, Copacabana, The Mikado, The Impresario, Barber of Seville, The Old Maid and the Thief, Amelia Goes to the Ball, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Sondheim in the Park, The Wandering Scholar, The Bear, Reagan’s Children, Something Schwartz, The Way We War, and The Tony Goes To. James is also the organist/choir director at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church in Burr 8 Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus

Ridge, IL and the music director for Vox3 (www.vox3.org). He works at Roosvelt University as an accompanist, vocal coach and music director, having also taught classes classes in music history, music theory and German diction. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, James received his BM from Duquesne University and his MM from Chicago College of Performing Arts. James has also appeared as a featured cabaret pianist at Gentry, Spin, Davenport’s, the 410 Club and the Casino. Janneke Waal-Fowers, Choreographer After her parents sent her to ballet class at four years old to help her get rid of her flat feet, Janneke eventually earned a bachelors degree in Dance Education. She worked as a dance teacher and choreographer for theatre, television and fashion shows both in her native country of the Netherlands and in Bozeman, MT where she also was a founding member of Montana Theatre Works, a community theatre company. After receiving her masters degree in Art & Culture from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, she moved to Chicago with her husband nine years ago and changed careers to become the Heritage Interpreter at Mayslake Peabody Estate. She would like to thank CGMC for giving her the opportunity te re-visit her first love, choreography, despite her flat feet. Margaret Nelson, Lighting Designer Margaret L. Nelson, USA 829, has received two Ruth Page Dance Achievement Awards for lighting design and stage management in the dance community and a Joseph Jefferson Citation for lighting design at the Organic Theatre. More than that, she has been the lighting designer and occasional stage manager for CGMC for many years. Margaret’s current projects include acting as production stage manager and lighting designer for Goat Island Performance Project’s national

B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) and international tours. More projects include working with assorted Chicago dance companies as they create works for Ravinia, the Athenaeum, the Dance Center of Columbia College and a Park District swimming pool; the 2005 Dance Chicago, 2005 Dance For Life and Chicago Human Rhythm Project; and lighting Dance Africa at the Auditorium Theater for WTTW. Theater projects have included lighting and road managing the national tours of Big River, Pump Boys and Dinettes and This Is America. Ron Wirth, Sound Designer Ron Wirth was raised a sharecroppers son on a small farm in the midwest, where he ate fresh veggies from the garden and was forced to drive a stick shift (on a tractor) at age 8. His grade school band director needed trumpet players and Ron’s parents dutifully volunteered their firstborn. In the 7th grade he was diagnosed with a serious disorder and has been wearing glasses ever since. At the age of 16 he had to pay his father 34 cents a gallon for the gasoline that would take him to the city for hooliganism, trumpet lessons, concerts and culture shock, that would change his life forever. Now he just does audio, and still drives a stick. Virginia Broersma, Artistic Administrator Virginia is CGMC’s artistic administrator, joining the chorus in September 2008 after moving to Chicago from sunny San Diego. Virginia has a degree in painting and (like most artists out of school), had to get a “day job”. Virginia was lucky enough to be able to join the staff of CGMC and get involved in the Chicago arts scene. Music has always been a part of her life as she grew up in a very musical family. She plays trombone, piano and fiddle and has been involved in many bands and community orchestras, and yes, she was in marching band! As the Artistic Administrator for CGMC, Virginia does

everything from passing out music to putting lipstick on drag queens and enjoys every minute of it! Arnie Cuarenta, General Manager When Arnie joined the chorus as a singer in 2001, he immediately knew that this group was going to become a permanent fixture in his life. In the four years that followed, he performed in every show, joined the board of directors, and chaired the membership committee. Wanting to leave the corporate world, Arnie said goodbye to Chicago in 2005 to teach English overseas. The most difficult part of that decision was saying goodbye to all the friends he’d made in the chorus – his chosen family. During one of the many farewell celebrations, Arnie met his partner Steve and his plans for teaching English got derailed. He returned to Chicago a month and a half after leaving, re-joined the chorus, but chose not to go back to his old corporate job. When the position of general manager of the chorus opened up, Arnie jumped at the opportunity. Five years in the position now, Arnie not only helps with the day-to-day operations of the chorus, but he’s also the chorus stage mom that makes sure that everyone turns off their mobile phones and smiles while they’re performing.

THE L ARRY E. BURKE MEMORIAL SCHOL ARSHIP FUND In addition to their many talents and their endless enthusiasm, Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus members are also required to contribute financially to the success of the organization – through annual dues and miscellaneous costs associated with weekend rehearsal retreats and traveling performances. Fortunately, CGMC members who are not able to meet these financial obligations can earn scholarships through the memorial fund left by Larry Burke, a longtime member and dear friend of the chorus who died in February 2005. Through Larry’s generosity, every CGMC member has the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits and experiences the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus has to offer.
