D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E I am a fan of Lynn Nottage. Her plays are a great vehicle for learning about the world around us and our unique history as a country. Complex situations together with richly woven language challenge directors, dramaturgs, designers, and actors to stretch their artistic imaginations and skills. It is the mark of great playwrights when a complex life can be described in fluid and powerful terms. This play has intersecting lives and boundaries. It is the idea of intersecting lives and boundaries that I have used as our theme for exploring Ms. Nottage’s work. We hope you enjoy and come to love this work as much as we have loved working on it. - Phyllis E. Griffin D R A M AT U R G Y N O T E Me and Esther Mills I’ve spent the last six months digging through documents and recordings of America’s past in search of Lynn Nottage’s characters from Intimate Apparel. As I collected information, I began connecting their lives to mine. While researching Esther’s journey to New York from North Carolina, I first pictured my great-great-great grandfather making the journey from Valdosta, Georgia. I then reflected on my own journey from Orlando, Florida, to Chicago. Esther and my ancestors saw a promising future in New York City. What exactly do I see in Chicago now? This answer may sound like a cliché, but life in Chicago means freedom. Three years ago nobody in Chicago knew me; the city offered me a chance to become a new woman—one who is smart, independent, and charming. I may not have achieved any of those qualities, but I always have the chance to start anew here. When Esther left North Carolina, she was the same age as I when I left Orlando and wanted that same beginning. Every now and then I like to indulge the fantasy that Esther Mills is a part of my history—maybe even a part of my family. Through Intimate Apparel Lynn Nottage presents a woman whose journey is universal. I, like Esther, started my life in one place and over time became dissatisfied. The neighborhood watch associations, mini-mansions, and artificial suburban life repulsed me. I didn’t live in a neighborhood with an ornamental English title like Windermere or Westminster Abbey, so the kids I went to grade school with treated me as an outsider. I flew to Chicago hoping the city would love me in the same way I loved it. I traveled with Esther through books and articles on the reconstruction and turn of the century. As I continued to read, I began noticing the differences between our journeys. The Federal Government never enforced laws restricting me to one county. I’ve never been bound to a chain gang, nor have I witnessed the public execution of someone close to me. So, even though our stories are similar, I found comparing the woes of suburban life to the torment inflicted on Blacks by post-Civil War society unsettling. I felt guilty. I should be grateful that I was allowed to attend the high-ranking schools in the suburbs. In the 1880s my father would have hanged from a tree for impregnating my mother, a White woman. I looked to Lynn Nottage to comfort my conscience. Intimate Apparel reassured me that no matter where I am in history, pain is pain, and love is love. History tells me a story of cruelty and unbearable suffering. A pattern of war, enslavement, and torture emerges from the pages of history books. The lives of fugitive slaves seem distant, and the stories of Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas read as legends. And yet I feel that the anger I feel is their anger. Esther’s yearning for love and companionship reflects my own feelings of longing. History can’t limit the amount I’m allowed to feel. Some theatregoers may view Intimate Apparel as a period piece, but the ways in which the characters feel and connect to one another leap outside of their historical context. --Tiffany Wilson, 3rd year BFA Dramaturgy/Criticism DePaul University 3
