F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R , J E N N I F E R U P H O F F G R A Y Welcome to Forward Theater! We are so happy you could join us today for our production of Love Stories – three short plays exploring love and marriage. This collection of plays has special meaning for me -- I directed this progression of one-acts about complicated relationships in an Off- Off-Broadway production when I was just starting out as a director in New York City. The juxtaposition of stories intrigued me then, when I was barely in my twenties. They resonate with me in many deeper, more meaningful ways now that I have spent two decades in love with Peter – first as my boyfriend, then as my husband, and now the father of my three children. The nature of love does indeed change over the years, and I’m sure will continue to grow and evolve each year we are together. As happy as I am to present our final production of the 2011-2012 season, I am even more excited to announce the lineup of plays for our 2012-2013 season! We are celebrating the quest for the American dream with plays that range from the stories of politicians, soldiers, and statesmen aspiring to be president (44 Plays for 44 Presidents); writers struggling for fame and critical success while keeping their integrity intact (Collected Stories); and a woman desperate to escape her downand-out neighborhood and precarious life, balancing just above the poverty line (Good People). In addition, our second monologue festival will truly be “as American as apple pie” – focusing on heartwarming, hilarious, and harrowing stories about food. I hope you’ll join Forward Theater for another incredible season! It will be our first as an official resident company in Overture Center!

F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R ... PAU L A S U O Z Z I A chance meeting followed by the dance of courtship. A marriage beginning and a marriage ending. These are the tales heard in this trio of plays that we’ve entitled Love Stories. Pulling classic stories into a modern context offers the chance to glimpse “what might have been” from the perspective of “what is.” We have the opportunity to see two fine actors arriving for rehearsal with all of life trailing them in the door. Why does one put down the phone, computer, children, and life to spend time in a dark theater enacting parts that aren’t real? What pulls us towards this life and as audience members, what pulls us in? There are so many issues tugging at us, there are so many demands to take care of, is it really necessary to stop and allow time to move at a pace dictated by playwrights who are no longer living? We think it is. We think one must “remember the honeymoon” all throughout the days, months, and years of a marriage and a life. To move forward one needs to look back, if only for a couple of hours. As I write this, I’ve just spent another hour with my husband working through the ridiculously complex schedule that will be our lives while I rehearse these plays. We often remind ourselves that the scheduling talks are a necessary means to an end — that rare moment when we can sit on the couch together and focus one thing — each other.

F R O M T H E B OA R D O F D I R E C TO R S ... K AT H I E N I C H O L S As the president of the FTC board of directors, let me tell you two things: First, I am extremely proud of our current season. Forward’s stages have been filled with virtuoso performances of some of the most evocative, challenging, humorous, and poignant stories you’ve ever seen. The characters in The Farnsworth Invention, A Thousand Words, and Love Stories, and the actors who embodied them, will live in your memory long after the final applause fades. Second, I am thrilled to be finishing my first year as president of Forward’s board of directors. I’ve been on the board for most of Forward’s young life, and I cannot tell you how proud I am of this start-up professional theater company in Madison. We have received nothing but positive reviews for our productions to date (thanks in no small part to our incredibly talented artistic director, Jennifer Uphoff Gray). Our subscriber base has increased by 43% over last year, and 78% of previous subscribers renewed their tickets—figures that are almost unheard of in the performing arts. And I’m even more proud to say we’ve done all of this without having to borrow a cent. We ended each of our previous seasons “in the black,” and we are budgeting carefully to do the same this season. Though it’s sometimes hard to believe, as an organization we are still in our infancy. Our accomplishments are profound, especially considering that we are still putting key pieces of infrastructure in place. It has been a lot of work, but it has been a (successful!) labor of love. Of course, FTC’s amazing work on stage and behind the scenes is only possible because of the commitment of donors and audience members like you. Your support has given us a very strong foundation on which to grow. We look forward to partnering with you — and seeing you at the theater — for many years to come!
The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry® is proud to support the Forward Theater Company. Best wishes for a successful season.

F R O M T H E A DV I S O R Y C O M PA N Y ... J I M B U S K E Forward Theater’s advisory company is made up of theater artists — a body unique to Forward Theater. When we formed the company, we wanted to ensure that the artistic side of the theater would always be in balance with the business side. It’s been three years and we’re still working our way through this new concept, but so far it’s working pretty well. What are some of the things that the advisory company does? We (along with FTC staff ) read dozens of scripts each year to find plays that are both exceptionally written and interesting to our audience. We also greet patrons like you in the lobby at each performance. This way we can talk to the people who attend our plays and get direct feedback. Each fall the AC hosts a public forum where interested community members are invited to share their questions, concerns, and ideas. By maintaining this dialogue, we hope to build a theater that exceeds expectations. As you can see, our focus is making sure that Forward Theater responds to its audience. We have many other responsibilities (some involve making pie for backstage meals, some involve moving furniture to the rehearsal space) but none is more important than making sure we stay in contact with you — our patrons, donors, and sponsors. Your support through our first three seasons has been nothing short of amazing. As we look forward to our fourth season of presenting locally produced, professional theater, be assured that our commitment to you is as strong as your commitment to us!

F R O M T H E D R A M AT U R G ... F R A N K H O N T S Love is the beauty of the soul. Love is blind. Love is the irresistible desire to be desired irresistibly. Love is a temporary madness. Love is the enchanted dawn of every heart. Love is a fire. Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness. Love is the emblem of eternity. Love is a game that two can play and both win. Love is an emotion experienced by the many and enjoyed by the few. Love is the answer. Love is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. Love is a many splendored thing. Love is like quicksilver in the hand. Love is the gross exaggeration of the difference between one person and everybody else. - Writers, artists, and thinkers through the ages Love Stories offers a multi-faceted glimpse into three great writers’ views on love, written roughly around the same time, enduring in their underlying themes. The production focuses on couples in various stages of their relationships—a man and woman engaged in a courtship, two newlyweds on their honeymoon, and a husband and wife whose marriage is coming apart. Their interactions reveal the complex and often disjointed nature of affection, demonstrating that falling in (and out) of love is rarely a straight progression from point A to point B. Taken together, these plays invite us to consider questions like: Is love ever true? How do two people come to love one another? What happens when someone falls out of love? More than a simple romance, these plays examine the journey from “feelings of love” to “the act of marriage.” Ostensibly, marriage is a permanent, legal expression of mutual devotion. Of course, most of us have had relationships that began as love and ended as . . . something less. And if our feelings of love are ephemeral, so too are the institutions that are supposed to uphold the rules of marriage. Legal definitions of marriage—and who gets to marry whom —are specific to time and place, fluid and dynamic across the ages. Societies rely upon rituals and customs to affirm the underlying values of marriage: the honeymoon, the exchange of vows, and even the gifts people are expected to bestow, all signify what matters most in marriage. In the “love stories” of Dorothy Parker, George Bernard Shaw, and Bertolt Brecht, marriage is a tenuous state. Each couple feels anxious about the formalized ritual of marriage, regardless of the stage of their relationships, or their feelings for one another. At the same time, these writers recognize the fleeting nature of their characters’ emotions. Each play takes place in the midst of a journey—on a leisurely cruise, toward a honeymoon destination, and away from a fractured relationship. While it is easy to see the pessimism and impermanence of love in each of these plays, we should take heart in the fact that love never disappears completely. Indeed, love always endures.
