Artistic Director MADISON BALLET
W. Earle Smith, Artistic Director W. Earle Smith has over 25 years of professional experience choreographing, teaching and performing. This is Mr. Smith’s 14th season with Madison Ballet as Artistic Director. As a dancer, D Magazine called Mr. Smith “meticulously chosen and prepared … who knows Balanchine.” The Wisconsin State Journal hails his choreography as “imaginative and … rhythmically smooth and lively,” with The Capital Times saying Artistic Director W. Earle Smith “more than delivered on every level.” Some of Mr. Smith’s principal and soloist credits with Texas Ballet Theater (formerly known as Fort Worth Dallas Ballet) include Balanchine’s Western Symphony, Four Temperaments and Who Cares, and Meija’s Sonata, Eight by Adler, Sarasate, Seasons, The Nutcracker and Cinderella. Favorite corps de ballet roles at Pacific Northwest Ballet and Fort Worth Ballet include Stowell’s Ravena, The Nutcracker (with sets and costumes designed by Maurices Sendak), Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes, Rubies, Western Symphony, Prodigal Son, Brahms Schoenberg, Agon, Concerto Barocco, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, Square Dance and Scotch Symphony, and Meija’s Brahm’s Waltzes, Les Noches, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. Mr. Smith’s preparation for his role as Artistic Director goes beyond the traditional. He worked as a program counselor for inner-city youth in New York City, as a financial and buiness analyst, and as director of special projects for a national membership association. Currently, Mr. Smith’s passion is passing on his knowledge and art through teaching and choreographing in the performing arts. He has taught workshops, conferences and master classes in the Balanchine technique and style both nationally and internationally, including guest teaching at Ballet Arizona, Ballet Pacifica and Ballet Chicago. Mr. Smith’s choreography credits in New York, New Orleans, Hawaii, Seattle, Texas and Madison include Cinderella, The Nutcracker, Night Dances, Le Luce d’ Amore, and Four Movements. Mr. Smith has long believed that collaborating with other performing arts organizations not only expands his own personal artistic growth, but strengthens the performing arts community as a whole. His work as choreographer in Children’s Theater of Madison’s Hello Dolly, Madison Symphony Orchestra’s Viennese Ball and Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s Halloween Concert demonstrates this commitment to collaboration. W. Earle Smith’s passion is sharing his love for ballet with young people. An important part of his artistic vision is to develop and expand education and outreach programs, making ballet affordable and accessible to all. The Nutcracker

About Madison Ballet MADISON BALLET
As the curtain rises on the 2012-2013 season, Madison Ballet celebrates thirty-one years of bringing the exquisite art of ballet to audiences in south-central Wisconsin. Now the second largest dance organization in the state, Madison Ballet stages professional-caliber public performances, operates a bustling dance school on Madison’s west side, and offers engaging outreach programs in area schools, libraries and community centers. Madison Ballet is proud to be one of Overture’s ten resident arts companies. The Ballet’s history began well before its incorporation in 1981 under the Wisconsin Dance Ensemble name (the current name was adopted in 2000). In the 1960s, Tibor Zana founded the Wisconsin Ballet Company and the Madison School of Ballet. In 1968, he staged the community’s first production of The Nutcracker at Madison West High School. Wisconsin Ballet Company’s roughly eighteen annual Nutcracker performances took place in Wisconsin communities from Rhinelander to Beloit. The production boasted about 70 local performers and many more contributors behind the scenes. From those roots to today’s production of the timeless holiday classic, Madison Ballet’s Artistic Director, W. Earle Smith, dubs The Nutcracker a “full-blown community event” made possible by the professional company, those who rehearse the youth performers, production staff and stagehands, and roughly 300 volunteers who help mount the production. Smith, who has served as Artistic Director since 1999, brings thirty years of professional experience as a choreographer, teacher and performer to his role. During his tenure, he has added over fifteen new works to Madison Ballet’s repertoire, including Cinderella, Peter Pan and Peter Anastos’ clever adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Smith’s repertoire works, such as Night Dances, Expressions, and Le Luce de Amore, have delighted audiences with their athleticism and roots in the Balanchine style. Over the last three decades, over 220,000 people have attended Madison Ballet’s Nutcracker. During the 2011-2012 season, over 21,000 residents saw a performance, participated in an educational or outreach program, or studied at the School of Madison Ballet. While The Nutcracker remains the linchpin of Madison Ballet’s schedule each year, performances such as Pure Ballet and An Evening of Romance show audiences a different side of the art form. Dracula, Smith’s most ambitious production to date, is set to premiere in March of 2013 and will feature steampunk style sets and costumes and a rock music score composed by Mike Massey, all of which create the perfect backdrop for Smith’s dynamic choreography. Dracula is sure to become a favorite in Madison Ballet’s impressive repetoire. In September of 2005, Madison Ballet opened its School of Madison Ballet. Annual enrollment is at 450 and growing. Alumni of the school and studio company have gone on to a number of prestigious companies and schools, such as Sacramento Ballet, Miami City Ballet, School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and Ballet Chicago. At the heart of the organization’s work is its mission to promote appreciation for and access to the art of ballet. Madison Ballet’s education and outreach programs—collectively called “Discover Dance”—are presented to the community throughout the year, many times free of charge to participants. From “Movement in Your World,” the successful creative movement program for Head Start students to “Behind the Curtains,” Madison Ballet’s Nutcracker performance exclusively for school children, Madison Ballet continues to delight both the young and young-at-heart, providing new perspectives on this timeless art form. “Our role is to promote dance throughout the community by providing performing opportunities for dancers and quality productions for audiences,” Smith said. “We want to continue those important traditions and, at the same time, strengthen the organization both artistically and financially.” With smart planning and high artistic ambitions, Madison Ballet is poised for many more years of bringing dance to south-central Wisconsin. As Susan Kepecs wrote in the January 2005 issue of Dance Magazine, “The organization is charting new ground.” With thirty one years of fertile ground now below its feet, Madison Ballet promises to keep on its toes and delight audiences for years to come. 6

