IN CONVERSATION with David Kersnar Interview by Literary Manager MARTI LYONS
as one of the writers and the director of The Last act of Lilka Kadison, can you tell us about the genesis of this project? i was commissioned to conceive of The Last Act of Lilka Kadison almost 6 years ago by Abbie Phillips and Johanna Cooper. Abbie and Johanna Kersnar had produced id Dav er mb Me ble Ensem a radio series, One People, Many Stories, which brought together classic stories from Jewish people all over the world and told them in an episodic narrative. After success with the radio program, they had aspirations to create an evening of theatre that could bring these stories together and asked me to work with them to create a show using these stories. how did you choose the names for the characters in this play? what do their names symbolize? Lilith is from the Jewish Midrash revisionist tale of the first woman. There are many who maintain that the first woman wasn’t actually Eve but Lilith, a woman created from the same dust as Adam. Lilith is a much more independent spirit than Eve and the Lilith archetype
inspired the naming of our main character. We chose the name Lilka because it is the closest eastern European equivalent to the name Lilith. it is also a tip of the hat to a friend of ours named Lilka who was a yiddish teacher from vilna. The last name Kadison is inspired by Luba Kadison, a famous yiddish theatre star when yiddish theatre was all the rage in Europe in the 1930s. Menelik’s name is inspired by the North African ruler in the Ethiopian historical epic, the Kebra Negast. in the Kebra Negast, Menelik, born out of a union between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, becomes the King of Ethiopia and brings the Ark of the Covenant to his land. Ben Ari’s name means “son of a lion” in Hebrew. His last name, Adler, is inspired by the great yiddish actor Jacob Adler. what inspired the elements of toy theatre in this production? i really enjoy throwing many different styles together. i love seeing a theatrical mash-up. For this production we mix some amazing, straight-up psychologically realistic acting with toy theatre. Toy theatre is a tradition tracing back to the beginning of the last century, when folks could order a paper diagram outlining the design of their favorite theatrical production, cut it out, mount it on a hardback and create their own miniature theatre. Audiences could order an ibsen Lookingglass 3
production or a favorite opera, they could pay one penny for a black and white toy theatre and two pennies for one in color. They could then replicate and reenact their favorite theatre shows in their own homes. Today there are many contemporary theatre artists who have borrowed and developed this style, creating entire productions using the same techniques first developed in the toy models of the early 20th century. Jessica Thebus at Northwestern University introduced me to toy theatre and i integrated it into part of my graduate work there. Feeling confident in that style, I felt that it would be a great theatrical device for this production. Here the toy theatre is meant to represent the innovative ways that some early yiddish theatre troupes worked back in the 1930s. The toy theatre aesthetic exists in our play in two ways. First, it is a literal style of theatre that Ben Ari is performing in Poland in 1939. Second, toy theatre is also seen blown up in the larger spectacle of our production; namely the set that Jackie and Rick Penrod and the rest of our amazing production team have created.
Set design by Jacqueline and
Richard Penrod
I think the complexity of mixing these styles, the tension between the artificial theatricality and the intensely realistic experiences these actors/characters are going through, will create an exciting powder keg of a performance. what do you want the audience to walk away with after the show? i want the audience to think about the ghosts in their own lives. To create this production we unearthed all the Bens and Liliths in our past who are haunting us all at this very moment and are encouraging us to get it right in our short time on this planet, to discover our own voices, to speak our stories, and to listen to the stories of others and to pass them on.

This inevitably lead to the circuitous, gravity-defying path of producing film, animation, and public radio programs. She started ListenUp Radio with her oldest friend, Johanna Cooper, and together they created the radio series, One People, Many Stories.
