Now in its 59th season, Milwaukee Repertory Theater is dedicated to providing the highest level of professional theater to Milwaukee and Wisconsin in addition to offering a wide range of educational and community programs. Located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee, the Patty and Jay Baker Theater Complex is a cleverly-converted power generation plant that houses Milwaukee Repertory Theater consisting of three theaters: the Quadracci Powerhouse (720 seats), the Steimke Studio (205 seats) and the Stackner Cabaret (118 seats), which is also a full-service restaurant and bar. Together, these spaces offer a variety of staging options from compelling dramas, powerful classics, award-winning contemporary works to full-scale musicals and comedies.

Milwaukee Repertory Theater is committed to creating plays that are meaningful and relevant to the society we live in – plays that are challenging, visceral and engage the community through the issues they explore. With the start of the 2012/13 Season, The Rep expanded its Artistic Family to 19 Associate Artists. This new creative initiative will build upon the indelible legacy of The Rep’s Acting Company and now will expand to include directors, writers, designers, musicians and actors. This group will help participate and advise in choosing plays The Rep produces as well as other initiatives. They will contribute to the work seen on all Rep stages, read scripts, engage in education projects, along with other duties as well as serve as advocates for The Rep in their home communities across the nation. The Rep has long been committed to a core group of artists and this new ensemble will continue The Rep’s commitment to giving voice to a broad spectrum of cultural, educational and community experiences that serve and reflect the diversity of perspectives found in this region.

DIR ECTOR’S NOTES If you visit the Anne Frank House online (which I highly recommend), you will see a virtual tour of a recreated “annex” with furniture and supplies as they were during the years of hiding. The set you see tonight is as close to a reproduction as possible. Though the specific layout varies (they occupied three floors, we have two) the space you see approximates the square footage of the real annex. We have also replicated the furniture and appliances – similar dining table, similar beds, and yes, the annex even had a stove and kitchen sink. Prior to its occupation by the Franks, the annex was a working lab for Mr. Frank’s preservative company (hence the inclusion of a working kitchen), and at times housed technicians. German-born Otto Frank, a man of means and resources, served as a German officer in the First World War and, because Germany did not invade Holland then, he assumed it would be safe again, which is why he chose to take the family to Amsterdam instead of Switzerland. Though he hoped for the best, he nevertheless prepared for the worst: stockpiling food and medical supplies and slowly, over the course of months, adding beds, dressers, tables, etc. The Van Pels (the Van Daans in Anne’s diary), Otto and Edith Frank spent most of their adult lives in Germany, but Margot, Anne and Peter grew up in Amsterdam and these generational differences are something Anne takes special note of in her diary. Miep Gies, one of their protectors, was not much older than the girls, yet her tiny shoulders bore the weight and responsibility of saving eight lives. For two years, day in, day out, Miep Gies and Victor Kugler (Mr. Kraler in Anne’s diary) brought food, medicine, books and news; every day they risked their lives to protect the inhabitants of the annex. I wonder, who in my life could I ask such a thing of? And, if called upon, could I be as brave and strong and good as Miep Gies and Victor Kugler? For two years those in hiding never ever left their hideout. And I wonder, would I have the fortitude and inner strength to hold on to my humanity, to not fall prey to fear, panic and despair? In interviews years later, Miep Gies brushes off any suggestion of heroism. As she simply states, it was the only thing she could do. She is also quick to remind us that her work was in no way heroic . . . because seven of the eight people she risked all to protect were lost. This is why we make art: to remember and never forget the atrocities and horrors we humans are capable of when hatred and racism run unchecked, to remember that we are also capable of courage and true goodness in the worst of circumstances . . . and tonight, to remember a brilliant little girl, named Anne Frank, who grew up as the world was crashing down around her.
