Artistic Director MADISON BALLET

W. Earle Smith, Artistic Director W. Earle Smith has over 25 years of professional experience choreographing, teaching and performing. This is Mr. Smith’s 13th season with Madison Ballet as Artistic Director. As a dancer, D Magazine called Mr. Smith “meticulously chosen and prepared … who knows Balanchine.” The Wisconsin State Journal hails his choreography as “imaginative and … rhythmically smooth and lively,” with The Capital Times saying Artistic Director W. Earle Smith “more than delivered on every level.”

Some of Mr. Smith’s principal and soloist credits with Texas Ballet Theater (formerly known as Fort Worth Dallas Ballet) include Balanchine’s Western Symphony, Four Temperaments and Who Cares, and Meija’s Sonata, Eight by Adler, Sarasate, Seasons, The Nutcracker and Cinderella.

Favorite corps de ballet roles at Pacific Northwest Ballet and Fort Worth Ballet include Stowell’s Ravena, The Nutcracker (with sets and costumes designed by Maurice Sendak), Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes, Rubies, Western Symphony, Prodigal Son, Brahms Schoenberg, Agon, Concerto Barocco, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, Square Dance and Scotch Symphony, and Meija’s Brahm’s Waltzes, Les Noches, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet.

Mr. Smith’s preparation for his role as Artistic Director goes beyond the traditional. He worked as a program counselor for inner-city youth in New York City, as a financial and business analyst, and as director of special projects for a national membership association.

Currently, Mr. Smith’s passion is passing on his knowledge and art through teaching and choreographing in the performing arts. He has taught workshops, conferences and master classes in the Balanchine technique and style both nationally and internationally, including guest teaching at Ballet Arizona, Ballet Pacifica and Ballet Chicago. Mr. Smith’s choreography credits in New York, New Orleans, Hawaii, Seattle, Texas and Madison include Cinderella, The Nutcracker, Night Dances, Le Luce d’ Amore, and Four Movements.

Mr. Smith has long believed that collaborating with other performing arts organizations not only expands his own personal artistic growth, but strengthens the performing arts community as a whole. His work as choreographer in Children’s Theater of Madison’s Hello Dolly, Madison Symphony Orchestra’s Viennese Ball and Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s Halloween Concert demonstrates this commitment to collaboration.

W. Earle Smith’s passion is sharing his love for ballet with young people. An important part of his artistic vision is to develop and expand education and outreach programs, making ballet affordable and accessible to all.

Celebrating 30 Years MADISON BALLET

In 2011, Madison Ballet proudly celebrates its thirtieth anniversary. This milestone offers a moment to reflect upon Madison Ballet’s beginnings, its artistic and educational successes to date, and its future direction. Just as importantly, it is a time to recognize and thank all who have made this anniversary possible: young dancers and their teachers, volunteers, donors, community partners, and audiences of all ages. Without their passion for dance, Madison Ballet would not be where it is today.

Now the second-largest dance organization in Wisconsin, Madison Ballet stages professional-caliber public performances, operates a bustling dance school on Madison’s west side, and offers outreach programs in area schools, libraries and community centers.

The Ballet’s history began well before its incorporation in 1981 under the Wisconsin Dance Ensemble name (the current name was adopted in 2000). In the 1960s, Tibor Zana founded the Wisconsin Ballet Company and the Madison School of Ballet. In 1968, he staged the community’s first production of The Nutcracker at Madison West High School.

“Tibor started a great tradition,” says W. Earle Smith, Madison Ballet’s artistic director since 1999. “He brought dance to the forefront of the Madison arts community.”

As artistic director of the Wisconsin Ballet Company, Zana sparked interest in dance by attracting international stars to perform with his company, including Rudolf Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn, Edward Villella and Desmond Kelly. Zana also reached thousands statewide through lecture/demonstrations in schools, clubs and even the Waupun prison.

Wisconsin Ballet Company’s roughly eighteen annual Nutcracker performances took place in Wisconsin communities from Rhinelander to Beloit. The production boasted about 70 local performers and many more contributors behind the scenes.

Zana’s zest for dance led to national awards for choreography and the Governor’s Award in Support of the Arts. His enthusiasm also fostered community involvement in dance productions, a tradition JoJean Retrum continued for 22 years, after she co-founded the Madison Youth Ballet (later named the Wisconsin Dance Ensemble) in 1977 with Charmaine Ristow and Vivian Tomlinson.

Gretchen Bourg, Madison Ballet’s general manager, says, “Our rich history and the community’s unwavering support form the foundation of today’s Madison Ballet.”

