Song of the Seasons This show was premiered in the summer of 2009 at the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua’s summer festival to an energized and delighted audience. Its origins sprang from a January 2009 Blue Canvas Orchestra writing retreat that had as its goal the creation of a show about the Winter season. During the week-long retreat, one of the casts’ many composers arranged the Winter movement from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons as a show opener, and the BCO’s “Fractured Vivaldi” concept became an immediate success. It’s juxtaposition of reverent true to form interpretations of the master work with joyous excursions into other genres, was a perfect fit with the Big Top troupe. The success of this experiment lead the Big Top’s music director Ed Willett to ask, “Why not frame all four seasons in this manner and follow each movement with original songs, theater, and comedy drawn from our shared experiences living out the seasons in this part of the world?” “Song of the Seasons” was on its way.

Puccini's opera "Madama Butterfly" by Teatro Lirico d'Europa. The backdrop is contemporary Japan. The songs, lighting, characters, plot and musical accompaniment intermingle to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. They await to know what will happen to poor Cio-cio-san as she commands the stage and reveals the many emotions of a woman who is torn between truth and lies, reality and fantasy, love and death. “……...The chorus sang sumptuously and the orchestra gave Puccini's score both physical and emotional weight." BOSTON PHOENIX - Jeffrey Gantz - Mar. 2003 Prepare yourself to be moved by this stellar performance. 5
Sotto Voce Quartet
“High Art For Low Brass” best summarizes Sotto Voce’s chamber music group. A novelty group because of their unique instrumentation, what audiences find most unique is how an instrument so large can be played so effortlessly and with flamboyant technique. Sotto Voce continuously strives to be viewed as a viable chamber music ensemble by making first-rate chamber music. The quartet’s self-created repertoire includes original compositions and arrangements of music from all eras (English Madrigals to the music of Frank Zappa). Sotto Voce Tuba Quartet: the hippest thing to happen with tuba repertoire, playing and style for a long time. - BigBrass.com