BIOGR APHIES KRENEE ALISHA (Esther), 4th year BFA/ Acting. Krenee was born and raised in Baltimore city, where she attended Baltimore School for the Arts. She recently appeared in The Theatre School production of Cabaret, directed by Barry Brunetti. DAN COBBLER (George), 2nd year MFA/ Acting. Dan is a New Jersey native, though he has called Indiana home for ten years. He graduated as a Christ College Scholar with a BA in Drama and Humanities from Valparaiso University. Most recently, Dan was seen with his MFA class in a production of Harold Pinter’s Celebration, directed by Dado. CELESTE M. COOPER (Mrs. Dickson), 3rd MFA/Acting. Celeste received her BA in Theatre from Tennessee State University, where she was the recipient of the Most Multi-Talented Award and Best Actress Award from The Thomas Edward Poag Players’ Guild in 2009. Some of her credits include The American In Me as Jeannie, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) as Adam, The Bluest Eye as Pecola, Romeo and Juliet as Juliet, The Matchmaker as Mrs. Levi. Her Theatre School credits include Blood Pudding as Shango, Much Ado About Nothing as Ursula/Sexton, and Medea as a chorus member. ALEXANDER KOCH (Mr. Marks), 4th year BFA/Acting. Alexander is from Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He studied film at Western Michigan University before transferring to The Theatre School, and performed as Claude in Hair, Lee Harvey Oswald in Assassins, and Ralph in Reefer Madness at the Whole Art Theatre. He was also a member of the improv comedy group Crawlspace Eviction. Some of his Theatre School credits include Randy/ Jimmy in Almost, Maine, Jack/Ernest in The Importance of Being Earnest, Justus in Normal, and Victor in Cabaret. He recently starred in a short film entitled The Ghosts, which premiered at the Brooklyn International Film Festival. ANNIE PRICHARD (Mrs. Van Buren), 3rd year MFA/Acting. Annie received her BA from San Diego State University. Previous Theatre School credits include The American In Me, The Painted Lady, Objects Lie On a Table, and Shipwrecked! KELLY ERIN SLOAN (Mayme), 4th year BFA/ Acting. Kelly is from Southfield, Michigan. Her past Theatre School credits include Story 4 DePaul University

GRIFFIN (Director), Associate Professor of Voice and Speech. Phyllis E. Griffin is a Certified Feldenkrais Practioner® and Certified Lessac Teacher. In addition, she has studied with Richard Armstrong of the Roy Hart Theatre Method, Patsy Rodenburg, Catherine Fitzmaurice, Dudley Knight and Kristin Linklater. She has served as vocal coach for The Goodman Theatre, assisting on Gem Of The Ocean, Drowning Crow, King Hedley II, Blues For An Alabama Sky, and I Am A Man. She has also been the vocal coach for the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, working with Barbara Gaines on Henry IV, Part I&II, Cymbeline, and Othello. She has previously worked for Disney Productions as the vocal coach to prospective actors for The Lion King. She was also dialect coach for Joan Plowright on the feature film Dennis The Menace and has provided vocal instruction to several private business leaders and narrated documentaries for PBS and NPR. She most recently directed for ETA, where the two one-acts became Jeff-Recommended. In addition to her work as a voice and speech professor, Phyllis has directed several plays for The Theatre School including A Raisin In The Sun, Bud, Not Buddy, Einstein Is A Dummy, Two Trains Running, Insurrection: Holding History, Flyin’ West, Stamping, Shouting And Singing Home, Sleep Deprivation Chamber, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, and Curse of the Starving Class. PHIL TIMBERLAKE (Vocal Coach) Professor of Voice and Speech, Performance. Phil is an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework and was the 1996 Annette Kade Fulbright Fellow to France, studying “extended voice” work at the Roy Hart International Arts Centre. He previously taught at Northern Illinois University and Virginia Commonwealth University. He also taught at The Actor’s Gymnasium and The Actors Center in Chicago, and has led “extended voice” workshops with Lookingglass Theatre, Roosevelt University, Purdue University, Barat College, and the Modjeska Youth Theatre. Phil is an ensemble member of Lifeline Theatre where he received a Jeff Citation Nomination for Best Supporting Actor – Musical for his work in Queen Lucia. Other Chicago acting credits include First Folio Shakespeare (The Tempest), Lifeline (The

