the Glitz to Support the Arts by Chris Sharrow

This fall, hundreds of people will be sitting along runways breathless with anticipation. Hundreds of others will be working feverishly behind the scenes. Pulsating music will start and everyone’s inner fashionista will revel in the latest fashion trends. It’s time for the annual fashion shows in Milwaukee. And it’s all in the name of raising funds to support the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) and the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts. The Symphony Style Show started in 1964 as a tea and fashion show to increase membership in the MSO League and after 44 years, this friendly little gathering has evolved into a premier event and major fundraiser for the MSO. Now in its eighth year, the Wilson Center’s annual fashion show and luncheon attracts over 500 guests from across the Milwaukee metro area. Russell Levin and Tony Chakonas are two of the people who help plan these glamorous events and, of course, they don’t plan them alone and everyone volunteers their time. Tony Chakonas, who has co-chaired the Symphony Style Show fundraiser for five years, shares planning duties with Cynthia Stoll, Jordan DeChambre and Kyle Cherek. Because the show is such a huge event, the committee never stops planning. “Symphony Style is an event that requires constant attention and planning year-round. It is a monstrously logistical undertaking. We are typically seeking out the following year’s featured designer before the current year’s event has even taken place,” Chakonas said. So how does the committee choose the designer whose work is featured? “We begin by working with our presenting retailer to determine our various options. Once we’ve narrowed down the field, we view the remaining lines during Fashion Week in New York. With the consensus of the committee, we begin negotiations with the various design houses to determine our featured Symphony Style designer,” Chakonas explained. “The shows at Bryant Park in September will give us the direction necessary. We stay very true to the Bryant Park Fashion Week experience.” (Bryant Park in New York City was the site of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week from September 5-12, 2008).

Who is the featured designer and presenting retailer this year? “Peggy Jennings Spring ‘09 Collection presented by Au Courant,” Chakonas revealed. “She’s been in business for 27 years and her only promotion is word of mouth. She designs for the First Lady. We are incredibly excited to be featuring a designer at the top of her field, but whose name is familiar to so few. It’s as if we’re revealing a huge secret.” This year’s Symphony Style Show is at the Milwaukee Art Museum on November 14, so there’s still time to reserve seats. The Wilson Center Fashion Show is planned with a closer-to-home fashion flair, calling on local fashion shops to show the latest fashions from their store’s featured designers. Russell Levin is co-owner of the Picardy Shoe Parlour and has been the volunteer producer of the Wilson Center Fashion Show for three years. The chair of this year’s event is Deneen Abezetian. The show is scheduled for October 8 and at this writing, is almost sold out. Working with an Oscar® awards theme of Lights! Glamour! Fashion!, the Wilson Center Fashion Show committee will decorate the Kuttemperoor Auditorium with 12-foot statues in the image of Oscar. “The Wilson Center’s logo happens to be a woman on a trophy, very similar to an Oscar. So we’re having the Wilson Center’s image made into these statues to flank the stage. The front of the runway will be decorated with red roses. We’re using a large-screen video to project the show live,“ Levin said. Levin and his committee have recruited over 90 local models to walk the runway. “They really have a good time. It’s an easy show to do and they have fun with it,” Levin said. This year, the featured stores are Andre Furs, GIGI of Mequon, m.e. Lou, Picardy Shoe Parlour, Suiters and Zita. Featuring local shops has an added benefit for the people who come to see the show. “We have stores that have a lot of depth to them. They’ll be showing dressy to casual styles. Each store is allotted 15 outfits and there are no changes allowed. Because we’re featuring a

2007 Sharon Lynne Wilson Center Fashion Show

model for each outfit, this guarantees a smooth-flowing show. The clothing is affordable and available for all different body types and sizes. By doing the short videos to introduce the stores, we give the potential client an opportunity to be a little more comfortable visiting the stores and give the audience an opportunity to choose the style of clothes they may be interested in,” Levin said. By the time you read this, the show may be over, and you may be sorry you missed it. The Wilson Center Fashion Show is always scheduled in October so you may want to make a note to attend next year. With all this mingling of fashion and fundraising, the bottom line is – it’s time to buy some new clothes! Next time you have tickets to the theater, treat yourself to a little shopping trip. Pick out something that makes you look and feel great, and if shopping isn’t your “bag,” ask the salespeople for suggestions or make an appointment with a personal shopper and they’ll have clothes picked out in your size, style, or favorite color waiting for you to try on. Many stores offer personal shoppers now and they don’t cost you a thing. Attending a performance is always an invitation to dress up a little and strut your stuff. So, give in to your inner fashionista and get thee to your shopping spree. ■ The Milwaukee Symphony Style Fashion Show Gala is a benefit of the Evening Associates of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra League. Contact the MSO League office at 414-226-7852 to make reservations with your Mastercard® or VISA®. Contact Kara Roeming at 262-373-5029 to reserve seats for the Wilson Center Fashion Show.

