Finally, a Better Way... If you want an exotic, luxury, classic, or otherwise collectible vehicle ready and able to perform at its best, it will require a higher standard of care than the average daily driver.

T

hings like limited garage space, dead batteries, flat tires, mold, paint imperfections from improper washing, and short maintenance intervals plague the busy car collector and place roadblocks between you and enjoying your cars. If you’d like to spend more time driving your fun cars and less time working on them, consider becoming a member of the Collectors’ Car Garage in Chicago. Members house their vehicles full-time at CCG’s state-of-the-art, climate-controlled, and dust-free storage facility which is equipped with 24/7 surveillance and fire protection. In addition to providing roundthe-clock access to your vehicles, the experts at CCG act as concierge and caretaker for your car, truck, or motorcycle, addressing any

and all concerns so that it’s ready to drive when you are. All vehicles are kept on battery tenders and continuously monitored for leaks and other issues. CCG offers in-house washing, detailing, and paint correction services, as well as paint protection film, dent repair, and rim repair. For bigger jobs and modifications, CCG utilizes a wide network of trusted vehicle repair, customization, and transport professionals to care for your vehicle properly. Beyond the garage, members are permitted to use the lounge and conference room 7 days a week and are always invited to attend CCG’s social events and seminars. Past and future events include things like car shows, vehicle launches, vehicle test drive events,

race screenings, member drives, industry guest speakers, professional mixers, and wine tastings. For members, participation in the social aspects of CCG is entirely optional; peerless car care comes as standard. n

WELCOME Hello and Welcome to the 15th Anniversary of the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance! We are so pleased to have you join us for this special anniversary event! Fifteen years ago, this event was the dream of a group of people from the WI Region of the Classic Car Club of America. Now under the guidance of the Masterpiece Ltd. charitable board, this event has raised over $350,000 for local charities. The event continues to evolve with the expansion of our Show & Glow Paddock area, our popular Saturday morning Motor Tour and increased engagement with THE collector car partner, Hagerty Classic Car Insurance. In 2019 we celebrate our 15th anniversary event with a celebration of Porsche in 3 feature classes and are excited to reflect a great sample of the Roarin’ 20s decade with cars of the period. As we celebrate and reflect back on 15 years, reflect back on your own years and think about what class of cars exhibited today best reflects YOU? Is it the Sampling of Antiques? The Classic Era? Were you Cruisin’ America or were you cruisin’ down the strip in your Historic Hot Rod? Join our radio partners Captn Bob and Arlo as they broadcast live on Sunday on WI Hot Rod Radio! Or were Muscle Cars more your thing? Perhaps your high school history included the ‘big hair’ years of the Awesome ‘80s and ‘90s Performance cars? If you have spent any time in England, you will recognize many of the vehicles from our All Things British class, including a London Taxi! While the car is no longer made, we turned to Pontiac when we wanted Power and hope you like the class we have created for you today. At my house, there is no room for a Single Seat Race Car because we would fight over who got to drive it! More likely you could be found just enjoying life and driving around in a Sports and Touring car. It is our privilege to bring all these cars to a beautiful location that is the Milwaukee Lakefront. Better known lately for our basketball and baseball team, Milwaukee is a city rich in culture and rich in charitable giving. The funds for this event will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, Autism Society of Southeastern WI and Meta House. Charitable giving is the core of this event and we thank our sponsors, our board and committee members, class chairs and every other volunteer that helps make this weekend possible! Thank you also to each exhibitor who joins us this weekend. We know you go through tremendous effort to bring your cars from across the country for us to enjoy. WHAT IS A CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE? Some may not be familiar with the term concours d’Elegance. The correct pronunciation is “concour day elagahnce”or “concour” – no “s” – for short. A fancy term that is appropriate for fancy cars that are judged for a number of attributes including originality, quality, provenance, historical significance, rarity and plain old desirability. Think “art on wheels.” Unlike your typical car show an owner must present an application to enter the concours, which is then reviewed by a selection committee headed by Concours Chair Carrol Jensen. Owners can request their vehicle be a judged or be a non-judged (exhibition only) entry. All selected vehicles in the concours judging are then grouped into classes

comprised of similar vehicles from the same era, but often comprised of many different makes. Come show day a team of judges selected and led by our Chief Judge Colin Comer follow detailed judging guidelines while they carefully inspect over 100 judged concours entries on the field in the various classes. They will then select a best in class vehicle as well as up to two awards of excellence for the runners-up in each class. All class award winners are then judged against each other for the coveted Best in Show award in both Sport and Elegance categories. A number of other Premier Awards in addition to the Class Awards will also be selected by the judging team. These include such awards as Best Interior, Best Original, Best Pre-War, Best Post-War, among others, as well as the People’s Choice award voted on by spectators. Spectators are welcome to follow this exciting process from start to finish at the 2019 Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance. Judging starts at 9:30 a.m. and the awards presentation kicks off at the dais at 2:30 p.m. with an introduction to our charitable partners followed by the Class and Premier Awards.

