Welcome Welcome to the Milwaukee Concours d’ Elegance! Just outside of Milwaukee in the city of West Allis, is the oldest continuously running race track in the world at State Fair Park. With this in mind, it made the most perfect back drop for this year’s event poster which highlights our 2017 feature of “Speed – Then and Now”. We hope you will enjoy seeing the designs and technology of the early days of speed and comparing them to the technology of today. We are also thrilled to have in our Race car class an Indy 500 from the teens, 20s and 30s, including a past winner. Another feature this year focuses on Alternative Power with early cars of electric and steam power. Be sure and see our oldest car on the lawn this year, built in 1900, which is in that class. As the event continues to grow and have a greater focus on history, we have continued to receive more support from our museum partners. This year we have cars from the Studebaker Museum in Indiana, the Wisconsin Automotive Museum, The Stahl Collection in Michigan, The Automobile Gallery in Green Bay and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Additionally, Ford Motor Company generously sent us a new Ford GT for our Speed class. The Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance offers us a unique opportunity to see rolling history and art from across the country while raising funds for Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Wisconsin, Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin and Meta House. It is because of the participation from each volunteer, sponsor, exhibitor and spectator that we continue to increase our charitable giving. We are proud to say that last year the event had record attendance and gave $30,000 to these local charities. It has been an exciting year of talking with all of our exhibitors who have brought their cars from 15 states. We would like to sincerely thank each of you who brought a car to this event. We appreciate you taking the time and expense to bring it and hope you have a great motoring weekend in Milwaukee. Thank you also to the many volunteers, committee members, class chairs and sponsors who are the backbone of the success of the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance. Thank you again and enjoy this Celebration of Motoring! Carl & Carrol Jensen Concours Chairmen

The Early Years 1905 Stevens-Duryea Model R Touring

102

Mark Desch — Stillwater, MN Engine: 4 cylinder The Duryea brothers, Charles and Frank were the first to commercially build a motor vehicle in the US. Around 1901, Frank Duryea paired up with the Stevens Arms and Tool Co of Springfield MA to build automobiles. In 1905 they developed the Model R which was their first car to have a steering wheel and four cylinder engine providing 20 hp. The Model R was built between 1905 and 1908; in its introductory year the company sold 300 cars. The car has a selective sliding gear transmission with three speeds forward and one reverse. The engine is water cooled and oiled by a drip system. This car has been in my ownership for five years and has been used on many tours including the New London to New Brighton Tour (MN) and Red Flag Tour (IA).

1908 Buick F 5-Passenger Touring

103

Jim & Kathy Bloomstrand — Hoffman Estates, IL Engine: 2 cylinder/159 cid This represents one of the 8820 Buick automobiles William C Durant used as the cornerstone for founding General Motors in 1908. This 1908 Model F spent most of its life in Kansas. The previous owner did most of the restoration in the 1970s and I completed the car in 2009. We use it for touring.

1915 Cadillac 51 7-Passenger Touring

104

Jim & Kathy Bloomstrand — Hoffman Estates, IL Engine: V-8/314 cid This is an example of Cadillac’s first production V-8 engine. The car was originally sold in CA and has the original 1915 CA license medallion on the dash. It has very rare original canvas seat covers that were a $65 option. It is an excellent large automobile for touring.

1918 Roamer C-6-54 Sport Touring Jeff & Rebecca Schreiner — Mondovi, WI Engine: 303 cu in, 54 hp/6 cyl Named after a well known race horse of the era, Roamer cars were built in Kalamazoo, Michigan and were marketed to the affluent car buyer. With its hefty price of $4,000 (about two homes) the fortunate Roamer customer could select from a wide range of exterior colors and interior trimmings to their own taste.