As artistic director, Smith dubs The Nutcracker a “full-blown community event” made possible by the professional company, those who rehearse the youth performers, production staff and stagehands, and roughly 300 volunteers who help mount the production.

“It’s not just about one person, it’s about the community,” Smith said. “Many people have been involved in moving the organization forward, and today an entire community continues to make things happen for us.” Smith’s background includes over thirty years of professional experience as a choreographer, teacher and performer.

During his tenure, Smith has added over fifteen new works to Madison Ballet’s repertoire, including Cinderella, Peter Pan and Peter Anastos’ clever adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which local dance critic Katie Reiser proclaimed “frothy and fun.” Smith’s repertoire works, such as Night Dances, Expressions, and Le Luce de Amore, have delighted audiences with their athleticism and roots in the Balanchine style.

Celebrating 30 Years MADISON BALLET

Overture Center for the Arts. The Ballet is proud to be one of Overture’s ten resident arts organizations.

Over the last three decades, over 220,000 people have attended Madison Ballet’s Nutcracker. During the 2010-11 season, over 21,000 residents saw a performance, participated in an educational or outreach program, or studied at the School of Madison Ballet. While The Nutcracker remains the linchpin of Madison Ballet’s schedule each year, performances such as Pure Ballet and An Evening of Romance show audiences a different side of the art form.

Madison Ballet opened its School of Madison Ballet in September 2005 with seventy students. Today, enrollment is at 450 and growing each year. Alumni of the school and studio company have gone on to a number of prestigious companies and schools, such as Sacramento Ballet, Miami City Ballet, School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and Ballet Chicago.

Dance education also reaches Head Start preschool classrooms around the city through Madison Ballet’s “Movement in Your World,” a seven-week creative movement program.

Head Start boosts school readiness for economically disadvantaged children, and “Movement in Your World” ensures that children have valuable opportunities for selfexpression and exposure to the arts.

Other community outreach programs such as “Madison Ballet: Offstage & Personal” and “Behind the Curtains” bring the magic of Madison Ballet to both the young and youngat-heart, providing new perspectives on this timeless art form.

“Our role is to promote dance throughout the community by providing performing opportunities for dancers and quality productions for audiences,” Smith said. “We want to continue those important traditions and, at the same time, strengthen the organization both artistically and financially.” Presently, the Ballet is working on a “shared service” project with Madison Youth Choirs; the two organizations currently share programming space and will eventually share office space and certain administrative functions, streamlining operations and costs for both.

With both smart planning and high artistic ambitions, Madison Ballet is poised for many more years of bringing dance to south-central Wisconsin. As Susan Kepecs wrote in the January 2005 issue of Dance Magazine, “The organization is charting new ground.” With thirty years of fertile ground now below its feet, Madison Ballet promises to keep on its toes and delight audiences for years to come.

Brittany Benington Brittany Benington began her dance training in Huntington Beach, CA. When she was 16 she traveled to San Francisco to train with the San Francisco Ballet School. Brittany has also studied during the summers with American Ballet Theatre, School of American Ballet, Boston Ballet, and Houston Ballet Academy. She began her professional career dancing with the City Ballet of San Diego.

Brittany went on to dance with the Los Angeles Ballet where she performed roles in ballets such as: Concerto Barocco, Agon, Rubies, The Four Temperaments, and Who Cares. In addition, she has performed with Ballet Tucson in Arizona. Recently, Brittany has appeared dancing in television and film. She danced in the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, as well as the television show House.

Jacob Brooks Jacob Ashley is a Chicago native who began his dance training in 2002 at the Chicago Academy for the Arts under the instruction of Randy Duncan, Guillermo Leyva, Sandra Kaufmann, and the late Anna Paskevska. In 2006, he attended Columbia College Chicago’s modern dance program under the direction of Margi Cole, Jeff Hancock, Carrie Hanson, and Emily Stein. He later became an apprentice for Luna Negra Dance Theater. He also attended Ballet Chicago’s summer program under the intense training of Daniel Duel and Patricia Blair.

Jacob has been a guest artist for such companies as the West Indian Folk Dance Company, Momenta, Ballet Chicago, Chicago Festival Ballet, Madison Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, and San Diego Opera.

Rachelle Butler A Madison native, Rachelle is excited to be a part of Madison Ballet’s new season. Formerly with Sacramento Ballet, her training includes dancing with Ballet Chicago, Miami City Ballet School and The Rock School of the Pennsylvania Ballet. She has enjoyed performing previously with Madison Ballet in its productions of The Nutcracker and Cinderella. Her favorite roles include principle couple in Balanchine’s Allegro Brilliante, Second Violin in Balanchine’s Concerto Barrocco, and Who Cares? pas de deux. Rachelle would like to thank her mother, father and sister for their constant support and Earle Smith for his guidance and support.