THE SHOW & GLOW PADDOCK In the Show & Glow Paddock you will find a vast array of great vehicles representing many eras. From Muscle cars to European sports cars, Detroit iron from the ‘50s & ‘60s, motorcycles and specialty vehicles. We have had exhibited signature cars such as Richard Petty’s signed one-off Charger and a Ferrari F-40 once owned by Indy Car driver Graham Rahal. You will find Porsches, Mercedes, Rolls Royce, MGs Jaguars, Chevys, Pontiacs and more. The Show & Glow Paddock is a celebration of the classic cars and motorcycles that are driven. No garage queens here. From mean machines to boulevard cruisers, this is a celebration of the vehicles that continue to keep the car collecting hobby alive and well. Local car clubs come out in force with their members’ vehicles to celebrate and enjoy the wonderful sights of Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee skyline, all while benefiting our charities.

12

You’ll never know what beautiful, rare or exotic car will be in the next row. There are hundreds of amazing cars to see and even more wonderful owners to talk to. Judging will begin at approximately 9:30am

JOHN LING, CHIEF JUDGE EMERITUS For nearly a decade, John Ling served as Chief Judge of the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance, sharing his extensive knowledge and judging experience. In 2016, Mr. Ling retired from his role as Chief Judge of the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance and The Masterpiece Ltd. board of directors named Mr. Ling Chief Judge Emeritus to honor his long tenure with the Concours. It was during these formative years that Mr. Ling’s extensive knowledge and experience helped shape the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance into the exceptional show it is today. Mr. Ling, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., got the car collecting and vintage racing bug at the age of 13 when he bought his first car, a 1931 Chevrolet Coupe. That was the start of a lifelong love of cars. He owns or has owned nearly every marque from Alfa Romeo to Zagato over the past 50 years. In 1978 Mr. Ling started Silverstone Co., Ltd., an automobile restoration company that he owned and operated until 1998. It continues to operate today under new ownership as Streetworks, making it one of the oldest continuously operating restoration firms in the country. Mr.

Ling’s experience in concours d’elegance circles includes competing as well as judging. He has twice competed at Pebble Beach, winning a Senior Award in 1989 for the Most Elegant-Closed Car. Mr. Ling’s current concours-judging resume includes Pebble Beach since 1989 and Boca Raton, since 2011. In the past he has served as a judge at numerous events including Concours d’Elegance of America at Meadow Brook, Troy, Michigan, Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance, Hillsborough, Calif., Glenmore Gathering, Canton, Ohio; Stan Hywet Hall Car Show, Akron, Ohio and the Chicago Concours, Chicago, IL. As Chief Judge Emeritus, Mr. Ling will again join Colin Comer, our Chief Judge of four years, on the Concours lawn as the 2019 Judging Team reviews the magnificent vehicles in 14 different categories ranging from Antiques, Roaring ‘20s and Classic Era to our new feature classes of Historic Hot Rods and Awesome ‘80s and ‘90s Performance cars. We are all thrilled to have Chief Judge Emeritus John Ling join us for the 15th Anniversary celebration of the show he was so instrumental in creating. Welcome back, John!

DENNIS GAGE AND MY CLASSIC CAR Dennis Gage, producer and host of My Classic Car, will be part of the 2019 Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance, Aug. 4, in Veterans Park. Gage and his crew will be on hand to record the event, gathering footage for an upcoming episode of My Classic Car, which airs on various networks including Motortrend, NBCSN, MAVTV and Rev’n. “We are absolutely thrilled that the man with the ‘stache – Dennis Gage – will be on our grounds to capture the excitement of the 15th annual Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance,” said Mike O’Krongly, president of The Masterpiece Ltd., the nonprofit organization that hosts the weekend of events that comprise the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance. “Dennis has millions of followers and we anticipate that the program he will create will show why we believe the

Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance is one of the best juried concours in the Midwest,” O’Krongly said. “I have no doubt our attendees will enjoy seeing Dennis on Aug. 4 in Veterans Park.” Gage has always loved classic cars., acquiring a 1959 Thunderbird at the age of 15. While enjoying a successful career at some of the largest consumer products companies in the world as a chemist, Gage met the founder of a fledgling production company and together they piloted a show titled My Classic Car. Hosted by Gage, the program premiered in 1997 on TNN and has been on the air ever since. Today it reaches a combined total of over 100 million TV households in the US across all the networks it is carried on and millions more worldwide via the Internet on YouTube. “I’ve heard about the Milwaukee Concours for years but have always had a scheduling conflict with the date,” Gage said. “However, this year I was determined to get there, and I blocked the date early on. We do 26 episodes per season, but only one of those is a Concours d’Elegance, and this year it’s going to be the Milwaukee Concours!”

AN ANTIQUE SAMPLING

101

It all started here. The motorcar was not only a new-found freedom for people to travel, but there was a freedom with no boundaries on vehicle design. Companies tried different approaches, they were learning and changing with each car they built. Improvements were made without a need to wait for a model year change or a government regulation. Countless companies tried their hand in the auto business, each with their own ideas of what would be best. – Carl Jensen

THE ROARIN’ 20s

201

The war was over, and the country was soon on a roaring financial recovery. Money was flowing, women who would not show their ankles before WWI, were now in slinky flapper dresses and life was grand! A fallout of every war is that technology leaps and nothing showed this more than new automobiles. Cars were more powerful and faster. A market grew for custom coachwork on luxury cars with unique body styling, colors and upholstery done to customer tastes; and flamboyant was the flavor of the day! – Carl Jensen

HISTORIC HOT RODS

501

Louis Chevrolet was first to mainstream with aftermarket speed products which could be fitted to Model Ts. But from that day forward, people have used their creativity to add style and speed. The concept took off quickly after WWII with a large focus speed where they raced souped up jalopies on abandoned airstrips. Within a few years, the NHRA was formed as a governing body for drag racing. But beyond racing, hot rodding has become a way to express artistic creativity. – Carl Jensen

ALL THINGS BRITISH

701

The British auto industry covered the complete range from fun little playful cars to massive luxury liners. Their success in motor racing likely stung their rivals in France with the great racing successes of Bentleys and Jaguars in the early days at the French race circuit of LeMans. So, this year’s class is focused on that extensive range of everything British from a Morris Minor to a Bentley. – Carl Jensen

PORSCHE/FRONT ENGINE The front engine sports car may be in the past for Porsche, but it played a significant part in their history. In fact there was a plan to stop rear engine cars and only produce front engine water cooled models. Porsche produced a range of front engine cars that allowed the buyer to select the car that filled just the right nitch. From a nimble 944 to a high-speed exotic grand touring 928, every model was successful in competition, and made fine road cars. – Carl Jensen

POWER TO THE PONTIACS It may be argued what was the first muscle car, but the most common answer is the Pontiac GTO. Pontiac took performance serious with its rebellious management under conservative GM. This performance image was the pulse of Pontiac with its aggressive styling and punch under the hood. Right to the end of the era, Pontiac made its statement with the 1973 and 1974 Super Duty Trans Ams. Be sure to see them on the lawn today! – Carl Jensen

PERFORMANCE OF AWESOME 80s & 90s

1401

The end of the Muscle Car Era, and the Malaise Era that followed with its wheezy, wretched machines gave little hope for performance car enthusiasts. But then the 1980s dawned, and almost simultaneously manufacturers from around the world remembered that performance sells. Ford brought back “The Boss” with the 5.0L Mustangs that re-ignited the horsepower wars in Detroit, and pint-sized Pocket Rockets emerged from Japan to spark a whole new generation of performance cars and enthusiasts. Carroll Shelby even went to Chrysler to build over-achieving front wheel drive hot rods that would “go like hell.” By the 1990s it was all in full swing, with horsepower numbers escalating as fast as the width of Goodyear Gatorbacks. So join us for a journey back to a time that brought us big hair, power metal, mall rock, coke, New Coke, stonewashed jeans, and some of the machines that made us love cars again. – Colin Comer