Alternative Power While electric and steam powered vehicles trace back to the 1800s, by the turn of the century there was quite a competition between steam, electric, and gasoline power. Early electric cars were particularly popular as taxicabs within urban areas. The driving range on a Detroit Electric was advertised at exceeding 80 miles, but in actuality, tests on some early electric cars exceed 200 miles. Ironically, these are similar ranges to electric cars of today! Speeds may have been slower, but in urban areas, that had little impact in their use. Although there were many companies offering electric cars, they soon fell out of favor due to range limitations when leaving the city and lack of charging infrastructure. However, during their heyday, electric cars were very popular with ladies. Interiors were often done in soft fabrics with beautiful floral embroidery. Ads would usually show a woman driving the car and often speak of their use in shopping trips or afternoon tea. An ad for the 1917 Milburn on the lawn today shows fashionable ladies arriving at a park where other women appear to be dancing together.

up production in the 1890s and by the early 1900s, there were 84 different manufacturers in the US alone, and more in Europe. Mobile, who started in 1899, actually had 58 separate dealers across the country. One of the premium steam car manufacturers of the time was White, founded in 1900. So grand were these cars that it was the first of two cars to arrive at the White House for automotive enthusiast, President Taft, in 1909. At the Concours, we will be fortunate to show the beautiful 1908 White steam car belonging to Bob and Jackie Lederer from Elk Grove Village, IL. Stylishly dressed in its Roi-des-Belges body (often called a Tulip Phaeton, due to its unique style of beautiful curves that resembled a tulip), this car still wears its original leather upholstery. As internal combustion development rapidly took off, steam engines started to become large and expensive by comparison. Soon the market dominant steam engine was passed by with internal combustion engines. Several manufactures were lost in this process, but others who followed more than one path of power, stayed in production. Such was the case of White, who licensed a gasoline engine design from the French Delahaye Company and remained in other markets until 1980.

Carl Jensen | June 27, 2017

It is perfectly logical to understand how steam competed for market share when considering the fast growing popularity of trains at this same time. With the shortfalls of electric power and gasoline internal combustion still quite new, steam engines were a known entity offering smooth driving and a lot of power. In 1906, the Stanley brothers took their steam-powered streamliner special up to 127 mph! Steamers at the Milwaukee Concours d’ Elegance actually predate this record speed run. This year, the oldest car at the event is a 1900 Mobile steam car brought to us by Ray and Pat Morey. Steam powered cars really started to ramp

Alternative Power 1900 Mobile Runabout

202

Ray & Pam Morey — Cary, IL Engine: 2 cyl/34 cu in This Mobile is 1 of 8 known to exist and is the only unrestored known to exist. It has taken 1st Place at the Cranbrook Concours d’ Elegance.

1917 Milburn Light Electric Model 27

203

The Automobile Gallery — Green Bay, WI Engine: Electric This is one of the few Milburns existing today and it's history is known back to new. This vehicle has had 4 owners prior to Mr Red Lewis purchasing in 2015 for the Automobile Gallery. Restoration work includes replacing the upholstery from faux leather to cloth and replacing the headlights that were stolen from 3rd owner. Confirmation of many original parts was done by comparing marking to the original Milburn Parts List. Original owner was Ricard H Wright, a Durham NC tobacco magnate who upon his death, left this and a number of other cars, along with his 9000 sq ft mansion to Duke University. Mr Wright would purchase a new car each year, drive them for a year and then park them in the garage where it sat for 80+ years before it was purchased by the 2nd owner from a Duke estate sale in 2005.

1908 White L Steam Car Roi des Belge Touring

204

Bob & Jackie Lederer — Elk Grove Village, IL Engine: 20 hp steam/2 cyl compound Stylishly dressed in its Roi-des-Belges body (often called a Tulip body, due to its beautiful curves that resembled a tulip), this car still wears its original leather upholstery and maintains original mechanicals. It has gone through a mechanical restoration in order to enjoy driving this magnificent machine while still preserving its originality.

1929 Detroit Electric 98FD Brougham David LeFeber — Hartford, WI Engine: Electric This car runs on 84 volts. The top speed is around 24 mph and the car has a tiller steering and throttle. Of the 3 that were known to be made in 1929, this is the only 1 known to exist. The cost at the time was around $3000.

206

Jim & Cheryl Nicholson — Sheboygan Falls, WI Engine: Steam Previously it was owned by famous early collector James Melton, it is one of less than ten CX Stanleys left and is historically significant. It also climbed Mt. Washington in 1999 as part of the steam reenactment of F. O. Stanley’s original climb.

207

Greg Rohde & Kathy Rohde — Green Bay, WI Engine: Electric Originally manufactured in 1917 by Anderson Electric Car Company (which became the Detroit Electric Car Company in 1919). In 1931 the car was modernized at the Detroit Electric factory by lowering the roof 6 inches, updating the fenders, wheels and lights; a somewhat common practice since the company was no longer manufacturing new cars and the updated parts could come from excess factory inventory. The car was then issued a new chassis number and date.

