D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S It’s seems the hottest trend in doing Shakespeare right now is to see how few actors can manage to play all of the parts! When our play selection committee was contemplating a “pared down” Shakespeare for the season, The Comedy of Errors seemed the perfect vehicle to apply the trend here at Marquette, and the wheels began turning for the production you will see tonight. Though a smaller cast is possible, I opted for an ensemble of 10 (5 men/5 women) in order to provide more casting opportunities for the students. I knew we had actors who could handle the challenge of playing multiple roles, and specifically the demands of only one actor playing both of the Antipholus twins and another, the Dromios. In creating the “world” of our production I wanted to update it at least as far as the 20th century for maximum audience accessibility. Finding our modern Ephesus equivalent was the driving force in our design choices. It’s a city where East meets West, ancient meets modern, and commerce flourishes. A city where the women are “hot” and put you under their spell, and where there is no limit to the strange and mystifying things that can occur. Our set designer has created a deceptively simple combination of colorful multi-use drops and cubes to capture this imaginary contemporary Ephesus for us. However, it was the costumes that were the major force in deciding which decade in which to set the play. Maybe it’s the popularity of Mad Men, but the 1960’s jumped out as a time that could fulfill all of the above. The looks you will see are also an hom2 Marquette University
D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S ( c o n t .) age to those 1960’s Mediterranean film sirens Melina Mercouri and Sophia Loren, as well as the iconic Marcello Mastroianni. To round out our design vision, the choices in lighting and sound became crucial in fleshing out the unique environment of this production. The Comedy of Errors is probably Shakespeare’s most fascinating combination of tragic and comedic elements. The bookends of the play are the sad events surrounding the arrest of Egeon, a Syracusian merchant who has traveled to Ephesus in search of his son Antipholus, who left home to find his long lost twin. However, the majority of the play revolves around the “errors” and comedy that ensue for that same Antipholus, and his servant Dromio (also in search of his twin) on their simultaneous arrival in Ephesus. In true Shakespearean fashion, although strangers give them gifts and women throw themselves at them, they never quite put it together that perhaps the long-lost twin brothers they seek might actually live in Ephesus and are the source of the confusion! These sections are some of the broadest comedy to be found in Shakespeare. To add to the fun, we decided to add a few “errors” of our own that result from the logistics of our 10 actors tackling their 24 roles. See if you can spot them….. Enjoy your trip to Ephesus! BIOGR APHIES Alexandra Bonesho (Adriana) Alexandra is a senior Theatre Arts major. Recent Marquette Credits: Molly, Holy Days; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Romaine Patterson/Others, The Laramie Project. Local credits: Alais in the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s Lion in Winter along with Hair and The Drowsy Chaperone at Sunset Playhouse. Thank you Maureen for your passion and encouragement, the cast, crew, faculty, friends, and finally my parents for their love and making it possible for me to attend Marquette! Tim Braun (Antipholus of Ephesus, Antipholus of Syracuse) Tim is senior double majoring in Theatre Arts and Public Relations. This is Tim’s 11th and final show on the Helfaer mainstage. He was last seen in Little Shop of Horrors (Seymour), Holy Days (Will), The Beaux’ Stratagem (Aimwell), and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Chip). but certainly not least, his family for their never-ending support and love. Enjoy the show! Ian Burr (Angelo, Merchant 1, Pinch’s Assistant, Sailor, Tailor) Ian is junior at Marquette University. His passions involve acting (mainly for film), voice acting, any art form, and fitness. He also likes to tell stories through plays, freestyle, and comics. Ian’s ambition is to become a voice actor or film actor for movies, games, animation, anime, and cartoons. He would also love to be a director. “Do your best and forget the rest.” - Tony Horton. Kyle Conner (Dr. Pinch, Egeon, Waiter) Kyle is ecstatic to be a part of Comedy of Errors for his first Marquette production. A freshman Theatre Arts major and Milwaukee native, Kyle has grown up in Wauwatosa and has been involved in theaters around the area since he was little. Some of his favorite roles include Estaban in U:BUG:ME, Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Paul in Carnival. Samantha Martinson (Luciana) Samantha is a senior at Marquette, double majoring in English and Education. stage! She has previously performed in the MUPS plays The Real Queen of Hearts Ain’t That Pretty and Boy Gets Girl, as well as performed in several student-directed scenes. Samantha is a proud member (of four years) and current Co-President of the Studio 013 Refugees, Marquette’s only improvisation ensemble on campus. She would like to thank her parents and sister, Jessica, for their constant support and love. She would also like to thank her friends for providing laughter and joy in her life. He is a 2015 undergrad student with a Theatre Arts major and hopeful double minor in Dance and Film. You may have spotted Armando as Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors at the beginning of this season, as well as Dancing Through the Decades of Musicals as an ensemble dancer. SCENIC DESIGN CONCEPT Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare is a comedy about long lost twin brothers and the mishaps that they get themselves or each other into. It is a very silly show that lives in a world of endless errors and mistakes. Through working with the director and the other designers, I developed two main aspects to my design; fabric drops and cubes. Maureen has set the play in the 60s in “Ephesus” Turkey. We wanted to create a sense of simplicity while providing richness to the set. The main concept that I wanted to convey with the set is that it mirrors itself, which reflects the characters and actions in the play. The way I designed the drops and cubes is that they are identical or similar to drops and cubes on each sides of the set so they mirror the other side. The set consists of all movable pieces. There are nine cubes that when flipped or moved different ways become different set pieces for the various different scenes. Along with the cubes there are seven drops that create the different settings throughout the play. I decided to design the set with a lot of color in order to convey that nonrealistic sense and playfulness of the show. With the extension I played with the idea of blockiness of the show by creating step units that are the same straight edge idea as the cubes used throughout the play. Thanks again to Maureen Kilmurry and Stephen Hudson-Mairet for working with me on my first scenic design at Marquette. I hope you enjoy this delightful comedy.