DANA COFFEY (Assistant Director) 4th year BFA/Theatre Arts. Dana is from Homewood, IL. She is double majoring in Theatre Arts and Peace, Conflict and Justice Studies. Over her tenure at DePaul, she has worked on Workshop 5 and Haroun and the Sea of Stories. She recently returned from studying and conducting theatre for development workshops in Mombasa, Kenya. TIFFANY WILSON (Dramaturg), 3rd year BFA/Dramaturgy/Criticism. Upon graduating from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, FL, Tiffany enrolled at DePaul to study English. After a year, she joined The Theatre School where she majors in Dramaturgy. She has served as dramaturg for such shows as Inky, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Monster Under the Bed. JACK MAGAW (Scenic Designer), Faculty. Jack has designed numerous productions for The Theatre School including The Secret Garden, The Civic and Life is a Dream. Other Chicago and regional theatre design credits include Gee’s Bend (Cincinnati Playhouse), Samuel J&K (Steppenwolf Theatre Co.), Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and Home (Court Theatre), A Life and Eclipsed (Northlight Theatre), A Few Good Men and The Importance of Being Earnest (Peninsula Players Theatre), Mauritius (TheatreSquared), She Loves Me, The Old Settler and Picnic (Writers Theatre), Radio Golf (Pittsburgh Public Theatre), Cabaret, A Flea In Her Ear and Winesburg, Ohio (Kansas City Repertory) and Bug (Redtwist Theatre) which he co-directed and designed with Kimberly Senior. Shane has worked in a variety of technical and design positions around the country including The Second City, Chicago Spotlight, Caffeine Theatre (where he is an artistic associate), Chicago Scenic Studios, University of Northern Colorado, American Repertory Theatre, the Guthrie Theatre, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Surflight Theatre in New Jersey, Little Theatre of the Rockies, and for Vee Corporation at the NBA All-Star Jam Session. He has an M.F.A. in Theatre Technical Production from the Professional Theatre Training Program (P.T.T.P.) at the University of Delaware. Shane is a member of USITT, the Vice-Chair for Programming of the USITT Midwest Regional Section, and an ETCP Certified Rigger-Arena and Theatre. ANDERS WAHL (Assistant Technical Director), 3rd year BFA/Theatre Technology. Anders is from Rochester, NY. Sam was raised in Connecticut and since moving to Chicago has worked with Lookingglass Theatre Company, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Next Theatre, and many others. He serves as Technical Director for the newly formed DePaul Theatre Union. He spent this past summer working on theatrical automation systems for Fisher Technical Services in Las Vegas, Nevada. SCOTT LEIGH NIELSEN (Sound Designer). Scott is a musician and sound designer based in Chicago, Illinois. Scott has designed sound and composed original music for productions including The Master Builder (Yale Repertory Theatre), Waiting For Lefty (UCSD), The Robbers and Hamlet (Yale School of Drama), The People’s Four Seasons and Enter Love (Quest Theatre), Rantoul and Die and RIPPED: The Living Newspaper Project (American Blues Theater) and Be Aggressive (Yale Cabaret). Odradek at HOUSE Theatre, Mistakes Were Made Off-Broadway and at A Red Orchid Theatre, Reverie with Second City at The Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, Lady at Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre OffBroadway, Gas for Less at the Goodman Theatre. In 2004, Dexter was awarded the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Direction Off-Broadway for Tracy Letts’ Bug, as well as a Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Director. In 1995 Dexter co–founded Plasticene, whose critically– acclaimed experimental works have been featured in Chicago, Europe and New York City. With Plasticene, he has directed and collaboratively created over fourteen original works including The Palmer Raids (2003) and From A Fading Light (2010). Since 1996, Dexter has directed and taught with The Second City, developing revues at both Chicago and Detroit. Back in 1990, Dexter founded The Next Lab at The Next Theatre where he directed Bouncers, for which he received a Jefferson Citation and an After Dark Award. He received his undergraduate degree in acting from Northwestern University and his MFA in Performance from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. JOHN CULBERT (Dean). In Chicago, John has designed scenery and/or lighting for the Buckingham Fountain, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Garfield Conservatory, Chicago Park District, Field Museum of Natural History, Goodman Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Lookingglass Theatre, Drury Lane Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Chicago Opera Theatre and more than thirty productions at Court Theatre. At the Court Theatre, he received several