KEVIN SCHWARTZ: 20 YEARS AND COUNTING “Exposing young adults to classic theater and giving them a chance to perform it—that’s what we are here for.” -Kevin Schwartz
Kevin Schwartz has been teaching at Pius XI High School in Milwaukee for over 20 years. Before he was a teacher, he was an actor himself, studying and performing in California before moving back to the Midwest. When he arrived back in Brew City, he attended Marquette University where he received his Masters in Fine Arts, and shortly after arrived at Pius XI High School. The theatre program was quite small, and only 70 students out of the school’s 2,000 were enrolled in theatre courses. That greatly changed once Kevin was brought on board-within two years the classes were filling up; he was switched over to full-time, and in seven years the program had to hire another theatre teacher. The theatre program now offers classes in improvisation, directing, technical theater, and five levels of acting classes. All Pius XI students can take a theatre course in an area of their interest and gain confidence in skills such as public speaking as well as a deeper respect for arts literature and history. Through Kevin’s influence, the program has exposed students to a wide variety of experiences and opportunities. Performing at the Pabst Theater before the Wendy Joy Lindsay Theater was built and collaborating with area professionals through workshops and as guest directors are some of the ways the theatre program has benefited the students. Collaborations have included The Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, and working with Milwaukee actress favorite, Angela Iannone. Students do pursue theatre at the next level, and continue to pursue performance post-college. One of the most recent examples is Joel Johnstone, who stars in the Steve Carrell and Jennifer Garner film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Still in connection with Kevin, he is one of the many Pius XI alum to go and succeed both on stage and on screen. The theatre program now boasts three teachers (Peter Reeves and Doug Soder in addition to Kevin Schwartz), and performs a majority of their productions in the beautiful Wendy Joy Lindsay Theater, located in the Father Robert V. Carney Performing Arts Center on campus. This year’s season utilizes a theme of “Love/War/Redemption”, and kicks off with the hilarious musical Nunsense, a touching homage to the School Sisters of St. Francis that founded Pius XI High School 85 years ago. For more information about their season, please visit piuspac.org or footlights.com. Issue #1

ADAM STEFFAN AND WAUWATOSA WEST’S TROJAN PLAYERS “Through theatre classes and high-quality productions, the Trojan Players create exceptional theatre experiences for our students and our audience.” -Adam Steffan
Adam Steffan grew up in Wauwatosa, so he is no stranger to the vibrancy of its community. The community, however, can look forward to increasing its arts and cultural offerings with Adam Steffan now at the helm of Wauwatosa West’s theatre program. Originally planning on studying musical theatre at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Adam fell in love with the art of teaching instead. He transferred to UW-Milwaukee and received his BA in Theatre Education, with K-12 Certification. Adam went on to gain experience in teaching at the prestigious Children’s Theatre of Charlotte in North Carolina, where he served as a Resident Teaching Artist for their School of Theatre Training Program. That all changed in October of 2012. Adam, who had recently moved back to the area, received a phone call from his old middle school computer teacher. Much to his surprise, his old teacher was now the principal at Wauwatosa West High School. Their fall production of CATS was opening in three and a half weeks, and they had no director and wondered if Adam would be interested. Adam started immediately, and almost instantly began shaping the theatre program into something special. Now in his third year, Adam has several productions and accomplishments under his belt. The program boasts a highly organized set shop, costume and prop rooms, and newly painted and cleaned dressing rooms. The curriculum has been updated and revamped. The program now boasts weekly meetings featuring student leaders and officers, and has a growing number of Tommy Awards that the entire school is proud of, from A CHORUS LINE to JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. Most importantly, Adam has kept the students of Wauwatosa West first and foremost in the program. From day one, Adam has kept the students’ thoughts and opinions on his radar, and takes their talents and skills into consideration for every production they produce. Adam strives to find shows that can include as many students as possible, and show off their gifts as well as give them challenges to face over the course of the production. This 2014-2015 season proves to be no different. This fall, the Trojan Players tackle the beloved and fun musical GREASE, and in spring they will be one of the first high schools in the country to perform THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a musical featuring America’s favorite creepy family from the classic television show. For more information about the players, please visit www.trojanplayers.com or footlights.com! 8