Renaissance Theaterworks presents the oldest surviving play in western literature, THE PERSIANS, a moving elegy for a fallen civilization. The author, Aeschylus, is a Greek veteran of the Persian Wars and unconventionally sets the play at the enemy court, where the Persian queen and cabinet await the first reports of the unimaginable defeat of the Great Persian Army. This new adaptation by Ellen McLaughlin and directed by Angela Iannone, is presented from October 10 through November 2 at the Studio Theatre in the Broadway Theatre Center. For tickets call 414-291-7800 or visit r-t-w.com.

Pulitzer Prize nominee Sarah Ruhl (THE CLEAN HOUSE) returns with a haunting new play that explores the pain of love, loss and memories. EURYDICE is a contemporary re-telling of the myth of Orpheus’ descent into the underworld. In this inventive and lyrical play, Eurydice must decide how long to cling to the memories of her life and loves on earth. EURYDICE is presented by the Milwaukee Repertory Theater in the Quadracci Powerhouse from October 28 through November 23. For tickets, call 414-224-9490 or visit milwaukeerep.com.

The Sunset Playhouse presents ESCANABA IN DA MOONLIGHT, a “very deer” comedy by Jeff Daniels. When the Soady clan reunites for the opening day of deer season at the family’s U.P. camp, Reuben Soady has the infamous reputation of being the oldest family member never to bag a buck. In a hunting story to beat all hunting stories, ESCANABA spins a tale of hilarity and heart as Reuben goes to extreme and nontraditional lengths to remove himself from the wrong end of the family record book. Presented October 17November 8. For tickets call 262-782-4430 or visit sunsetplayhouse.com.

Frank Almond will be playing the legendary Lipinski Stradivarius violin, built in 1715, worth over $3 million and played by some of the greatest violinists in history when Frankly Music presents MESSIAEN: QUARTET FOR THE END OF TIME on November 3 and 4 at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Performing with Almond are Todd Levy, clarinet; Darrett Adkins, cello; and Gloria Cheng, piano. Messiaen’s masterpiece, conceived and composed during the composer’s captivity in World War II, remains one of the most powerful and moving works of the 20th century. For tickets call 414-443-8802 or visit franklymusic.org

Hot young choreographer Trey McIntyre has been praised by The New York Times as “one of ballet’s most surprising talents” and one of “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine. The Boston Globe writes: “For a ballet lover in the 21st century, it is thrilling to see the art form in the hands of a skilled choreographer who can mine the traditional vocabulary for all it’s worth while imaginatively stretching its boundaries.” TREY MCINTYRE PROJECT performs at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center in the Kuttemperoor Auditorium on November 1 at 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. For tickets call 262-781-9520 or visit wilson-center.com.

When was the last time you heard a voice that flies through jazz, cantorial chant and the avant garde? On November 15, Alverno Presents features Israeli singer/composer AYELET ROSE GOTTLIEB performing “Mayim Rabim,” her song cycle composed to texts from the erotic biblical poem, “Song of Songs.” Her performance juxtaposes formal elegance against raw sensuality and her thrilling use of Middle Eastern music as a source material for the largely western tradition of jazz boldly leads us into the 21st Century. The Milwaukee Chamber Theatre presents a true Milwaukee story, THE DALY NEWS, a new musical by well-known Milwaukee actor and playwright, Jonathan Gillard Daly. He takes us back to 1940s Milwaukee for a heart-warming story about his grandfather, Martin, who created a newsletter he called “The Daly News” to keep his four sons connected to the family while World War II forced Jonathan Gillard Daly Photo by Tom Fritz Studios, Inc. them apart. This touching musical memoir about love and the distance between fathers and sons will be presented in the Studio Theatre in the Broadway Theatre Center from November 13 through December 14. For tickets call 414-291-7800 or visit chamber-theatre.com.

Milwaukee Ballet Presents THE SLEEPING BEAUTY by Jim Cryns There are many reasons to get excited about Tchaikovsky’s THE SLEEPING BEAUTY—it’s rich tradition of spectacle, dazzling scenery and big-budget aura. Another reason to anticipate Milwaukee Ballet Company’s interpretation is Artistic Director Michael Pink’s somewhat iconoclastic, daring and refreshing presentation of THE SLEEPING BEAUTY as a ballet as opposed to a Las Vegas show. Temptation to produce a Disney-esque version is shared by artistic directors around the world. Pink will break this work of art down to the things that work, the common elements of efficient dance.

Next Act Theatre presents a killer of a comedy, Jeffrey Hatcher’s deliciouslydark, clever and charming MURDERERS. Based upon Hatcher’s highly successful THREE VIEWINGS, each of three characters tells an intertwined story of mystery and intrigue. The story takes place in the aptly-named Riddle Key Retirement Community where Gerald marries his girlfriend’s mom; Minka is out to avenge wrongdoing; and Lucille tries to protect her foolish husband from the heat of an old flame. Three very different people with something in common – murder. Running November 13 through December 14 at the Off-Broadway Theatre. For tickets call 414-278-0765 or visit nextact.org.
