PRODUCTION NOTES On a cold Tuesday afternoon in December of 1956, four of the greatest musical innovators of the time, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, united at Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee for a somewhat accidental gathering.

These renowned revolutionaries spontaneously created a collection of music deemed so original; there was hardly a classification for what transpired. Word leaked of this impromptu jam session, in which the boys were dubbed the Million Dollar Quartet, and history was made. The foursome never reunited again.

Leading up to that fateful night, Cash, Perkins, and Presley’s careers had already skyrocketed. Once touring partners and friends, their paths bisected by chance that night, while Jerry Lee Lewis was the new kid in town. There was one man in all their lives who perhaps was the unsung hero, the man who nurtured the genius in each of them: the “Father of rock’n’roll” and Sun Records owner, Sam Phillips.

Unlike other producers of the time, Phillips took an active role in the recording process, encouraging and coaxing the artists to generate a sound from the depths of their capabilities. Even under scrutiny from the public, Phillips urged his artists to disregard the temptation to adopt the mainstream tactics of other contemporaries, despite the lure of success. In his rudimentary, one room studio, Phillips sparked innovation and launched careers, including those of B.B. King, Roy Orbison and Ike Turner, in addition to the four artists included in the Million Dollar Quartet.

Phillips often found himself deserted by his aspiring young talents as they sought big paychecks and star reputations that Sun Records simply could not deliver. Lost in the spotlight of stardom, Cash, Perkins and Presley, among others, moved on in their ambition for fame. Only later on in their careers did they come to fully appreciate the contribution made by Phillips, in his constant respect and fostering of artistic imagination and individuality. Jerry Lee Lewis was the only member of the Million Dollar Quartet to remain loyal to Sun Records, until 1963. He moved to Mercury Records and experienced a career rebirth as a country artist starting in 1968. Yet, no matter what path to success his artists traveled along in pursuit of their careers, the spirit of Phillips and his vision live on in the music each of them created.

BIOGRAPHIES (IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE) GABE BOWLING (Carl Perkins) has been a professional actor for eight years with a career that’s landed him in both Chicago and Los Angeles.

Until now he has mostly focused on film and commercials.

Originally a Wisconsin native, he has toured nationally in multiple bands throughout his life and is currently the lead guitar player for the rock band Fat J and The Pinners. He is also the brains behind all of the instrumentation and songwriting in his side project Gabe vs.

The Sad Kids.

SEAN SULLIVAN (Johnny Cash) hails from Ohio and has lived and worked in Chicago since 2002. He’s an ensemble member with BackStage

Theatre Co. As an actor and designer he’s performed with Timeline Theatre Company in Fiorello! as Floyd and The Children’s Hour as Joe; with Lifeline Theatre as M’Ling in The Island of Dr. Moreau; and most recently, Sean was nominated for a Jeff Award for Best Actor in a Principle Role with Shattered Globe Theatre in Requiem for a Heavyweight. He wants to thank his family and friends, his parents Mike and Susan and his best friend and wife, Megan.

LANCE LIPINSKY (Jerry Lee Lewis) While other kids were doing their homework, Lance was studying his dad’s record collection of people like Elvis, Roy Orbison, and his hero, Jerry Lee Lewis. These strong convictions for the past consumed his lifestyle and dedicated his career to Million Dollar Quartet 3

the modern underground Rockabilly movement. Now at age 24, this Texas native combines these styles in his own original music similar to early rock ‘n’ roll, classic country and even a touch of 1960’s pop. His energetic live shows have led him all over the world, even to making his national television debut at the original Ryman Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. BRANDON BENNETT (Elvis Presley), a native son of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, began his singing career as a small boy, influenced mainly by his greatgrandfather. His talent, along with his natural resemblance to The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, has enabled him to perform with legendary stars like The Jordanaires, DJ Fontana, The Sweet Inspirations, and more. Brandon has been honored with several international awards, including prestigious honors from Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. DAN LEALI (Fluke/Drummer) A native of the Chicago aea, Dan has performed live or on recordings with such artists as jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker, songwriters Jewel, Liz Phair, Peter Himmelman and Robbie Fulks, Poi Dog Pondering, Fareed Haque, bluesman John Primer, and Liquid Soul. He has performed on television and radio jingles, as well as arcade and video game soundtracks, and maintains a private teaching practice.

