A B O U T L I C H I AO - P I N G DA N C E Li Chiao-Ping Dance (LCPD) was founded in 1990 when Li Chiao-Ping premiered her renowned, solo evening work, “Yellow River,” in the Mozart and His Times Festival at Theater Artaud in San Francisco. As a resident company at the stateof-the-art Overture Center for the Arts, LCPD produces two to three major performances each year. The company is dedicated to the idea of “dancing through life”, and offers workshops and touring programs throughout North America and abroad, providing educational opportunities for aspiring dance professionals as well as students in grades K-12 (Dance for Young Audiences) and senior center communities. Reflecting and supporting the artistic vision of Li Chiao-Ping and promoting tolerance and respect through our work, LCPD pushes the edges of modern dance while producing and presenting highly original performance works. We strongly believe you can do both—present art that represents high levels of achievement and professionalism as well as art that is inclusive.

For the past 20 years, Ms. Li’s work has been presented and screened throughout North and South America, from New York City to Buenos Aires. LCPD has performed in several festivals in the United States, such as Jacob’s Pillow (MA), Bates Dance Festival (ME), American Dance Festival (NC), Dance Now (NY), Highways (CA), Movable Beast Dance Festival, Women on the Edge Festival (CA), DUMBO Dance Festival (NY), Cleveland Dance Festival, and 2000 Feet Festival.

LCPD has been presented at The Kennedy Center, Alverno College, UC Santa Barbara, University of Utah, University of Maryland at College Park, James Madison University, Joyce SoHo, Duke University, Illinois Wesleyan University, Virginia Commonwealth University, P.S. 122, ODC Theater, Theater Artaud, Highways Performance Space, and Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church.

DEAR FRIENDS Welcome to the 2nd year of “The Knotcracker” production! “The Knotcracker” was conceived almost two years ago. I decided (k)not to do a version of “The Nutcracker,” but rather create something new instead. This led me on a journey similar to that of my protagonist Little Miss Steps: trying to figure out how to find my self inside of this world, where conformity is valued, I discovered the spine of this new work. As a teacher, I sometimes feel like a detective, trying to untangle the knots of my students’ bodies, thinking, and movement patterns. As an eternal student, I myself know how I am a challenge to my favorite chiropractor, who diligently attempts to solve me like some kind of puzzle. Bullying and its effects on everyone is a societal concern and the story within “The Knotcracker” continues to have relevance. I am an optimist and owe much to my parents, who left China for the American Dream, the dream of a better life. I am also grateful to this wonderful cast of professional and non-professional artists/performers who have collaborated with me to bring this work to life and to celebrate the idea of community and diversity. Wrapped up in this program meant to delight and entertain is a wish for mutual respect and acceptance of differences. May you have prosperity, health, and happiness for yourself, your friends, family, and loved ones during this holiday season and in the new year. Thank you for coming and enjoy the show!

ARTISTS’ BIOGR APHIES Nelson Ferreira, founder of Zhong Yi Kung Fu Association, has been teaching Chinese martial arts and culture for over 25 years with a school on Madison’s east side. The Lion Dancers in “The Knotcracker” are Giulia Ferreira (head) and Sven Lichty (tail). The musicians are Cristopher Kucera, Rachel Penwell, Wesley Strey, and Jaia Werner.

Kristin Ginther (costume designer) comes from a large family of crafters, designers, and seamstresses. Everything she’s learned about costume design has come from hours spent watching her mother sew! When she’s not at the machine, Kristin works for a product design and development company and plays roller derby with Madison’s Mad Rollin’ Dolls.

Li Chiao-Ping (choreographer/dancer) was named by Dance Magazine as one of the “25 to watch”. She formed Li ChiaoPing Dance in 1990 and co-directed Dziga Vertov Performance Group from 1992-94. Renowned for her solo work, she is also well known for her multimedia and intergenerational productions. Her collaborations with Douglas Rosenberg include dance films such as “De L’eau,” “Residues,”“Periphery,”“Grace,” and a suite of dances made for the camera which were co-funded by Wisconsin Public Television and Bravo! FACT of Canada. A prolific choreographer of more than 130 works for stage and screen, Ms. Li’s dances have been shown throughout the world. Ms. Li has received numerous awards, grants and honors, including several grants from the NEA and awards from the Asian Pacific Women’s Network, National Arts Association,

and the Los Angeles Arts Council first prize awards for performance and choreography.

She has also received choreographic fellowships from the Wisconsin Arts Board and Scripps/ADF Humphrey-WeidmanLimon. Professor Li is the recipient of the Romnes Award, the Creative Arts Award from the Arts Institute, the Emily Mead Baldwin-Bascom Professorship in the Creative Arts, the Wisconsin Dance Council Award in Choreography and Performance, and the Vilas Associate Award. She was the American representative in ADF’s International Choreographer’s Program and has been commissioned by dance companies, university dance programs, and individuals around the country. Ms. Li earned her Master of Arts degree from UCLA and has been on faculty at Hollins University, Mills College, and UW-Madison where she is the Chair and continues to teach. The “Seven Solos: A Documentary”, directed by Douglas Rosenberg and made about her “Women Dancing” solo project, has been selected to premiere in the Dance On Camera Festival held at Lincoln Center on January 29, 2012 in New York.

