March/May Programs 1

PROGR A M Tonight’s Program, Sounds of the Cinema will take you on a journey through the exciting jazz and classical music that has been used in movies as well as great selections from film soundtracks. The program will be announced from the stage. PRESIDIO BR ASS Since forming in 2006, Presidio Brass has rocketed to success as the face of a bold new generation in brass entertainment. By combining a brass quintet, piano and percussion instruments with fresh, original arrangements, their unique sound has become a trademark for the ensemble from San Diego, CA, captivating audiences everywhere. Through their touring show of Hollywood’s greatest hits, Sounds of the Cinema, these five young men present film music with a good dose of wit and humor that together have become hallmarks of every Presidio Brass performance. Audiences and music critics agree, Sounds of the Cinema is “Two Thumbs Up”, a “Must See!” The show has been enjoyed internationally, with performances and educational outreach programs throughout North America. Presidio Brass has performed in over 40 states, conducted master classes at many of America’s finest colleges and universities, and have been featured on National Public Radio. Each member of the ensemble began his music career by joining their school’s band program. Inspired by the dedication of their school music teachers, Presidio Brass came together with the primary mission to promote music education and music appreciation in youngsters. This is why at every opportunity, performances are coupled with a master class or school program for which the quintet volunteers their time. Members of the Presidio Brass have performed with major symphony orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Las Vegas Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony and the San Diego Symphony. When not on tour, they continue to perform with orchestras, maintain private teaching studios at local universities, arrange and compose new music, assist with public school music programs, and operate an annual summer music camp for students of all ages. In addition to performing as a brass quintet, Presidio Brass performs regularly as a part of Millennia Consort, one of the nation’s premiere brass, organ and percussion ensembles. Millennia Consort is active in commissioning new works as well as arrangements of popular classical music. The latest recording by the ensemble, Pictures of a New Beginning, includes commissions of new music by Craig Phillips, John Hirten and Jon Naples, and features an arrangement of the orchestral favorite Pictures at an Exhibition by Presidio Brass’ tubist, Scott Sutherland. The Presidio Brass has released three recordings: Stolen Moments, a collection of popular classical and jazz selections, Christmas Day, an assortment of well-loved holiday favorites, and Sounds of the Cinema, which includes pieces from their signature stage performance of the same name. Look for their newest CD of popular American music, which will be released in 2013.

Combining traditional dance and music with the most up to date stage technology, the show is a thousand year old journey executed with all the advantages of the modern day stage show. Rhythm of the Dance has heralded a new era in Irish entertainment, internationally rated as one of the most popular and busiest Irish step dance shows in the world. Her most memorable appearance to date, was performing at the opening of the Special Olympics in 2003, in front of a stadium audience of 85,000 and a television audience of millions, and sharing the stage with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mohammed Ali and Bono. She finished her touring career with Rhythms of Ireland, an extensive tour of Australia with Lord of the Dance’s Michael Donnellan. Having a wide range of talents, Doireann took to golf during her travels and now, as a qualified Irish dancing teacher, she combines her teaching in the family dance school with her passion for the game of golf, representing Connaught at interprovincial tournaments.

PROGR A M Lost In Africa is a spectacle for the eyes, ears, and the heart. Death-defying stunts, comedy, audience participation, and heart-pounding music combine to create a production that will have all ages on the edge of their seat. The story begins with a tourist visiting Africa. After being separated from his group, he stumbles upon an abandoned native village. One morning, he explores the various items left behind and begins to play the drums, which startles the natives. The tourist has nothing to defend himself with and pushes the blame to‌The Audience! Audience members will be worked into the plot and brought to stage throughout the show in this exciting and entertaining African romp. Danger will always be prevalent as the natives figure out different ways to finish the tourist off. Each major production number is tied together with the tourist buying time creating games with the items the natives are using to get him. The more the natives are entertained, the longer he has to live, and hopefully win them over so he may survive. Lost In Africa features many amazing stunts never seen in North America. These amazing athletes have performed for corporate events, fairs, and festivals around the world. For full program details and biographies, please see the program insert.