1911 Waverley Victoria Phaeton Convertible

208

Beyer Home & Carriage Museum — Oconto, WI Engine: Electric 60VDC motor This car had been purchased by a lumber mill owner, William Arthur Holt, who lived in Oconto, Wisconsin, and traveled to Chicago to buy the car. It was delivered to Oconto by train where he gave it to his wife, Lucy. Holt donated it to the Oconto County Historical Society in 1948 and it was finally restored in 2014, where it is now on display at the Beyer Home & Carriage Museum in Oconto, Wisconsin. Very few Waverleys currently still exist.

1931 Detroit Electric Model 97 Shawn Dougan — St Louis, MO Engine: 84 volts Initially popular among urban socialites, Detroit Electric was a pioneer in the electric car market. This 1931 Model 97 coupe is a very rare late production model. Surprisingly, Detroit’s were built in small numbers until as late as 1939. The body style is essentially unchanged from the 1907 original, down to the unique cabin arrangement with tiller steering.

Classic Era Closed 1926 Kissel 8-75 Deluxe 4-Door Brougham

302

Wisconsin Automotive Museum — Hartford, WI Engine: Straight 8; 315 This car is a very correctly painted Kissel. The standard paint combination of a mid-1920s Kissel included a triple body stripe; wheels in an accent color, as well as a wheel stripe. This car has all of those features. 1926 marked the year Kissel introduced their “Cushioned in Rubber” concept. Rubber cushions were placed at motor mountings, springs, the gas tank and steering gear to reduce vibration and rattling.

Duree (Ray) LeClaire — Spring Grove, IL Engine: V8 - 331 c.i. 130 HP This 1940 Cadillac LaSalle was the last year the LaSalle was produced. Items specific to the 1940 model include, factory turn signals mounted on the top of the headlight fender. The headlights were incorporated into the fender (an Art-Deco look). It also came with a Cadillac hot water heater, Cadillac fog lamps and front grille guard, and stamped “LaSalle” rear bumper. It also retains the original 6 volt electrical system, which works perfectly. There were 1,525 coupes produced in 1940. It’s original sale price was $1,180. This car is also “running board delete”...in other words....no running boards, but rather 3 stainless steel strips in place of the running boards. It also still maintains an operable (most of the time) vacuum antenna.

An Art Deco tour de force.

1930 Packard 745 Deluxe Roadster

306

Tim Wiggins — Aurora, IL Engine: Straight 8, 384.8 cubic inches Many consider the Seven Series model 745 Deluxe Eight to represent the ultimate Packard from this period. Its long 12 foot wheelbase (145.5 inches) provided the ultimate platform to create some of the era’s finest designs. This 1930 Packard, formerly owned by Norman Deckard of Bloomington, Indiana, for over 50 years was completely dismantled to the very last nut and bolt, and then resurrected to the highest standards by the accomplished team at Tom Holley Restorations of Huntsville, Alabama.

While the interior looks new, the majority of it is still original having been protected from the sun by the early glass that turned yellow with age.

Classic Era Open 1931 Buick Model 94 Sports Roadster

402

Mark & Deb Zimmer — Howards Grove, WI Engine: Straight 8 344 CI The car is powered by a 344.8 cubic-inch inline eight-cylinder engine capable of producing just over 100 horsepower. There is a three-speed synchromesh sliding manual gearbox and four-wheel mechanical brakes. During Buick's early production years, they championed the belief of superior performance at an affordable price. Their overhead valve engine was powerful and durable; it powered Buicks for the first three decades of the twentieth century. By the early 1930s, the Buick Company shifted to an all-new straight eight to power its cars. The engineers felt that the six-cylinder engine had been engineered to its full potential, and its limits were reached. Over the years, its size had increased, performance enhanced, and its efficiency and smoothness expanded to its full potential. Entering the 1930s and with the mounting cylinder wars between marques, the decision to switch to an eight-cylinder engine was what the marketplace was seeking. The price tag of $1,300 was a steep price to pay for many people and ventured into Cadillac territory.