Joseph Jefferson nominations and a Jeff Award for The Triumph Of Love and will be designing lighting for Invisible Man and scenery for Angels in America. Other Chicago productions include Regina for the Lyric Opera of Chicago and A Year With Frog And Toad for Chicago Children’s Theatre. John has designed scenery and/or lighting for the Boston Lyric Opera, St. Louis Opera, Baton Rouge Opera, Southern Repertory, Cleveland Orchestra, McCarter Theatre and Bristol Riverside Theatre. NO CELLULAR PHONES, TEXT MESSAGING, RECORDING DEVICES, PHOTOGRAPHY, PAGERS, FOOD AND BEVERAGES Please do not use the above listed items in the theatre. Patrons with electronic pagers or cellular telephones are asked to either turn off their equipment in the theatre or check them with the House Manager prior to curtain. We discourage text messaging during the performance. The light from the screen can bother other patrons. We allow photographs to be taken before and after but never during the performance. You may also check cameras and recording equipment with the House Manager who will secure them until final curtain. As a special favor, we ask that young people do not chew gum. Water fountains are located in the lower lobby and in the lobbies of the mezzanine and balcony. RESTROOMS Restrooms are located in the lower lobby, the mezzanine, and balcony. An accessible restroom is located on the main floor inside of the theatre. LOST AND FOUND If you find an item or have lost an item, please contact the House Manager. You may also call (773) 325-7968 the next day to determine if an item has been found. Chicago Playworks for Families and Young Audiences Chicago Playworks offers a live theatre experience to students, teachers and parents in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is our mission to provide theatre for children that reflects their experiences in a contemporary, multi-ethnic, urban environment. Founded as the Goodman Children’s Theatre in 1925, Chicago Playworks is the city’s oldest continuously operating children’s theatre. It has been the first theatre experience for audiences of Chicago’s young people for more than eight decades and was one of the first major theatres for children in the United States. In 1997 and again in 2003, Chicago Playworks was honored by the Illinois Theatre Association with the Children’s Theatre Division Award, for its outstanding long-term contribution to children’s theatre. In 1980, Chicago Playworks was awarded the prestigious Sara Spencer Award by the Children’s Theatre Association of America (now the American Alliance for Theatre and Education). Chicago Playworks is a vital aspect of the training at The Theatre School at DePaul University. Students gain pre-professional experience in an extended run before a most demanding and appreciative audience. Chicago Playworks presents three unique productions to more than 30,000 young people each season and has entertained more than 1 million schoolchildren and families since 1925. The Theatre School Showcase Contemporary Plays and Classics Presenting diverse and exciting productions, The Theatre School Showcase blends imagination and cultural impact with three plays, and rounds-out the season with a fourth production featuring the graduating MFA in Acting candidates. The Theatre School Showcase offers a unique opportunity to see tomorrow’s industry leaders today, by introducing the raw creativity and dedicated collaborations of artists at the beginning of their careers. Their work is powerful, imaginative, and new. Merle Reskin Theatre DePaul’s Historic Merle Reskin Theatre, built as the Blackstone Theatre in 1910, was designed by Chicago architects Marshall & Fox. The stone façade and mansard roof of the Beaux-Arts style building have been modified only slightly over the years. The interior finish of French walnut and gold was designed by Plamondon & Tetze to give the appearance of a European opera house. Prior to DePaul’s purchase of the theatre in 1988, it had been home to vaudeville, the Federal Theatre Project and the touring productions of the Shubert Organization. The Theatre School brings an audience of more than 35,000 people to the theatre each season.

TSN is an electronic alumni activity newsletter published monthly (except July). Though originally created as a vehicle to communicate alumni activities among alumni, it is now also used for admissions, recruitment, fund raising, advertising and promotion.