is also a founding member of the band Tributosaurus, currently celebrating its 10th year as the “Civil War Re-Creationists of Rock and Roll.” He would like to thank his family and close friends for their love and support, especially Kim, and is proud to be a new member of the MDQ family!

BRAD BER (Jay Perkins, Bass player) For the past decade Brad has been a professional upright bass player specializing in rockabilly, blues and American roots music.

After a semester studying music business at Columbia College, Brad left to join the music business as a performer. He has been honored to play alongside a wide array of artists, from original Sun artists to exciting new national acts. He has worn many hats, from recording artist and performer to songwriter and recording engineer. He credits his spirituality as a primary influence to his performing and creativity, and is honored for the opportunity to play with this exciting company.

TIM DECKER (Sam Phillips) Tim could not be more excited to be a part of this amazingly talented cast and hopes his work honors the legacy of this music that his father introduced to him. He is a long time Chicago actor with local and regional credits that include roles at Chicago Shakespeare, Goodman, Next, Milwaukee Rep, Touchstone, Shattered Globe, Stage Left, Blind Parrot, Famous Door, Bailiwick, Noble Fool, American Theatre Company, and American Blues where he received a Principal Actor Jeff for his work in Toys in the Attic. Tim also works in film and TV where he has had recurring roles in ABC’s Cupid and Turks on CBS as well as The Untouchables. Film credits include work in Charming Billy, Dirty Work, Joshua, and a leading role in the recently wrapped

Indie film Ash which will premiere this fall. Tim has also paid a lot of bills over the years landing voiceover work for tv and radio. Far and away, his proudest accomplishment is his family who he thanks for their support.

HEATHER MARIE MARSDEN (Dyanne) Originally from the Detroit area, HMM is thrilled to be making her Chicago debut in MDQ. COLTE JULIAN (U/S Jerry Lee Lewis) is excited to be joining such an amazing production. This music has been coursing through his veins since he was a little guy growing up on the farm in Oklahoma. He started playing piano at 9 after hearing his Pawpaw’s Jerry Lee Lewis records. He then continued with music to graduate with degrees from Oklahoma State University and Arizona State University. Following a move to NYC, Colte has traveled across the country and high seas as an actor, singer, and pianist. BIOGRAPHIES DARCY WOOD (U/S Dyanne) Darcy Wood is thrilled to be joining the talented cast and crew of Million Dollar Quartet.

Originally an Orlando native, Darcy made her Chicago debut in 2008 upon graduating with her B.A in Acting at Seton Hill University. Some of her favorite Regional credits include: High School Musical (U.S./Perf. Gabriella) at Drury Lane Oakbrook, Taffetas (U.S./ Perf. Kaye & Donna) at Nobel Fools Theatricals, Tommy (Sally Simpson) at Circle Theatre and Girls vs. Boys (original workshop cast member) at The House Theatre. Check out some of her music at www.trevorreusch.com COLIN ESCOTT (Co-Book Author) left university in England in 1970, and while most of his friends went to Katmandu or off to work with the poor and disenfranchised, Colin went to Memphis in search of the shaking music. Later, he wrote the book Good Rockin’ Tonight— Sun Records and the Birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll, upon which Million Dollar Quartet is loosely based. He also co-produced and co-wrote Hank Williams—Honky Tonk Blues for PBS and BBC and wrote the definitive biography of Williams.

Currently living in rural Tennessee, he is a consultant to Time Life Music.

