A NOTE FROM THE PL AY WRIGHT

There’s something about the show-biz tradition that Caroline O’Connor personifies that I find thrilling. Perhaps coming from a straight dramatic background, the world of singing, dancing and physical comedy seems so pure and exuberant. In an era in which so much drama is or aims to be thoughtprovoking and intense, my own included, it’s such a pleasure to work with someone for whom the concept of entertainment is so straight-forward and immediate. You always read in those old showbiz biographies of performers who “light up a room” – that’s Caroline. When I was commissioned to write a show specifically for Caroline, I didn’t know her personally. I spent a day with her and felt, even off the stage, that this woman had a particular life-force. She was inspiring Caroline O’Connor in THE SHOWGIRL WITHIN. as both a woman and a performer Photo by piranaphotography.com. and as BOMBSHELLS continues on, across the world from Melbourne, Australia to the West End and beyond, my admiration for her continues to grow. The pleasure of a collaboration is in allowing the two parties involved to extend the skills of the other. In BOMBSHELLS, I feel as if I’ve written something that allows Caroline to shine in a particular way. The show has stretched her already formidable talents and allowed her to reveal to us not only the skills she has long been celebrated for, but deeper theatrical skills. Similarly, her joie de vivre and comedic quick-wittedness created a new adventure for me in terms of my writing. Between the two of us, I think that we have switched on a few lights in the other, illuminating aspects of our creative life that had hitherto stayed in the shadows. Somewhat unfortunately, writing about women in states of extreme emotional collapse comes naturally to me! I was shocked by how easily I met the brief! I love the idea of the calm exterior of women’s public lives contrasting so vividly with their besieged inner lives. The most ordinary women live within wildly volatile territories: erotic, fearful, desperate, cunning. . . . The trick, it seemed to me, was to lead an audience down there, beneath the pedestrian surfaces to the wilderness of the feminine spirit. I could not be happier to see the American premiere of BOMBSHELLS at Milwaukee Rep, under the inspired direction of Mark Clements. Joanna Murray-Smith Playwright
