Christine, The Phantom, Raoul & the Company F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R ’ S C H A I R Steven Spielberg in commenting upon Peter Jackson’s film, “King Kong”, said, “Perhaps people should not be allowed to direct their dream project.” Having ardently admired “The Phantom of the Opera” for more than a quarter of a century, it would most certainly have fulfilled the requirements for being my dream project. Rarely, have the elements of suspense, action, romance, magic and passion been so skillfully intertwined into a single entity with one of the most lush musical scores ever to be written for the theatre. Undoubtedly, this combination accounts for the “Phantom of the Opera” being the most successful entertainment piece of all time. No matter from which direction one approaches the work, there is a haunting, captivating and majestic fulfillment in watching it unfold on the stage. So it was with both great caution and reckless abandon that I sought the license for the production. Was it possible that I would actually be directing the project which had been for so long a dream or should I steer clear of the work so as not to fall victim of that which Stephen Spielberg had warned? Rather than struggle with this internal debate, I brashly (and hurriedly) submitted the application and left the decision to the destiny as ascribed by the licensing agents. As there is at this time no suspense remaining in this regard (as you would not be reading this note had the application been denied), I now find myself working not only on a dream project but with a dream production staff and a dream cast. Had so many events not have transpired in the manner in which they did, you may have found yourself reading a note in some other theatre about some other production. But the winds of fate have brought us all here together for the journey upon which you are about to embark as a member of the audience and a journey which started for me with some of the most talented people I have ever met some four months ago. I truly hope you will enjoy the performance you are about to see as my dream has already come to fruition. Jedlicka PAC 3
