F R O M T H E E X E C U T I V E D I R E C TO R Danceworks is moving up! By the time you read this letter we will be well underway on our expansion to the second floor. I don’t know if you have noticed, but these studios were quite efficiently built out to maximize the space for movement. This is great! It’s not that you need much else—but who knew that we would convert one of the studios into an adaptable, dependable 85-seat black box theatre space that could do with a bit more wing space (have you noticed how long dancers stand patiently waiting for their stage right entrances with no room to move?), and who knew that the staff would grow from one office manager to a full group of 14? It makes for close working relationships on many levels! We will add a staircase, move our offices upstairs—and one of those people who will finally get some decent space to work is our artistic director, Dani Kuepper! The buildout will also provide a third flexible dance/art studio space to house our many multiarts activities—free of file cabinets, refrigerator, microwave and copy machine—along with additional children’s classes, yoga, Pilates and dance fitness! We’re excited. In spite of the recession we are going strong—expanding our programs and staff along with the space. This is because of you—the reason we are here and the reason we do what we do. We thank you for being a part of Danceworks. Let me also take this opportunity to welcome our newest board members: Debbie Gonzalez, Frank Krejci, Gary “Skip” Poliner, and Elaine Sweet. We are thrilled to have such stellar individuals and dance enthusiasts join us in our mission to bring joy, health and creativity to our community. So here we are with a new season and great new things in store for you. We hope that you enjoy this evening of dance and find it truly compelling. We are also optimistic that you will come back and take a class yourself. We really do attempt to have something for everyone. Give it a try and let us know what you think. Now sit back and enjoy! Thank you for being here. Sincerely, Deborah Farris Executive Director, Danceworks, Inc.
F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R In the summer of 2009, I met our guest choreographer, Amii LeGendre, a wildly talented and compelling graduate student in the Dance Department at UW-Milwaukee. I was immediately riveted when she shared that she teaches Dance Improvisation and Modern Technique to men—in prisons in New York. I have been a dance instructor for many years now, and I know how hard it can be to teach an unwilling teenager or a rowdy room of sixth graders. I’ve always taken pride in my ability to adapt and persevere in a variety of tough teaching situations. But prison! I tried to picture myself as the instructor in that scenario—and all I could imagine is that I’d be nervously stammering and making a fool of myself. I was drawn to learn more about this woman, who casually talked about how the men are mostly quite respectful and willing participants. She was quick to graciously shift the focus of 2 Danceworks
F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R ( c o n t .) the discussion to the many intrinsic rewards she’s taken from the experience. Still, as I listened, questions about the process of teaching in a male prison swarmed my head. “What kind of woman is able to command that kind of respect?” Questions like this, and others, were answered as I rehearsed with Amii over the summer and got to know more about her artistry and philosophy. My conclusions are something like this: Amii wants to create work that will find people who don’t necessarily search out dance. She wants it to matter to all kinds of people. Although her intelligence is always apparent, she never talks down to or patronizes others. She meets people in the middle, on their own footing. Amii is interested in creating dances that are simultaneously human and virtuosic—dances that are honest and capable of connecting human beings. After learning these things about Amii—combined with the fact that she’s one of the most dynamic and physically capable dancers I’ve ever seen—I came to the conclusion that she had to be one of Danceworks Performance Company’s guest choreographers for the 10-11 season. As an individual, Amii encompasses the mission statement of Danceworks Inc.: “ To promote the joy, health and creativity of the community…” These are all lofty goals that can only be fully accomplished by the truest of human beings, and Amii is one of them. Amii, thank you—for your honesty, integrity and willingness to join us for Lying. Sincerely, Dani Kuepper Artistic Director, Danceworks Performance Company every kind of dance | every kind of dancer