Designed and Crafted to your taste: The History of Early Coach Building Fisher Body started building custom carriages in 1800s Ohio, which is why their logo of an ornate wagon continued well into the 1960s. Fisher became part of GM in 1919 and later purchased Fleetwood, which had built custom bodies for some very high-end cars before finally becoming a name exclusive to Cadillac. As a logical progression from custom built carriages, the auto industry followed suit by offering unique stylish bodies, colors, and lavish interior trim. Custom coachwork was most popular from the start of the Classic Era (1915) through the early 1930s. During this time, one could order a complete running chassis from a luxury car manufacturer such as Rolls-Royce, Packard, Hispano, or Pierce-Arrow, then work with the sales agent on how to body and finish the car to personal taste. Premium car builders often offered new owners a line of standard bodies as well as custom bodies. Some of these custom bodies were produced by coach builders that included Dietrich, Hibbard & Darrin, Graber, LeBaron and Rollston, while some manufacturers—such as Duesenberg—did not make any bodies of their own. The individual who purchased such a car could work with the Duesenberg agent, selecting the custom body and builder, and on their own could work directly with any coach builder they desired.

All this custom work came at a hefty price, with many final products costing more than a nice home at the time. But for buyers who really wanted something special, a visit to the design studies of coach builders in the US or Europe guaranteed it. It was not uncommon to order both a summer and winter body for your car, and it was the responsibility of your chauffer, who cared for your cars, to seasonally change the body. A summer body would be an open top car with an all-weather interior to handle the elements, such as buffed leather, ostrich, alligator or another exotic hide. The winter body would be a closed style trimmed in fine cloth, with embroidery and elegant woodwork. Some extras even included mink lined foot warmers for the passengers! These early coach builders are the reason for the most flamboyant and elegant body designs penned from a blank sheet of paper. This year, several coach built cars will be on the display at the Milwaukee Concours, from elegant Rolls-Royces to racy Duesenbergs.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway — Indianapolis, IN Engine: 4 cyl/360 cu in The pair of 4-cylinder, 360-cubic-inch Duesenberg racing cars entered in the 1914 Indianapolis 500 by the German-born engineering brothers, Fred and Augie Duesenberg were basically the same cars they had developed in 1913 for the Mason Motor Company of Des Moines, IA. At the end of that year, the brothers had relocated to St. Paul, MN where they had formed the Duesenberg Motor Company, and after relocating again to Indianapolis in 1920/21, was to produce some of America’s most cherished classic passenger automobiles of the 1920s and 1930s. The emerging “star” driver of the 1914 Duesenberg team was 23-year-old Eddie Rickenbacker, who finished 10th at Indianapolis and won a 300-mile dirt track race at Sioux City, Iowa on July 4.

1923 Miller 122 HCS Special Race Car

608

Dana & Patti Mecum — Burlington, WI Engine: 122 cu in The Miller 122 Harry C. Stutz Special holds a unique place in the history of Harry Miller’s amazing automotive achievements. The Miller 122 HCS Special pioneered many “firsts” for Harry Miller’s legacy: the first 122 Miller built, the first Indianapolis 500 win for Harry Miller as a race-car builder, and Miller’s first Indy 500 record-setting pole. The HCS special also made Tommy Milton the first two-time Indy 500 winner. This car was also raced at the Indianapolis 500 in 1924 and 1925, finishing 10th and 14th, respectively.

1934 Gilmore Special Race Car Dana & Patti Mecum — Burlington, WI Engine: TBD The Gilmore Special was built by Myron Stevens for Art Sparks and Paul Weirick and raced from 1934-1948, making it perhaps the longest tenured racing car ever entered in the Indianapolis 500. In 1935 the Gilmore Special won the Pacific Coast AAA championship with Rex Mays. Mays then put the machine on the pole position for the 1935 and 1936 Indianapolis 500 races. This is essentially the last engine built by Harry Miller, one of four similar engines that formed the basis for the first Offenhauser engine in 1937.