COSTUME DESIGN CONCEPT When I approach a design for Shakespeare, it is usually the thrill of where the show is going to land in the sense of what time period. I was thrilled when my director, Maureen discussed the idea of the sixties. When you do the sixties, there are many different avenues you could go, from the feel of the Beatles, the Camelot of the Kennedy’s, the Space Age Fashion, the Granny Look or even the hippy Flower Child look. With conversation with the director, we decided on the High Fashion of Italy. The enjoyment of this time period was looking at many images and films starring Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren. The period reflects such a clean sharp line of silhouette. There has also been a big revival of the time period with the influence of Mad Men and Pan Am to the fashion of today. Many department stores have their retro 60’s dresses in stock. The women have such a distinct look adding the perfect hairstyle, makeup, gloves and hat. With this production, it can be a challenge to take a Shakespeare play with many roles and have 10 actors performs all the characters. I didn’t want to their characters too far out of their realms. So many times characters would add accessories to create the new character. The Turkish influence adds the feel of foreign environment, especially with all the intense colors. To best reflect the time period and richness of the characters, I chose to use all the women’s costumes in silk dupoini and in solid colors. William Shakespeare gave us wonderful characters to have fun with the comic identity of twin brothers and twin servants. We decided to use small differences with the characters with the use of glasses and facial hair to help the change. And what a great surprise you will have at the end when their twins appear. Maureen Kilmurry (Director) A graduate of Marquette University, Ms. Kilmurry received her MFA from Southern Methodist University’s Professional Actor Training Program. She has acted in professional regional theatre companies in Seattle, Dallas, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival. A member of Actors Equity Association, she also lived in New York City for several years where she appeared both “Off”, & “Off-Off” Broadway. With other SMU graduates in New York she helped found, and later ran, an actors’ cooperative whose goals were the continuing education of the professional actor through workshops, independent projects and showcases of new plays. Since returning to her native Milwaukee, she has turned her focus to Rory Higgins (Sound Designer) directing and teaching. She is very active in the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, where she is a Fellow of the Institute. Deb is a member of Actors Equity Association. Chester Loeffler-Bell (Technical Director) Chester has served as lighting designer, technical director, and scene shop supervisor since joining the department in the fall of 2001. Professor Loeffler-Bell manages the scene shop, supervises and advises student lighting designers. Chester has been an active professional lighting designer for the past 20 years, having designed for In Tandem Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Theatre X, Cape Fear Shakespeare Festival, and Carroll College. His recent artistic work includes the lighting design for Little Shop of Horrors and The Lion in Winter for Marquette University, Girl in the Frame for In Tandem Theatre, Poor Tom for Marquette University in collaboration with the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Ireland, and McGuire at Hofstra University. Chester lives in Mukwonago with his wife Susan and sons Harry, Sam, and Joe.
Connie Petersen (Costume Designer/ Costume Shop Manager) Connie is thrilled after 10 years at MU to finally design a show for Maureen. Thanks for a great journey! She received her B.S. degree in theatre from Northwest Missouri State University and M.F.A. degree in Costume and Scenic Design from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. She has worked professionally for Central City Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Denver Center Theatre Company, and Playmakers Repertory Company at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Her recent designs at Marquette include Laramie Project, A Year with Frog and Toad, Putnam County Spelling Bee, Nickel and Dimed, Heidi Chronicles, Tartuffe, J.B., Bye, Bye Birdie and Fifth of July.
