Before coming to Milwaukee, Subbaraman, 35, was the Artistic Director and Founder of Opera Vista, a contemporary opera company in Houston. While at Opera Vista, he became known for staging premieres and encouraging the creation of new operas. The Houston Press named him one of the 100 Most Creative People for 2012.

Prior to his tenure at Opera Vista, Subbaraman was the Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre National de France under Conductor Kurt Masur and worked with renowned guest conductors including Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Muti, and Sir Colin Davis. He has guest conducted with various orchestras in Bonn, Germany, Washington D.C., and Bombay, India. Raised in West Texas and the son of Indian immigrants, Subbaraman originally planned to become a doctor like his father and grandfather. While a biology student at Duke University, he developed a deeper interest in music, playing for the university marching band and eventually traveling abroad to expand his musical knowledge and skill. After graduating from Duke with a dual degree in biology and music, he worked as assistant to William Henry Curry, Resident Conductor of the North Carolina Symphony. Cont’d pg. 26

Upon completion of his master’s degree from Texas Tech University, he was awarded a Fulbright Grant to study conducting with John Nelson in Paris where he also worked as the Visiting Assistant Conductor of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris. Two months after arriving in Paris, Subbaraman was offered a post by Maestro Masur with the Orchestre National de France. Upon completion of his Fulbright year, Subbaraman received the first extension of a Fulbright grant ever issued by the French Fulbright Commission. While working with Opera Vista, Subbaraman earned an MBA from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. In his rare moments of free time, Subbaraman is a hardcore sports fan, he loves to travel and cook, and he speaks five languages – English, French, German, Italian and Tamil.

‘Tis the season... The holiday season is upon us and this time of year offers holidaythemed shows that range from traditional to the wacky – and everything in-between.

as much a part of the experience as the charming show on stage. “A Christmas Carol” is filled with traditional carols and the timeless The Milwaukee Repertory Theater message of hope, peace, and the presents Milwaukee’s beloved true meaning of love (November holiday classic, “A Christmas 29-December 24). Carol,” now in its 37th year at the historic Pabst Theater, a venue There’s no shortage of nostalgia this season. Next Act Theatre Footnotes
presents the timeless, muchloved holiday story “It’s a Wonderful Life” as a radio play complete with live music, 1950s Milwaukee charm, and sound effects (November 15–December 9). Although it’s not a traditional holiday production, the Skylight Music Theatre is presenting an adaptation of “The Sound of Music,” the musical that has been capturing hearts for decades (November 16–December 31). Wisconsin Lutheran College is hosting the George Dyer Christmas Concert in Schwan Concert Hall. The popular tenor will perform traditional holiday songs and music from movies, musicals, and more (December 15). Choral performance fans take note: The beloved Vienna Boys Choir will perform at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center (November 23) with a concert featuring their classic favorites along with Christmas and holiday music. The Wisconsin Philharmonic presents “A Royal Christmas,” featuring the concert choirs of Waukesha North and West High Schools who will perform classics such as Rutter’s “Star Carol,” selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” and beloved British Christmas carols (December 4). The Pius XI annual Christmas concert is December 4 at St. John’s Cathedral. Waukesha Choral Union will present “Christmas: Lessons and Carols” at St. Luke’s Church in Waukesha (December 7) and St. Catherine’s Church in Cont’d pg. 30 Footlights Performing Arts Magazine

Oconomowoc (December 9). The Bel Canto Chorus will fill the glorious Basilica of St. Josephat with hymns, carols, and John Rutter’s “Gloria” in their performances of “Christmas in the Basilica” (December 8–9). For those interested in more light-hearted productions, In Tandem Theatre presents “A Cudahy Caroler Christmas,” a hilarious homage to bowling, beer, friendship, and forgiveness at the Tenth Street Theatre (November 30–January 5). Waukesha Civic Theatre continues its tradition of wacky and wonderful holiday fun with “Candy Cane Tales and Holiday Carols,” in which heroes and villains such as Scrooge, Frosty and the Heat Miser join forces to sing, dance, and reenact holiday stories and songs (November 30–December 16). The Oconomowoc Arts Center will present Joel Kopischke’s “I Got Yule, Babe,” a witty and slightly irreverent holiday review complete with three back-up singers and a three-piece band (December 7–8). In Next Act Theatre’s presentation of “A Kodachrome Christmas,” John McGivern is Earlene Hoople, the self-proclaimed “Queen of Rural Media,” who entertains with participatory bell-ringing, cookie baking, a family slide show, and some outrageous advice for surviving the holidays with relatives (December 12–31). The Cedarburg Cultural Center presents “Santa’s Liquid Helper,” McMann and Tate’s annual adult holiday comedy show (December 7–8) as well as Wisconsin’s own River Cities Jazz Big Band, who will perform a holiday concert (December 14).