YOUTH JUDGING Planting the seeds for the future of the collector car hobby To ensure the future of the car collector hobby, the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance provides youth with the opportunity to participate in the judging of concours entrants. For the fourth consecutive year, youth from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee will review the show field at the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance, Aug. 4, 2019, to select their favorite vehicle from among the classic, vintage and antique cars that have been invited to participate by the event’s Concours committee. Using forms and an evaluation process outlined by Hagerty, the young judges are introduced to car owners who point out key features of their cars and answer questions. In 2018 the youth selected a 1961 Triumph TR-3A as their top choice. In previous years, a 1958 Dodge Custom Royal convertible and a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach Roadster was their favorite. In addition to the Hagerty Youth Judging award, the Savaglia Investments Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin Youth Enthusiasts Award will be presented by the ASSEW Youth Enthusiast team along with Don and Karen Savaglia to the car owner that the ASSEW team selects. The ASSEW group awarded a 1978 Porsche 911SC as its winner in the past. The Hagerty Youth Award and Savaglia Investments Autism Society award will be presented from the dais at 11:30 a.m.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Doug Gotham was commissioned by The Masterpiece Ltd., board of directors, to create an original piece of art for the 2019 event program. A professional landscape architect with a passion for cars, Doug brings a unique style and vibrancy to his work. A resident of the Chicago suburb of Lombard, Ill., Doug’s family roots are in Wisconsin, where his father and grandfather were born and raised. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison where he earned a B.S.in landscape architecture with a minor in fine arts. “I studied art in high school and into college and participated in local and regional shows. I was doing mostly landscapes back then with acrylics,” Doug said. He sees the car culture as art, too. “Whether classics or hot rods, people are appreciating a three-dimensional piece of art. Some drive them and enjoy them. Others may preserve their cars and drive them rarely,” he said. He knows about the passion of car collecting. “When I was in high school, my brother bought a 1968 Mustang. Six years later, he got assigned to Germany for his job. He offered the car to me. I was in high school and drove the Mustang in my senior year of high school and through college as well as my first two years of employment. Then I parked it.” He kept the Mustang and still has it today. It has led an interesting life thus far. “My son and I, with the help of some others, restored it in 2005. My son took ownership of the Mustang in 2006 and drove it through his college days and then to Los Angeles for his first job. When he was transferred out of the country, he gave it back to me,” Doug said. Doug’s current preferred art medium is colored pencil and that is what he will use to create the 2019 program cover art. The original piece will be auctioned at the 2019 Style & Speed Social, on Saturday, Aug. 3. Doug is no stranger to the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance, which takes place on the shore of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee’s beautiful Veterans Park. He has attended the show several times as well as other concours d’elegance gatherings in the Midwest. “For my own pleasure I’ve taken photos of cars at these shows. I use the photographed car as the inspiration for an original work of art,” he said.

IT’S THE REASON WE DO THIS The Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee and Meta House have been designated as the 2019 beneficiaries of The Masterpiece Ltd., the non-profit organization that operates the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance.

The Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin supports people with autism spectrum disorders, their families, professionals, and others, by sharing information, supporting research, providing networking opportunities and promoting awareness through education and training. “The Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin is honored to be chosen as one of The Masterpiece Ltd. beneficiaries,” said Executive Director Emily Levine. “As a grass-roots organization that has provided information and support to Milwaukee families for 40 years, we’re thrilled to be affiliated with another long-time Milwaukee organization. Many individuals with autism have mechanical and engineering aptitudes, and this is a great opportunity to help them make connections, as well as raising money to support our mission: improving the lives of all affected by autism.” For more information visit www.assew.org. The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee is to inspire and empower all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2018. Known as the oldest and largest youth-serving agency in Milwaukee, the Clubs offers high quality after-school and summer programming for children ages 5-18, focusing on those who have major life obstacles, most often poverty. “The Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance celebrates the finest achievements in automobiles and invites a diverse collection

of cars to be the crowning accomplishments in the auto industry. In a similar fashion, Boys & Girls Clubs celebrates the achievements of our community’s young people as we strive to help our kids reach their greatest potential every day,” said Deonte Lewis, Associate Director of Community Relations of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. “On behalf of everyone at Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, we are thrilled to be a partner with The Masterpiece Ltd. for this important and exciting event and we are honored to be a beneficiary.” For more information visit boysgirlsclubs.org Established in 1963, Meta House ends the generational cycle of addiction by healing women and strengthening families. The agency offers addiction treatment for women in three treatment settings: inpatient residential, outpatient treatment and a recovery housing community. Meta House offers a comprehensive array of services that help women overcome their addiction and empowers them to become self-sufficient after they complete treatment. Primary services include case management, vocational and educational services, child and family services and mental health treatment. “We are thrilled to be a charity partner for this year’s Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance event. This support allows us to continue providing exceptional, holistic and effective treatment services as women in our community work to reclaim their lives and rebuild their families,” said Valerie Vidal, president and CEO.
