Celebrating Women Artists March 8 is International Women’s Day, and appropriately enough it lands 19 days before World Theatre Day (March 27). We definitely advocate supporting the arts, regardless of gender! However, in a world where male actors, playwrights, and directors dominate the performing arts world, we thought we would shed a special spotlight on the amazing women that play just as an important role-both on stage and off.

REMEMBERING LORRAINE HANSBERRY (May 19, 1930-January 12, 1965)

45 years after her death, playwright Lorraine Hansberry still inspires young women and African-American playwrights with her unique legacy. Here are some quick facts about the awardwinning playwright.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hansberry’s best-known work, A Raisin in the Sun, became the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway. At 29-years-old, Hansberry was the youngest American and only the fifth woman to win a New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play in 1959. Hansberry died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 34, the same night her production, The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, closed after its 101 performance run on Broadway. Hansberry attended the University of Wisconsin for two years and then went on to be a journalist and associate editor for Paul Robeson’s progressive newspaper Freedom. To learn more about Lorraine Hansberry, visit Footlights.com!

“The cool thing is that, unlike film, the theatre roles for women get better and better as you get older.” - Idina Menzel, Broadway World Interview in 2013 Issue #3

BARN DOORS

In this instance, barn doors do not refer to the entrance of the building on the family homestead in the country. In this case, barn doors are an element of stage lighting. The barn doors are an attachment of four leaves on a stage lantern that assist with shaping the beam of light that falls on the stage.

“Your barn doors are open,” takes on a whole new meaning! 12
