D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S It has been hard to contain the enthusiasm that we have felt in anticipation of this amazing collaboration between Milwaukee Chamber Theatre and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The synergy between the professional cast and the student actors is wonderful and this has been a great and creative learning opportunity for all of us who are involved. Thanks to Michael Wright and the MCT staff for inviting us in! BUS STOP is a wonderful comedy with moments that make us smile and others that make us laugh out loud. At the same time, this is a serious comedy, and the themes that hold the play together are not about the extremes of human nature and behavior, but rather about those things that bring us together and, ultimately, keep us apart. Bluster, heartache, and laughter are all part of the world that is created this one night, in this small Kansas town. Through these relatively innocent characters, we see a reflection of a world that can be very harsh, cold, and lonely, but one that has moments of laughter and joy as well. The play takes place in 1955. While times have certainly changed, human nature has not. If we were caught in this snowstorm today, I’m sure we’d be pulling out our cell phones, laptops, and iPads to pass the time! Technology has certainly changed the way that we interact with one another, but the isolation and loneliness that these characters feel is easily reflected in our current means of communication. The search for love and meaningful connection are part of the journey that we all take. They are part of the human condition, and William Inge writes about those needs with great tenderness and compassion. At the same time, he lets us laugh at ourselves as we recognize the universality of these characters, and the many quirks of human behavior. I think that BUS STOP continues to speak to us today, and it is no surprise that there have recently been numerous productions across the country.

Sunday, April 22 8:00 p.m. WPR & MCT present Old Time Radio Drama Live, featuring two stage performances, “The Lonely Road” and “The Rocket from Manhattan.”

LIVE BROADCAST from the Cabot Theatre!

The terrific set, designed by my colleague Keith Harris, is a great reflection of the world that Inge paints. The warmth of the lights separating the diner from the oppressive snow above is a mirror of this night in Grace’s diner. It is cold and windy outside and everyone is ‘stuck’ for a time. Inside, however, there is warmth and food and there are people with whom to pass the time. The storm ends and the bus moves on. Life goes on. We hope you’ll enjoy your time in Grace’s Diner! ~Lisa Kornetsky

ABOUT THE PL AY WRIGHT WILLIAM INGE Born on May 3, 1913, in Independence, Kansas, William Motter Inge was the youngest of five children. Inge was educated at the University of Kansas at Lawrence where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in speech and drama in 1935. He earned a Master of Arts degree from the George Peabody College for Teachers in 1943. Inge then moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he landed a job as the drama and music critic for the St. Louis Times. When working at the paper he met Tennessee Williams, who invited the young critic to attend a production of THE GLASS MENAGERIE. Inge was so inspired by Williams’ play that he decided to try his hand as a playwright. After completing his first script, FARTHER OFF FROM HEAVEN (1947), Inge sent a copy to Williams who recommended it for production. The play was produced in Dallas, Texas. Inge’s next literary effort, COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA (1950) earned him the title of “most promising playwright of the 1950 Broadway season,” but his career was only beginning to gain momentum as he had three more successive Broadway triumphs. PICNIC (1953) won him a Pulitzer Prize, the Drama Critics Circle Award, the Outer Circle Award, and the Theatre Club Award. Next came BUS STOP (1955) and THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS (1957), a reworking of his first play. A film adaptation of BUS STOP was released in 1956 directed by Joshua Logan and starring Marilyn Monroe, Don Murray, Arthur O’Connell and Betty Field. After four Broadway hits, critics were hailing Inge as another Tennessee Williams. Unfortunately, his later works would not fulfill that promise. THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS was followed by a string of box office failures including A LOSS OF ROSES (1960), NATURAL AFFECTION (1963), WHERE’S DADDY? (1966) and THE LAST PAD (1970). Inge’s only real success during this period was his screenplay for Splendor in the Grass (1961) for which he won an Academy Award. Convinced that he could no longer write, Inge fell into a deep depression, and on June 10, 1973, at his home in the Hollywood Hills, William Inge took his own life.