Patrick Reinholz (composer/musician) is a cellist who performs many different genres of music, including jazz, avantgarde, contemporary, experimental, and classical music. His teachers include Jane Hollander and Professor Uri Vardi at the University of Wisconsin. Based in Madison, WI, he is a founding member of the postcontemporary electro-acoustic chamber group The Weather Duo, and of the new music ensemble Downbeat Means Attack, and the free improvisation group ELM. DA N C E R S ’ B I O G R A P H I E S Cynthia Bachhuber, a native Madisonian, graduated from Hope College with a double major in History and Dance Performance & Choreography. She worked at Trisha Brown Dance Company in New York while dancing and choreographing for the Metro Movement Project. She was thrilled to perform with Kanopy Dance Company from 2006-2008 after she returned to Madison.

Currently, Cynthia is the Campus Librarian at Globe University and has danced with LCPD productions since 2010. She thanks her wife, Jessica, for all her love and support.

Janelle Bentley, a native of St. Paul, MN, is currently a senior with the UW Madison Dance Department, pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She has performed for Carrie Hanson, Kun-Yang Lin, Susan Marshall & Company, Scott Wells, Bill Young, Cathy Young, in addition to UW-Madison faculty, Kate Corby, Maureen Janson Heintz, Li Chiao-Ping, Marlene Skog, Collette Stewart, Chris Walker, and Jin-Wen Yu. She is thrilled to be dancing for Li ChiaoPing as part of the Knotcracker!

Hildy Feen (Aunt T. Gravity) has been “up in the air” for over 10 years, performing with Aeros and now with Cycropia Aerial Dance (www.cycropia.org). She also practices Contact Improvisation, and has studied aerial dance and contact improvisation with many teachers and at several workshops across the country. Hildy has choreographed several aerial dance pieces, the most recent being “Almost” on Steel Ladder, performed at the 2011 Orton Park Festival, Madison, WI. She is grateful to be part of “The Knotcracker” for its second season.

age. Her background in theatre and various forms of dance play a role in her own work.

She has danced in pieces by Kate Corby, Jin-Wen Yu, Li Chiao-Ping, and Kun Yang Lin. Recently, she worked with Laura Glenn, Paul Dennis, and Jim Lepore at White Mountain Dance Festival in NY. Haley is honored to have this opportunity to work with Li Chiao-Ping Dance in “The Knotcracker.”

Kate Hewson is a choreographer, dancer, teacher, and administrator based in Madison. She has created over fifteen works for modern and aerial dance and received her MFA in Dance from UWMilwaukee in 2009. Kate is a co-founder of Dear Heart Dance, whose work has been recognized with awards by the Wisconsin Arts Board, the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, and the UW-Madison New Arts Venture Challenge. Kate also manages the Interdisciplinary Arts Residency Program at the UW-Madison Arts Institute.

Rachel Krinsky trained at the Wisconsin School of Ballet in the 1970s and ‘80s and was a member of Jazzworks in 1985 before leaving dance for other pursuits. She began dancing again in 2006 and became a member of Li Chiao-Ping Dance in 2007. By day, Rachel is CEO of the YWCA Madison, a non-profit organization striving to eliminate racism and empower women. Rachel thanks her husband, Scott Titus, and children, Kenna and Nathan, for their enthusiasm and encouragement.

Natalie Machado is a dancer and choreographer based in Madison, WI, currently dancing as an apprentice with Li Chiao-Ping Dance. Natalie began studying dance at the age of three and

Matan Rubinstein (composer) has been active as a composer, pianist and electronic musician, making music in a variety of contexts and venues from works for orchestra and chamber groups (with and without electronics), to Jazz Orchestras and combos, to Electronica, as well as projects for dance, film, television and interactive media. Among his notable credits as bandleader are the Modular Music Ensemble, a Nine-piece Genre-bending group, and the Sada Trio, both dedicated to performing his original compositions. Originally from Israel, Matan has lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY and Madison, WI, where he received a doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin in music composition. He now lives with his wife and three daughters in Marlboro, Vermont, where he is on the music faculty at Marlboro College.

