SPECIAL THANKS BOA, The Faculty and Staff of WFB, Buildings and Grounds crew, Ms. Christine Armstrong, Mr. Robert Radke, Mr. Jeffrey Shoemaker, Ms. Amber Kind-Keppel, and Dr. Sophie Kramer. D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S Marvin’s Room is based upon Scott McPherson’s experiences with older relatives who lived in Florida. McPherson also cared for his partner, cartoonist and activist Daniel Sotomayor, who died from AIDS and these experiences influenced his writing. McPherson himself died in 1992 of AIDS at age 33. Marvin’s Room had its premiere in Chicago in 1990, directed by David Petrarca. It then played off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, opening on 15 November 1991, and then went on to run at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington. The play won the 1992 Outer Critics Circle Award for best play, the 1992 Drama Desk Award for best play and the Joseph Jefferson Award in Chicago for best original work. It was adapted for a film of the same title in 1996. This play is about taking care of family. Having two adult daughters who still need some care and aging parents who are needing more and more, I see the dilemma the characters of this play face. Though this may be described as a drama, the comic elements throughout will engage the audience. Thanks to all the students in Drama Club and their parents for the support. A special thank you to my wife, Karen, and our wonderful daughters, Callie and Rachel. BIOGR APHIES Emily Nelson, (Ruth ‘13) is thrilled to be playing the part of Ruth in WFBHS’s production of Marvin’s Room this year, expecially since this is her first time playing a lead. She would like to thank her fellow cast members for their dedication and acceptance, Jacob for his logistical work and patience with missed lines, and of course Mr. Coleman for his advice and direction. She would also like to assure her sister that she doesn’t need her to practice lines anymore. Dana Jankins, (Lee ‘13) is thoroughly, fantastically thrilled to be a part of this groovy cast. You may have recognized her as the sassy young sophisticate, Thomasina Coverly, in Arcadia, or as the “wise” Priscilla Girl, Gloria, in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Dana has loved Whitefish Bay High School theatre from the very beginning, and this show has been no exception. She would like to thank Mr. Coleman for this fantastic
opportunity, role, and his guidance, the rest of the cast and crew for being generally awesome, and everyone else who has supported her through the last few months. Jacob Sevart, (Stage Manager ‘13) is proud to serve as stage manager. He’s been whispering into headsets and darting through shadows since Freshman year. He has worked as a spotlight operator, light board operator, and grip, though he specializes in sound. He is thankful for a talented cast and a dedicated crew and for the opportunity and the challenge of being the steady hand at the helm of the ship that has been his home for the last three years. Jonathan Dean, (Head Grip ‘13) is tickled pink at being both Deck Chief and Head Grip in his 11th show here at WFB high school. He’s been working as a grip on Marvin’s Room

stage crew since freshman year, but you might remember him, without the black hair, as Bun-Foo, the kidnapping Chinese brother from Thoroughly Modern Millie, or a tap-dancing sailor from Anything Goes. If you’ve seen him working on stage as a grip, he hasn’t been doing a very good job. Molly Collins, (Funeral Home Director ‘13) This is her first time doing a play at Whitefish Bay, and she couldn’t be more excited! She’d like to thank her teachers, family, and friends for their support in the last four years and hopes ya’ll enjoy the show! Grace Armstrong, (Charlie ‘14) is thrilled to be a part of Marvin’s Room. In the past, she has worked mainly on crew, but you may have also seen her play roles in musicals ranging from a lost island girl (Little Ti-Moune, Once on This Island) to a dancing flapper (Priscilla girl, Thoroughly Modern Millie). She would like to thank Mr. Coleman, her friends, and her family for inspiring her to participate in theatre and for always being supportive! Sarah Sapiro, (Bessie ‘14) is somewhat amused to be part of this production. Her acting debut was with her show-stopping one line, “No, I haven’t Mrs. Simmons” in last year’s production of Harvey. She’s enjoyed working with her crew mates and her actor pals. Shoutout to her birthday buddies Fetting! and Grace Armstrong. Rose Misey, (Dr. Charlotte ‘14) simply cannot express her enchantment with being in Marvin’s Room. Previous appearances include a cruise passenger

(Anything Goes), a maid (Arcadia), and a southern bell sold into white slavery (Thoroughly Modern Millie). Rose is grateful to all and looks forward to being involved with Bay theatre. Michael Felland, (Dr. Wally ‘14) is so very, very pleased to be a part of this wonderful production. He is excited to see this great cast and crew work so well with each other. He’d also like to thank you for your support of the WFBHS’s Drama Club, and he hopes you enjoy Marvin’s Room! Stefan Schallack, (Bob ‘15) is thrilled to be part of Marvin’s Room . You may have seen him perform in Harvey and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Stefan is a hat enthusiast, enjoys dressing up for holidays, and is often seen biking around Bay. He would like to thank his good friend Sarah Sapiro for all the help and good times during the production. Trevor Nelson, (Marvin ‘15) is ecstatic to be playing Marvin in WFB’s production of Marvin’s Room. Although this is his first time performing at the high school, Trevor has been a devoted fan of Bay Drama for many years. He is very happy to have a part to call his own, and is eager to carry on the long tradition of awesome that is Whitefish Bay Theater. John Thomure, (Hank ‘15) is delighted to be a part of this production. This is his first time being part of a Whitefish Bay performance. He would like to thank his mentors Sarah Sapiro and Matt Felland for all the guidance they’ve provided.
