F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R As DPC’s artistic director, it has been my primary goal for the last few seasons to showcase the choreographic work of the up and coming DPC choreographers, as well as those who are more seasoned. Kelly Anderson has been a regular player in the choreographic playground for quite some time now. One of the things that brings her to the forefront time and time again is her vision. She gets an idea, she does her research, and from the moment she proposes the work, she can see the finished product in her mind. Many choreographers begin with movement and music, and leave the other elements for later consideration. Kelly envisions the work in its entirety—from cohesive costume and make-up design to distinctive set design and spectacular lighting, no detail is left unimagined. And Kelly is a master at enlisting talented designers to support her vision. This is a woman who knows what she wants, and knows how to get it. When Kelly says she is going to do something, have no doubts that it will be accomplished. Her strengths are a reminder that the work of an artist of any kind is equal parts creativity and hard work. Creative vision goes nowhere without the tenacity and consistency it takes to make it tangible. Thank you, Kelly! Sincerely, Dani Kuepper Artistic Director, Danceworks Performance Company

ARTIST NOTES Variety. My obsession began in 2002 at a local music venue, The Cactus Club; my friends and I had organized our very first “Variety Show.” Over the past eight years, I have been in a Dynasty boxing match in a baby pool, have slow danced with a Patrick Swayzemasked angel while dripping in clay, recited lyrics from Ludicrous as a beatnik poet in black, and chanted cheers about pinecones and rhinoplasty (to name a few). Variety...for the sake of entertainment. This concert is a celebration of the unique acts that had lived on the vaudeville stage, and it is a tribute to the many characters that inspired variety performers of the future. Though vaudeville historically “ended” in the 1930s, the tradition of variety entertainment continues to live on. Variety is what made each vaudevillian performer so extraordinary. The dancers of DPC are as equally eclectic and fascinating; each company member has a unique voice and has greatly inspired the work you will see here. You will witness a collaboration of talent, and without their contributions, the show would not be complete. I would like to extend a special thank you to Kara Mulrooney, Ashley Coffey and Dani Groom for costuming; Sara Caron for transforming our studio theatre through a magnificent set; Dani Kuepper for taking on this wild and crazy project; my family and friends for their continual support; Jan Kellogg for being Jan; Dan Bishop for his photographic vision; and the talented dancers of DPC. I would also like to thank Viv...it was an honor to hear your stories of your life in vaudeville. Last, but certainly not least, Ed Burgess...it is every girl’s dream to perform a piece to Judy Garland. Enjoy the show, and I promise I won’t walk out in a Richard Simmons costume, lip-synching Whitney Houston’s “You Give Good Love.” Kelly Anderson