Genevieve Custer Weeks Genevieve Custer Weeks was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, and received her early training with Kate McQuade and Charmaine Ristow. At the age of fifteen she moved to Chicago to study at the School of Ballet Chicago with Daniel Duell and Patricia Blair, and became a founding member of the Ballet Chicago Studio Company.

Additionally, Ms. Weeks supplemented her training with study at the San Francisco Ballet School, American Ballet Theatre, and in the Exploring Ballet with Suzanne Farrell program at the Kennedy Center. In the Fall of 2002, Ms. Weeks accepted a contract with the Oakland Ballet, performing a variety of wonderful roles, including the bride in Nijinska’s Les Noces, and had a number of works created on her, including a pas de trois in Donald McKayle’s Ella. Ms. Weeks currently lives in San Francisco with her husband, Andrew Weeks, a photographer, and their son, Sullivan. She serves as the founding director of Tutu School (TutuSchool.com), and is always thrilled to perform where she truly feels at home, in Madison.

Katy Fredrick Katy is originally from Memphis, TN where she received her training at Ballet Memphis under the direction of Janet Parke and Associate Artistic Director Karl Condon. She also attended summer intensives with Boston Ballet and American Ballet Theater. After performing ten years with the Ballet Memphis Junior Company, she was invited to join the main company. While at Ballet Memphis, she performed in Mark Godden’s What Can I Tell My Bones and Joseph Jeffries’ Cinderella. She danced a season with Nashville Ballet before moving to Chicago, where she has danced with Paul Abrahamson’s Chicago Ballet, as a guest artist in Larry Long’s The Nutcracker, and at the Lou Conte Dance Studio at Hubbard Street. Katy has also danced in the annual Dance in the Parks series and is a member of Chicago Freelance Dance. She is excited to return to Madison Ballet this season.

Jennifer Holoubek Originally from Aurora, Illinois, Jennifer Holoubek received her training at DanceWest Ballet under the direction of Ricardo and Regina Moyano. While at DanceWest Ballet, Jennifer also studied with Ernesto Quenedit, Catalina Garza, and Ludmila Lupu.

Performing experiences include a soloist role in Paquita and Myrtha in full-length Giselle. Jennifer joined Connecticut Ballet for the 2008-2009 season. Under the direction of Brett Raphael, she danced a demi-soloist part in La Bayadere repertoire, as well as roles in Romeo and Juliet. Recently Jennifer has performed with the Civic Ballet of Chicago under the direction of Dolores Lipinski Long and Birute Barodicaite (Coppelia). Jennifer joins Madison Ballet for the 2011 Nutcracker season.

Megan Horton Megan was born in Camarillo, CA and trained primarily at the Westside School of Ballet in Santa Monica, CA. She spent several summers at the School of American Ballet in addition to the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School’s year-round program. Her professional experience includes appearances with the Colorado Ballet, Columbia City Ballet, the Sacramento Ballet, and Madison Ballet among others. Megan also teaches ballet and is pursuing her B.A. through the LEAP program of St. Mary’s College of California.

Marguerite Luksik Marguerite Luksik is a native of Johnstown, PA. She trained with the Allegheny Ballet Academy under Deborah Anthony and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Graduate Program. In June 2002, Ms. Luksik participated in an exhibition performance at the USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi. While at Madison Ballet her repetoire includes Puck in Peter Anastos’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Spring Fairy in W. Earle Smith’s Cinderella, as well as Clara in Smith’s Nutcracker. She has also danced with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Ballet Austin, Chicago Ballet, and Peoria Ballet, performing works by choreographers such as Steven Mills, Stanton Welch, Ben Stevenson, Terrence Orr, Thaddeus Davis, and Paul Gibson.

Phillip Ollenburg Originally from Milwaukee, Phillip began training with Milwaukee Ballet School at the age of four. He continued at Young Dance Academy under the instruction of Sandra Young, Lisa Price and Laura Faria-Sciortino. Mr. Ollenburg studied at the University of Iowa, graduating with a B.S. in microbiology and a minor in dance.