Austin & Laura Schmitt — Hartland, WI Engine: 2000CC The story of this 1750 Spider Veloce Kamm tail is as much about the memories made with my family and friends as the car itself. Throughout the year, the car was re-build into a full vintage race car for E-production competition. A race prepped 1750cc, is currently being assembled and will soon replace the 2000cc motor currently under the bonnet, restoring it back and placing the car competitively into E-production

1968 LeGrand MK7 Race Car

Bob & Andree Mayer — Mt Prospect, IL Engine: 5 ltr/V-8 Designed by engineer/driver Bruce Eglinton and Red LeGrand, the MK7 was the first FA/5000 car designed by LeGrand Race Cars. Eglinton raced at the 1968 StardustGrand Prix. It would turn out to be a fruitful endeavor, with Eglinton winning, making it the first car to win a FA/5000 event in 1968. Sam Posey qualified first with the car at the 1968 Mosport Continental F5000 event, but withdrew after mechanical issues. Peter Revson was drafted into the team for Lime Rock, but was forced to withdraw. It was purchased by Bob Mayer in 1992 and thus began a four-year restoration. This car was rebuilt to its exact 1968 specifications as raced in Las Vegas.

1970 Plymouth Superbird Race Car Doug Schellinger — New Berlin, WI Engine: 426 hemi Ramo Stott’s #7 Plymouth Superbird competed in the NASCAR, USAC and ARCA stock car series. This is the first Superbird to win a race, the 1970 ARCA 300 at Daytona. Other major wins came at Talladega and Michigan Intl Speedway. Powered by a 426 Hemi engine, this car competed at the Milwaukee Mile finishing near the front several times.

Edsel - 60 years Following a year of the most outrageous publicity, including a one hour long TV special titled “The Edsel Show”, Ford’s futuristically styled Edsel was in show rooms in September 1957. Timing could not have been worse to launch a new Ford with the price tag of a Mercury simultaneously with dip in the economy. Styling was unique, but also very controversial. Four distinct models were offered with the Ranger, Pacer, Citation and Corsair; with multiple variations of each of those models. Edsel touted several features with warning lights and push button transmission, but in the end consumers did not warm up to the styling and production ended in three years. The result was a $250 million loss to Ford.

701

Today the distinctive styling allows us to quickly identify an Edsel as we celebrate the 60 year anniversary of this snapshot in American history.

1958 Edsel Pacer 2-Door Hardtop Mark Theisen — West Bend, WI Engine: V8/361 cu in I waited nearly 30 years to find a solid rust free Western United States Edsel and refreshed it to manufacturer standards with the exception of adding the Continental Kit and Fender Skirts to give it my own personal presentation. It is a fine example of a 1958 Edsel showing some of the various options that Ford had available for the car.

Muscle Cars 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe Brad Hammel — Greenfield, WI Engine: 396 cu in/375 hp This is an original SS396 car. In 1997 I dragged it out of a barn in very rough condition and it needed a complete restoration, including a replacement engine and transmission: both period correct.

Jack & Ann Bowser — Hawthorn Woods, IL Engine: 390 cu in/V8 The Bullet Birds (1961-1963) were probably the most beautiful Thunderbirds ever built. The disappearing top completely disappears into the trunk leaving the car completely streamlined when the top is down. The fiberglass tonneau cover was a nice option that covered the back-seat area making the car look even more streamlined and appearing to be a roadster. In a private collection for most of its life, this car has only 57,000 original miles.

1955 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible

1303

Qaisar Manzoor — Germantown, WI Engine: 248 cu in/Straight 8 It is beautifully restored by a gentleman in CA. BRONCOS In 1966 Ford dove into the fast-growing off-road vehicle market with their all-new utility vehicle, the Bronco. The Bronco was a clean sheet design and shared little with any other Ford product at the time. And it was equally unique in the marketplace. With its trim proportions, advanced coil spring front suspension, and available Wagon, Pickup, and Roadster body styles plus a myriad of factory options it was the first utility vehicle to truly offer the sportiness- a fact not overlooked in Ford’s marketing of the day. With its 92” wheelbase and a scant 34’ turning circle the original Bronco was an ideal off-road machine but these same attributes made it

just as entertaining on-road as well, not to mention exceptionally well-suited to snow plowing and other jobs. We’d also be remiss if we didn’t mention the great success that early Broncos found in off-road racing, conquering everything from the Mint 400 to the Baja 1000. But more importantly the early Bronco, produced from 1966-1977, has soul. We love them for their charm, their pluck, their ability to constantly punch above their weight and do it in a way that makes every minute behind the wheel fun. And that is why the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance is honored to present this class featuring some of our favorite examples of the iconic early Ford Bronco.

