CAST LIST Rosie............................................................................................................................ Katie Callahan Gant............................................................................................................................. Larry Lajewski Will....................................................................................................................................... Tim Braun Molly.................................................................................................................Alexandra Bonesho The action of the play takes place in Rosie and Gant’s kitchen. Will and Molly’s farmhouse is adjacent to Rosie and Gant’s house. The farm is in Western Kansas. The time of the play is Good Friday to Easter Sunday, 1936. The videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S The story of the family in Holy Days is one that is similar to the story of many of our own families affected by the Dustbowl during the Great Depression. And yet, that part of relatively recent American history is not one with which many college students today are familiar. And they should be, we all should be. Author Timothy Egan refers to the Dustbowl crisis as “the worst hard time” in his book of the same name, affecting millions more than Hurricane Katrina, to reference a disaster college students do have a familiarity with today. Millions of people across our nation were affected directly or indirectly by nature’s violent, unrelenting reply to years of drought and mistaken agricultural practices. Thousands and thousands of people in the Great Plains struggled to survive the loss of jobs, loss of their property to foreclosure, poverty, homelessness, separation of loved ones, hunger, sickness and death during the “Dirty Thirties”. There are a number of similarities to the hardships endured by our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents during the 1930’s and the economic and emotional hardships suffered by a great number of people in our country today. This is a story worth telling, a part of our American History well worth re-visiting. Holy Days takes the plight of one family in Dustbowl Kansas, 1936, certainly not the worst off of the families in the Great Depression but far from the best off, and lets us see how bad things often do happen to good, ordinary people. It happened to our relatives, and is happening today to many in our country, perhaps not the result of nature’s wrath, but due to causes beyond repair by an average Joe. I wonder, if you were confronted with the dilemma faced by Rosie or Gant or Will or Molly, what would you do? Would you pull up roots and leave your home? Would you separate your family to try and find work elsewhere? Would the stress and strain cause your family to fall apart? Would the loss of so much be too much to bear? There are no easy answers in times like those, or times like these. I hope this play will bring up thoughts of your own family’s struggles, and encourage discussion about how everyday Americans managed to make it through the tough times back then. And perhaps find hope that our country can manage it once again. Debra Krajec

DESIGN CONCEPT
In 2005, we entered into a remarkable experiment with the design of Everyman. That spring a group of ambitious design students worked together in my Computer Applications for the Theatre class to work as a scenographic team to develop the scenic, lighting, costume and animation design for that production. This past spring, we decided to attempt the process again. This is somewhat unique in an undergraduate setting. As in 2005, the students enrolled in my Computer Applications for the Theatre class were charged with developing the design, and the only requirement is that the design work be developed on the computer. The resulting scenery, costumes, and lighting need not be technological in nature, but the process needed to be technologically driven. What resulted was an exciting experience of student design teams creating great art together. I am most proud that this is a student centered design process. The students in this class researched, devised, revised, and designed the elements of the show you see before you tonight. I served as the facilitator in the class, and I want to thank Debra Krajec, Chester Loeffler-Bell, and Connie Petersen for joining us and working with the students in the class to provide feedback and help guide the discussions in the class. And my sincere thank you to the brave students for going through this experiment with me; Scenic team: Lex Gernon, Carissa Saia, Raquel Garces; Costume Team: Maddy Yee, Andrea Schoening, Adriana Saia; Lighting and Sound Team: Nic Trapani (with Noah Greenia class of 2011, and Christian Whitman studying in England this semester). They are to be commended for their great work.

Stephen lives quite happily in a very old house in Wauwatosa with his wife Heidi, and daughters Emma and Grace.