While in school Phillip worked under George de la Pena, Alan Sener, Deanna Carter, Bill Young and Donald McKayle and was a guest with the University of Iowa’s Dancers in Company, performing George Balanchine’s ValseFantaisie. He worked with Duarte Dance Works and Kayle + Company, performing at Link’s Hall in Chicago and Joyce SoHo in New York. He also guested with the Dance Theatre of Iowa and Ballet Quad Cities. Since graduation Phillip spent a season with Ballet Austin where he appeared in Thang Dao’s Quiet Imprint and Stephen Mill’s The Nutcracker as the Rat King. Mr. Ollenburg has worked with River North Contemporary Dance Chicago, Minnesota Dance Theatre and Jaxon Movement Arts and is currently a company member of NoMi LaMad Dance, Inc. under the direction of Laura Kariotis and Madeline Renwick. Phillip is excited to be returning to Madison Ballet this season.

Rachel Premo Rachel Premo, resident of Chicago, holds a BFA in Dance Performance from Northern Illinois University. Rachel premiered her choreography in Chicago at Dance Chance, in February 2011, and since then, her piece “Tabula Rasa” was selected to be performed at Dance in the Parks, in the Summer of 2011. This summer Rachel has also presented choreography for Freespace, in St. Charles, as well as performed in a trio at the Produce series in Chicago in July. Some of Rachel’s previous performances include guest work at several local companies, as well as performing various roles in Giselle, Le Corsaire, The Nutcracker, Pas de Quatre, and numerous Art for Life Benefits. Aside from performing, Rachel currently teaches at The Dance Factory, in Delavan Wisconsin.

Shannon Quirk Shannon Quirk, from Orange, California, began her classical training with Orange County Regional Ballet and continued her studies at the University of California, Irvine where she earned a BFA in Dance Performance. During her tenure, she worked with distinguished faculty members David Allen, Evelyn Cisneros, Jodie Gates, Molly Lynch, and Donald McKayle and performed various works by William Forsythe, Jodie Gates, and Molly Lynch. After graduating, she worked with Pasadena Dance Theatre under the direction of Cynthia Young and Laurence Blake. Additional training also includes Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Ballet Austin.

Brian Jamie Roethlisberger Growing up in Verona, WI, Brian received his formal training from W. Earle Smith at the School of Madison Ballet and Daniel Duell and Patricia Blair at Ballet Chicago. He danced professionally with Sacramento Ballet, and toured to China, Mexico, Hawaii, and the South Pacific, performing roles in George Balanchine’s Who Cares, Tarantella, Allegro Brillante, Western Symphony, Scotch Symphony, Symphony in C, and Donizetti Variations; Petipa’s Sleeping Beauty; Ron Cunningham’s A Streetcar Named Desire and Etosha; Stephen Mills’s Taming of the Shrew; Ron DeJesus’s 7 Vignettes; Daniel Duell’s Mono No Aware; and Peter Anastos’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, among others. He performed with California Music Circus in Hairspray and as a lead singer with Holland America Cruise Line. Brian lives in New York City and is pursuing his B.A. through the LEAP program. He is excited to be back in Madison for the holidays, and would like to thank his family for their support.

Nutcracker Synopsis MADISON BALLET

The Nutcracker is a holiday fairy tale about a young girl, Clara, and her favorite Christmas.

Her Godfather, Drosselmeyer, is a magical, mysterious character in her life. This Christmas he has a special gift for her—a beautiful Nutcracker doll. She receives the present from him at the annual family party. Very excited about the new doll, Clara wants to stay up all night with it, but her family sends her off to bed. After everyone has left and the family is asleep, Clara sneaks downstairs to look at her Nutcracker doll. She eventually falls asleep and, with a little help from Drosselmeyer’s magic, her dream begins.

Clara is awoken and startled to see mice in her room. The Rat King tries to kidnap her and take her to his kingdom. Clara frantically searches for her Nutcracker doll, but it it nowhere to be found. Suddenly, the Christmas tree grows to an enormous height and everything in the room seems out of proportion. Life-size toy soldiers come to her rescue, followed closely by a life-size Nutcracker! An exhausting battle ensues and the Nutcracker saves Clara from the Rat King while his soldiers defeat the army of rats.

In a cloud of smoke, Clara is magically transformed into a young woman, and her Nutcracker Prince offers his hand, taking her on a journey to his magnificent palace in a special land.

Their journey takes them through the glistening Land of the Snowflakes and, finally, to an enchanted garden. There they meet new friends from Russia, Arabia, Spain and Siam—all places represented by the party-goers of earlier in the evening. They also meet the beautiful Waltzing Flowers and the playful Pucinellas. Clara does not want to leave her handsome Prince or this beautiful garden, but on Christmas Day she awakens under the Christmas tree with all her new friends gone and her family around her.

All that remains of her adventure is her Nutcracker doll and the wonderful memories of her most magical Christmas.
