Jen Uphoff Gray, the Artistic Director for the Forward Theater Company, agreed to share her memories of working to build a new theater company in Madison. Q. Forward Theater is celebrating its fifth anniversary this season – an exciting milestone! Tell us how it all began. On March 22, 2009, a group of theater professionals gathered around a kitchen table. All of us had made our homes in southern Wisconsin, dedicated to the idea that the best theater was created of, by, and for a community. Madison had just lost its only professional theater – and we knew what we had to do: create a new one. In a few short hours, the theater had a name, mission, and three-legged governing structure. Q. Did the company have financial backing at the start? How did you get the company up and running? That first night around the table, we dug into our pockets and came up with $56 – the deposit for a post-office box. Four years later, through the incredible generosity of sponsors, donors, ticket-buyers, and foundations, we had a season budget of $560,000. FTC has not had to borrow a penny to cover our expenses.

ART I MUSIC I THEATER I DANCE I SPORTS I MORE
Q. You have co-presented with theater companies in Milwaukee and other Wisconsin communities. How do you determine if co-presenting is the best route? We’re dedicated to enriching our audience’s theatrical experience through collaboration. We’ve partnered with artists as varied as dancers, quilters, and poets, and other nonprofit groups such as the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Dane County libraries. When we considered co-producing with another theater, we immediately thought of Michael Wright at Chamber Theatre in Milwaukee because our companies shared an interest in great new plays. Michael was as excited as we were about the artistic and financial opportunities such a partnership would provide to our artists, communities, and audiences. Q. We see quite a few Milwaukeebased artists on the roster for this season. Tell us about the Milwaukeebased artists you’ve hired and why they were chosen to help create this fifth anniversary season.

Part of the theater’s mission is to provide a home base for Wisconsin theater professionals. This idea encompasses the entire state: Madison, Milwaukee, Spring Green, and beyond. We’re excited to be featuring so many wonderful Milwaukee-based GOOD PEOPL actors in our season this year. Angela Iannone and Pic by E Zane W (April 2013 ). Susan il Deb Clifton are making their Forward debut in SONS Sween liams. L to R: ey, Ce li OF THE PROPHET, and we’re welcoming back Norman a Laura Gordo Klehr, n Moses in OR,. Norman was featured in our very first main-stage production, WHY TORTURE IS WRONG, AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM, so it’s particularly thrilling to have him join us for the fifth anniversary season. Q. Tell us what you’ve learned since you’ve headed into this adventure. Back around that kitchen table, we believed this community valued the arts and theater – so much so that we gambled on starting a nonprofit arts group in the middle of a recession. Now, five years later, we know they do. We are humbled and inspired by the magnitude of support we’ve received from the community and the enthusiasm with which our audiences have embraced us.

This season Footlights turns 25. Chapter 1:
A grant made it happen. In 1988, three of Milwaukee’s premier theatre companies (MCT, Theatre Tesseract, & Clavis Theatre) gathered together to co-write a grant. They wanted to hire a part-time sales person - someone to sell ads in their printed programs. They were each producing four productions per season and the cost of printing and producing programs was becoming an unbearable line item on the spreadsheet - not to mention a lot of work and always an afterthought!

They were small companies with staffs of one or two—dedicated to putting perfection on stage. They were not marketers, and would commonly throw together a program on the copier or at the quick print shop the night before opening. Little did they know that this application would create much more than just a sales position…