This “roadster” is special with many one year only attributes including hubcaps, bumpers, tailgate, silver upholstery, grey dash paint, etc. Very early roadsters were “Budd” bodied, sporting the “eyebrow” grille, transfer case shift levers topped with a patterned knob, front axle covers fitted with a square fill plug and forward-facing rear shock absorbers indicated further uniqueness. One of 4,090 roadsters produced for 1966.

Broncos continued 1969 Ford Boss Bronco Prototype SUV

EXHIBITION

ONLY

Colin Comer — River Hills, WI Engine: 351 CID V-8 In 1969 Ford was looking to create a production high performance Bronco. It quickly became the “BOSS BRONCO” project to fall in line with their new Boss brand. Ford’s skunk works Kar-Kraft would build the prototype. Bill Stroppe and Kar-Kraft engineers installed a fully blueprinted GT350 351W engine, a C4 automatic, 4.11:1 limited slip differentials on both ends, a roll bar, and numerous other high performance tricks. But in September 1969 Ford President “Bunkie” Knudsen, for whom the BOSS BRONCO prototype was built for and whose hands its fate rested in, was famously relieved of his duties at Ford.

1406

At that, the project was done. The BOSS BRONCO prototype, listed on Kar-Kraft’s 1969 inventory sheet as “Non-Resalable” went into storage, scheduled to be scrapped. But somehow the BOSS BRONCO escaped. Yet in 2016 the long-lost Boss was found by a Kar-Kraft historian. For 45 years none of its owners had any idea that it was one of the most significant Broncos of all time. More amazing is the fact that the BOSS BRONCO survived in remarkable unrestored condition.

Cana Comer — River Hills, WI Engine: 302 cu in The final-year early Broncos have many detail changes that make the 1977 model year trucks unique. This is a stock “uncut” base level example with factory power steering, brakes, and added air conditioning. It was purchased by its current owner in Phoenix Arizona 5 years ago and driven 2,400 miles home to Wisconsin utilizing Route 66 and secondary roads as much as possible. His name is Ralph. He is a Capricorn, likes unleaded fuel, long drives on the beach, and the occasional sip of 10w40 Valvoline.

1969 Ford Bronco Holman-Moody Bronco Hunter Chuck Wegner — River Hills, WI Engine: 302 cu in This was a specially built truck given by Ford to the legendary factorybacked race team duo of Holman-Moody and Bill Stroppe Inc. race teams to build into a very special street Bronco. It was assigned a H-M serial number which also included it’s name- the “Bronco Hunter.” This truck featured many items that would not be seen on a production bronco until the introduction of the Baja Bronco in 1971. The “Bronco Hunter” is a one-off truck and a very significant piece of Bronco history.

Speed – Then and Now Speed and racing certainly go back far beyond the first automobiles. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics depict chariots at speed. So it should be no surprise that speed became such an obsession with the first horseless carriages. Looking at the Stutz Bearcat on the lawn, it is hard to imagine that these cars were exceeding 100 mph when raced, but this performance won the 1913 and 1915 championships. Hanging out in the wind with no protection, this car was built for performance and nothing else. But performance pushes the technology envelope and this technology migrates to road cars to make them better; a trend that will continue. Although today many think of a Bentley only as a premier luxury car, these cars were originally known for their fantastic performance. Walter Bentley was a locomotive engineer and carried many of those design features into his engines giving them superior durability. The combination of durability and performance gave Bentley four consecutive Le Mans wins and many other racing successes. The 4.5 liter Vanden Plas Tourer at our Concours from the Stahl Collection personifies Bentley performance cars. Back in the US, Stutz was crowned fastest production car when they cracked 107mph in stock form at Daytona, then won every race in the AAA championship. But no collection of super cars is complete without a Duesenberg. The Duesenberg brothers started in racing and that lineage never left. The sinister look of the 1929 Murphy bodied convertible matches the performance of the mammoth twin overhead cam inline eight cylinder engine. This design of overhead cam inline eight cylinder engines was the epitome of performance and race cars from the late 1920s through the 1930s.