His music is on the web at: http:// modularmusicensemble.bandcamp.com Suzanne Rubinstein (costume designer) holds a BA from The Evergreen State College, and went on to study photography and graphic design at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. She has worked in development for over ten years and was the director of development at UW Hillel Foundation. Suzanne studied sewing and garment construction at Madison’s MATC over five years ago and was thrilled to wipe the dust from her sewing machines and design costumes for Li Chiao-Ping Dance. She is married to musician, Matan Rubinstein, and has three wonderful little girls, Mia, Amalia, and Noa. Kit Stanley (costume assistant/dresser) is an undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison graduating this December with a B.S. in Dance and a major in Political Science. Kit is a modern dancer by formal training, informally a seamstress, thanks to her mother. A somewhat crafty individual, Kit dabbles in costuming, apparel creation/modification, as well as accessory and jewelry arts. She has helped costume the works of Bill Young, Carrie Hanson, Chris Walker, and Kate Corby (recently featured in Dance Magazine). Although she has worked with Li Chiao-Ping Dance before as a performer, she is excited to be able to help with production and costumes on such a fantastical show.

Milim Sung (assistant lighting designer/ assistant stage manager) is a lighting and media designer who enjoys live performances. She is also a member of the designer group, ‘Stage Works’ in Korea.

Milim’s philosophy of lighting design is to create harmony with other parts in the story such as space, sound and mood. Her design areas are from theatrical performance to architectural projects. She is currently working as a freelance lighting designer in NY, who is working in Korea as well.

She designed numerous shows including Midsummer Night’s Dream, Medea, Carousel and Gangster No. 1. Her website is www. milimsung.net. She received her MFA in Lighting Design from Carnegie Mellon University in 2011.

Ben Willis (composer/musician) is a bassist currently living in Madison, WI. His affinities lie in collaborative projects, new music, improvisation, and the merging of multimedia elements. He can be seen performing regularly with the electroacoustic chamber outfit, The Weather Duo, and the electro/funk/klezmer band The Shtetlblasters, as well as with various chamber ensembles, jazz combos, and other groups around the Madison area.

He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from UW-Madison in 2010, studying under the legendary Professor Richard Davis.

While at the UW, he participated in many ensembles and was constantly involved with and starting new collaborative ventures, including a free improvisation ensemble, ELM, an electronic jazz project, Lovely Socialite, and an avant-garde ensemble, Downbeat Means Attack. He was featured in the faculty recital of the Richard Davis Foundation 2010 Bass Conference, performing Gunther Schuller’s Quartet for Double Basses, and in a trio with Diana Gannett and David Murray, premiering an arrangement by Inez Wyrick.

Catherine Wilson (lighting designer/ stage manager) is currently an MFA candidate in lighting design at Carnegie Mellon University. Some of her past dance experience includes work with the Pacific Northwest Ballet and Seattle Theatre Group’s Dance This! in her hometown of Seattle, WA. She has also worked with the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, MA, the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY, and Tufts University in Medford, MA. She is very excited to work with Li Chiao-Ping and her wonderful group of artists.

Liz Sexe (Miss Steps) received her M.F.A. in Dance from Mills in Oakland, CA. She has performed works by Robert Battle, Rachel Berman, Alyce Finwall, Lionel Popkin and of course, Li Chiao-Ping. Sexe co-founded Dear Heart Dance in 2009 with a mission to create “fresh, local and seasonal dance.” Her own choreography has appeared with LCPD, at Danceworks and with Madison’s own Barebones Collective. Sexe teaches dance at UW-Madison and Studio 3-D. She also teaches Pilates at Capital Fitness. Sexe believes movement expression generates a fulfilling, healthy life.

Kenna Titus (Little Miss Steps) studies modern dance and ballet at Kanopy, where she has been a student since 2005. She is a sophomore at West High School. This is her second season performing in “The Knotcracker” in the role of Little Miss Steps.

Hannah Wolf received a Bachelor of Science in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has performed with Li Chiao-Ping, Chris Walker, Peggy Choy, Jin-Wen Yu, and Leda Muhana. She has also studied with Kate Corby, Karen McShaneHellenbrand, Mary Hayne, Marlene Skog and Andrea Harris at UW-Madison. Hannah has performed on Norwegian Cruiselines and has attended and performed for World Dance Alliance. Ms. Wolf has taught and choreographed dance and gymnastics at Dubuque Dance Studio and Gymnastics Club and Xtreme Dance Studio.

Nicole Roerick completed her MFA in Dance from Florida State University and her BFA from UW-Madison. She has worked with numerous artists and choreographers while performing her own work locally and nationally. She just formed the Nicole Roerick Collective and plans to premiere work in Madison in 2012. Nicole recently presented work at the DUMBO Dance Festival in Brooklyn, NY and will be showing work this month at the WestFest Dance Festival at the Merce Cunningham Studios. She is excited to work with Li Chiao-Ping and rekindle her creative endeavors in Madison.

D

nd earned her Bachelor of Science in Dance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2011. Additionally, Natalie studied dance internationally in Taiwan, Italy, and Brazil.

Currently, Natalie teaches dance to children in the Madison area at the YMCA of Dane County and Forte Studios in Mt. Horeb.