FLOYD MUTRUX (Co-Book Author, Co-Director) has written, directed or produced 50 films including American Hot Wax (Village Voice Best Picture-Best Director), Urban Cowboy, Up in Smoke, Hollywood Knights, Aloha Bobby & Rose, The Untouchables, as well as the Emmywinning “Drug Wars,” “American Me” and “Dick Tracy” at Disney, where he co-wrote Ice Cube’s new football movie.

He is currently working on four movies including Dancing with Myself for John Travolta, and a number of rock’n’roll 6 Million Dollar Quartet

CHUCK MEAD (Musical Arranger) For the past ten years, singer/ songwriter/ guitarist Chuck Mead has stood at the forefront of the alternative country explosion as co-founder and leader of Country Music Association Award winning and three-time Grammy Award™ nominee BR549. The band has appeared on “Good Morning America,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” MTV, VH1 and the BBC. After releasing six critically acclaimed albums, two hit EPs and producing two successful tribute records (Dressed in Black: A Tribute to Johnny Cash and

ETHAN DEPPE (Musical Coordinator) Ethan Deppe is a composer, music director and instrumentalist based in Chicago. Composing credits include music written for Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Slant Theatre Project, and Theo Ubique as well as the short film The Meaning of Hemingway and 4 original musicals. Ethan also composes for 4 Elements Music, a New York City based composing house that produces music for television and film. A Jeff nominated music director and instrumentalist, Ethan’s work has been heard in theatres in and around Chicago including Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Drury Lane, Theatre at the Center, Next Theatre, Noble Fool, American Theater Company, Stage 773, Bailiwick, Apple Tree and Theo Ubique.

KEITH PARHAM (Lighting Designer) is a company member of TUTA Theatre, where recent credits include Uncle Vanya, It’s Only the End of the World, Tracks, Huddersfield, Still Life in Color and Rules for Good Manners in the Modern World (Chicago and NY). Other credits include Gas for Less at Goodman, 9 Parts of Desire and The Adding Machine at Next Theatre (Associate Artist) and Adding Machine: A Musical off-Broadway. He has also designed numerous shows for companies including Writers’ Theatre, Northlight Theater, Timeline Theatre (Associate Artist) Lookingglass Theatre Company, Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, European Repertory Theatre, Rivendell Theatre Ensemble and Theatre Wit. CARYN KLEIN (Costume Designer) has had the pleasure of being part of the costume community in Chicago for 25 years. Caryn’s designs have been seen on the stages of Apple Tree Theater, Oak Park Shakespeare Festival, Drury Lane Oakbrook and Martinique Theaters, Victory Gardens and Candlelight Dinner Playhouse. She has designed costumes for commercial productions of Bleacher Bums and the premier of Transference.

Caryn founded Costume Exchange Inc. in 1994, a center for the creation and construction of high quality costumes for theater, dance and opera. In 2001 Costume Exchange and Steppenwolf Theatre merged. Caryn is now the costume director for Steppenwolf and manages the Steppenwolf Theatre costume shop and is honored to build costumes for other Chicago companies including Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Court Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Hubbard Street Dance Co., Lookingglass Theatre, Chicago Opera Theater and The Lyric Opera.

BIOGRAPHIES KAI HARADA (Sound Designer) attended Yale University for two years before leaving to pursue a career in theatrical sound design. As associate to sound designer Tony Meola, he has worked on such projects as A Christmas Carol; The Sound of Music; Disney’s Der Glöckner von Notre Dame; Kiss Me, Kate; Sweet Smell of Success and Wicked.

He is also the Sound Supervisor for Wicked worldwide. Regional and off-Broadway designs include Norman’s Ark, A Tale of Two Cities, Heaven Help Us!, Under the Bridge and Barbie™ Live! in Fairytopia™.