Music Director MADISON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
John DeMain, Music Director Now in his 17th season as Music Director of the Madison Symphony Orchestra, John DeMain is noted for his dynamic performances on concert and opera stages throughout the world. “A gifted orchestra builder,” according to the New York Times, DeMain has built the MSO into one of America’s leading regional orchestras. In addition to overseeing its move into the magnificent Overture Hall and expanding the subscription season to triple performances, he has steadily elevated the quality of the orchestra, creating exquisite performances of ever more challenging and virtuosic works. “…It was tempting,” said The New York Times, “to compare this regional orchestra with a major international ensemble…the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.” DeMain’s active conducting schedule has taken him to the stages of the National Symphony, Seattle Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Boston Pops, Aspen Chamber Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Orchestra of Seville and the Leipzig MDR Sinfonieorchester. He has also been a regular conductor with Mexico’s Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional and National Opera of Mexico in Mexico City. DeMain also serves as Artistic Director for Madison Opera and, until recently, for Opera Pacific, where he led an unprecedented seven-company co-production of Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking in 2002. He is a regular guest conductor with Washington National Opera, New York City Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre and Los Angeles Opera, to which he returned in 2006-2007 to conduct highly acclaimed performances of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, the opera that has become his signature work. DeMain was invited by Leonard Bernstein to conduct the world premiere of the composer’s last opera, A Quiet Place, and he has since conducted the American premieres of works by Philip Glass, John Adams, Carlisle Floyd and Sir Michael Tippet. Recent guest conducting appearances include Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center, his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut with Porgy and Bess and a return to San Francisco Opera. He also conducted the Canadian premiere of John Adams’ Nixon in China with Vancouver Opera as part of the Cultural Olympiad that accompanied the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. During his celebrated tenure with Houston Grand Opera, DeMain led a history-making production of Porgy and Bess, winning a Grammy Award, Tony Award and France’s Grand Prix du Disque for the RCA recording. His critically acclaimed New York City Opera production of the opera was televised on National Public Television’s acclaimed Live from Lincoln Center series and garnered an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Classical Music & Dance Program.” Live from Lincoln Center also presented many of DeMain’s other productions, and National Public Television celebrated his contributions to the series in their 30th Anniversary Broadcast, which featured excerpts of his New York City Opera Porgy and Bess performance and of “No Puede ser” with the legendary tenor Plácido Domingo. DeMain has worked extensively with Domingo in concerts throughout the world, most notably in the celebrated 1992 Concert for the Planet Earth from Rio de Janeiro. DeMain was recently named a Fellow by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. He resides in Madison with his wife Barbara. The Nutcracker

Nutcracker Synopsis MADISON BALLET
The Nutcracker is a holiday fairy tale about a young girl, Clara, and her favorite Christmas. Her Godfather, Drosselmeyer, is a magical, mysterious character in her life. This Christmas he has a special gift for her—a beautiful Nutcracker doll. She receives the present from him at the annual family party. Very excited about the new doll, Clara wants to stay up all night with it, but her family sends her off to bed. After everyone has left and the family is asleep, Clara sneaks downstairs to look at her Nutcracker doll. She eventually falls asleep and, with a little help from Drosselmeyer’s magic, her dream begins. Clara is awoken and startled to see mice in her room. The Rat King tries to kidnap her and take her to his kingdom. Clara frantically searches for her Nutcracker doll, but it it nowhere to be found. Suddenly, the Christmas tree grows to an enormous height and everything in the room seems out of proportion. Life-size toy soldiers come to her rescue, followed closely by a life-size Nutcracker! An exhausting battle ensues and the Nutcracker saves Clara from the Rat King while his soldiers defeat the army of rats. In a cloud of smoke, Clara is magically transformed into a young woman, and her Nutcracker Prince offers his hand, taking her on a journey to his magnificent palace in a special land. Their journey takes them through the glistening Land of the Snowflakes and, finally, to an enchanted garden. There they meet new friends from Russia, Arabia, Spain and Siam—all places represented by the party-goers of earlier in the evening. They also meet the beautiful Waltzing Flowers and the playful Pulcinellas. Clara does not want to leave her handsome Prince or this beautiful garden, but on Christmas Day she awakens under the Christmas tree with all her new friends gone and her family around her. All that remains of her adventure is her Nutcracker doll and the wonderful memories of her most magical Christmas.
