AMANDA DEHNERT Interview by Literary Manager
Marti Lyons
Left to Right: Aislinn Mulligan as Tinkerbell, Ensemble Member Thomas J. Cox as Captain Hook and Ryan Nunn as Peter Pan Photograph by Sean Williams
The process of adaptation is a challenge, and I find there are always quite a few missteps before I get on the right track. Art is like life that way, and it’s also a very personal thing to decide what is interesting about a story. Ultimately, we keep the bits we care about, try and expand on those,
Pete r Pa n n of ctio ’s pr odu rsity
Can you tell us a little bit about your process as a director/adaptor? How did you choose which parts of J.M. Barrie’s stories to include and exclude?
nive
Originally, I fell in love with the theatrical challenges in this story. I’ve always been excited by creating impossible events in the theatre. This story has human flight, a tiny fairy darting across the stage, and a ticking crocodile; all pretty high on the list of impossibilities. Then, as I started reading and rereading Barrie’s work, I realized I was falling in love with the story of Peter Pan in many other, deeper ways: ways around which I could create an adaptation and build a production. J.M. Barrie was a writer trying to capture the things that are most true about being a child, being an adult, and the distance in between. I think he created a window, or he would say a peephole, into the strange logic of children and the even stranger logic of adults. In his Peter Pan stories we get to watch these forces play themselves out forever.
and reluctantly leave the others behind. For instance, I am very interested in the aspects of Peter that are paradoxical, such as his inability to remember things ten minutes after he’s done them. But who’s to say whether he is deciding to forget or actually forgetting? Captain Hook also fascinates me. Hook is a man constantly running from his own death (the crocodile) while trying to destroy a young boy (Peter) who is somehow the child Hook always wished he could have been. I also enjoy Wendy’s storyline. Wendy is a young woman who is just at that time when she’d like to still play pretend but would also like some responsibility. So in the story we see her both playing at being a mother and eventually becoming one. Finally, I’ve decided it is important to keep Barrie in the play somehow. The author’s voice in this story is funny, beautiful, and sad. It adds a richness that simply wouldn’t be there otherwise.
Rya n And Nunn a rew Cam s Peter P pbe ll Ph an in N o otog raph rthwest ern y U
How did this show come about? What originally drew you to the story of Peter Pan?
Lookingglass Theatre 3
This production of Peter Pan is intensely physical in its storytelling. How fully imagined are those choreographed moments when you write, and how much do they evolve during rehearsal? When I’m writing I imagine all sorts of things, but I don’t set anything in stone. I find that it’s only when we start rehearsing that the play begins to take form and become real (which is a bit of a paradox in itself because what we do in theatre is make-believe!). The play evolves through collaboration, and the best collaboration happens when we all enter the rehearsal room ready to throw ourselves into a piece of work. For me, it’s not just the physical work that gets shaped by the collaborative process; it’s the entire play. As you explore the theme of perpetual youth in Peter Pan, does it bring up any memories from your childhood? I’m really fascinated by what it is to play, to use your imagination to create worlds. I can remember spending hours and hours as a
4 Lookingglass Theatre
child running around the neighborhood with my imaginary animals. In this production, the world of Peter Pan is created by children, the children we once were, and it operates by a kind of “child-logic”. Never Land is best understood through the lens of a child: how they think of things and how they play. Child-logic is very different from adult-logic. Now I can barely remember how my mind came up with those imaginary animals or what it felt like to think as a child. But, like Barrie, I wish I could remember that time more clearly. Children use play as a way to comprehend their world, they use story to understand events, and they use imagination to confront the things that are most terrifying to them. Sometimes those things are imaginary, but sometimes they are all too real. And yet, the young mind can figure out how to survive and still invent and dream. I am very moved by this resilience. It has personal significance for me, and so I want to make work that explores it. Peter Pan engages these ideas better than any story I have ever known. nnnnn