BRIGITTE MUTRUX (Original Movement Coordinator) grew up in Oslo, Norway, and studied dance and theater there and at Cambridge. She ended up in Los Angeles where she studied theater, married Floyd and had two girls, Stella and Chaia. She acted as movement coordinator for Million Dollar Quartet at the Seaside Music Theater in Florida and at the Village Theatre in Washington. She most recently choreographed Baby It’s You, the Shirelles bio in Los Angeles. She has designed a new MOBIL clothing concept, written a new film noir, Stella by Starlight, and is co-writing the book for a musical play entitled Someday My Prince Will Come.

Other credits from Maggie’s 20 years in Chicago include James Lapine’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Bob Falls’ production of Frank’s Home at the Goodman Theatre starring Peter Weller, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Chicago Theatre with Donny Osmond, Sons of Don Juan with Robert Cuccioli at San Jose Repertory Theatre, A Streetcar Named Desire at Steppenwolf Theatre with Gary Sinise and Rehearsal for the Apocalypse at Remains Theatre with the late Del Close. Maggie also served as resident stage manager at Court Theatre and Northlight Theatre.

MATT MARSDEN (Production Manager) is production manager for Eighty-Eight Entertainment, the company that brings Beethoven, As I Knew Him, Monsieur Chopin, and George Gershwin Alone to stages around the globe. Matt is also the production manager at the Royal George Theatre in Chicago where he has been part of the teams for HATS! The Musical; Forbidden Broadway: SVU; and I Love You,You’re Perfect, Now Change. Matt has also worked for Olympic City at the 1996 Olympic Games; as a project manager for Becker Studios, Inc., and worked to open Chicago’s Drury Lane Theatre (at Water Tower Place) on their inaugural shows The Full Monty and Mornings at Seven. BIOGRAPHIES ALAN WASSER ASSOCIATES (General Management), under the leadership of Alan Wasser and Allan Williams, oversee and supervise The Phantom of the Opera and Oleanna on Broadway, Phantom on tour and in Las Vegas, and A Chorus Line, Dreamgirls, and Walking With Dinosaurs on tour. Future Broadway productions include Spider-Man, The Miracle Worker, Million Dollar Quartet, Promises Promises, and The Nutty Professor. Wasser and Williams are also general managers of the annual Tony Awards® ceremony, broadcast nationally on the CBS television network.

MARCIE ROMAN (Company Manager) is thrilled to be working with the amazingly talented group of theater artists on Million Dollar Quartet. A graduate of Northwestern University, she spent many years working in the trenches on film and television productions, including My Best Friend’s Wedding, Early Edition, Return to Me, and Green Street Hooligans. Love to her family and XO to her two little rock and rollers, Abby and Ben. RELEVANT THEATRICALS (Producer) is a commercial production company headed by Gigi Pritzker and Ted Rawlins, dedicated to developing new work for the stage. Current projects include: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which premiered at the Guthrie Theatre and is on course to open in London next year; Snapshots, a new musical with book

by David Stern and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz; and a new musical version of Dennis The Menace. Relevant’s sister company, Odd Lot Entertainment, develops and produces outstanding new film properties. Current productions include the feature “Rabbit Hole,” based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Lindsay-Abaire, starring Nicole Kidman and Dianne Wiest, and directed by John Cameron Mitchell. JOHN COSSETTE PRODUCTIONS (Producer) was founded by John Cossette whose 30 year career in the music industry as an innovative producer of large scale events was legendary. John produced the Grammy’s, the BET awards, the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and a star studded concert in Central Park. He was deeply involved with MusiCares and the EJ Jackson Foundation which helps to feed the homeless in Los Angeles.

Under the direction of Rita Cossette the company will continue to develop and produce music related entertainment.

The Buddy Holly Story, Robert Dubac’s long-running one man show The Male Intellect: an oxymoron?, Neil Simon’s timeless classic The Odd Couple (Female Version) starring Barbara Eden and Rita McKenzie, Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues, and a three and a half year run of Menopause the Musical. The Apollo is also home to the Emerald City Theatre Company, Chicago’s only theatre solely dedicated to family shows; as well as Baby Wants Candy, Chicago’s original improv musical.