As we look to the future, Ford Motor Company sent us the new Ford GT on the lawn today with its look of a fighter jet. Again, designed purely for performance and sent to the race track. Just as Ford seized success at the great race tracks, so has Audi. In recent years, Audi has cumulated a total of 12 wins at Le Mans. We are thrilled to have such a race bread car as an R8 at the Concours. Read this, “1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi” and you will have just gone from 0 to 60 mph in the Porsche 918. Yes, it hits 60 mph in 2.2 seconds! The sound of the exhaust exiting behind your head is explosive. With a top speed well past 200 mph, this car stops so fast that it’s hard to believe the harness is actually going to hold you in the car. The exhibit today on the lawn specifically did not show a timeline of these super cars, but instead to highlight the contrast between the early days of speed and today. We hope you will enjoy comparing the technology of the two periods and imagine the exhilaration from these cars from the 1914 Bearcat to the 2017 Ford GT.

1602

Mike Kotecki — Brookfield, WI Engine: V10/525 hp/5.2 ltr If I was small enough to fit inside an HO scale slot car, it would feel EXACTLY like driving an AWD R8 Spyder. The car is oddly equipped with a premium stereo that is in perpetual envy of the orchestration from the 525 hp Lamborghini based V10. Sadly, 2011 was the last year for the gated manual shifter...that grows hair on your knuckles.

Hank Bernbaum — Lake Forest, IL Engine: 4.6Ltr/V8 + 2 electric motors 0 to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds and top speed of 218 mph could sum up this car. Upon its launch in 2013, the 918 shattered the record at the famed Nürburgring race circuit by 14 seconds. It was also the first street legal series production car to lap the ring in under seven minutes. The combination of its V8 engine and two supplemental electric motors provides the extreme power to launch this car with its carbon fiber the monocoque and subframe.

This car is equipped with the original Kissel “”Hollywood Option Package” which included Nickle bar-bumpers, luggage trunk, and dual spotlights and were originally sold in Hollywood, California to silent movie stars of the time. This is the actual Kissel pictured in Jay Leno’s book, “The Art of the Automobile - the 100 Greatest Cars”.

About the Artist It is my honor to have been chosen to be the 2017 Featured Artist of the Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance. I graduated from Iowa State University with a BA degree in Applied Art/ Advertising Design. Throughout my career as a graphic designer and art director, I have worked for a newspaper, design studio, hospital public relations department, advertising agency, and a print media consulting firm as well as doing freelance graphic design. But my true passion has always been fine art. I do commissioned acrylic paintings, typically of historic transportation, predominately focusing on cars. I not only like to paint vintage vehicles, I also like to live the experience, having a collection of Classic-era cars of my own. My husband, Thomas, a transportation historian/writer and collector of brass-era cars, and I have a hands-on relationship with vintage cars. We have hosted several day and three day tours for regional groups of the Classic Car Club of America, the Horseless Carriage Club of America and the Automobile Club of America. We have shown several of our cars here at the Concours over the years. It is also my pleasure to be the editor in chief and graphic designer of The Hub Cap, the award winning quarterly publication of the Wisconsin Region of the Classic Car Club of America. The Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance has been featured in it as recently as last year. My love of vintage transportation includes motorcars, WWII Warbirds, steam trains, and antique bicycles. It has been a thrill to have been the ‘riding mechanic’ in early teen race cars at the Milwaukee Mile, have ‘left seat’ time in a B-17, helped fire a steam locomotive, and have many miles riding an original 1880’s high wheel bicycle. Using my real-life experiences allows me to concentrate on detail and strive to be as historically accurate as possible. Please stop by my art exhibit on display in the Concours Village. The theme of this year’s commemorative poster is ‘Speed...then and now’ and depicts a 1914 Stutz Bearcat and a 2017 Ford GT, both on the show field Sunday, August 6th. I was asked to paint the cars with one of the area’s gems, the famous Milwaukee Mile, choosing circa 1910 as the setting. The Milwaukee Mile has a rich and fascinating past. It was first used for harness horse racing and then also became popular for bicycle and then motorcycle racing in the late 1880’s to early 1900’s. The first automobile race was in 1903 and it now has the distinction of being the longest running speedway in the world. In researching the history and photos of the racetrack, I discovered that, surprisingly, the dirt track actually had a picket fence in its early days! Joyce S. Edfors
