A RTISTIC DIR ECTOR’S NOTE I’m thrilled that you have joined us for Assassins, which is the third full-scale musical that we have produced in the Quadracci Powerhouse.

We started our musical theater journey two years ago with our critically-acclaimed production of the masterful Cabaret, which was also my first production at The Rep. We then followed this up last season with the provocatively challenging and highly entertaining rock musical, Next To Normal.

Along the way, we’ve received much enthusiastic response from long-term subscribers who may not have previously expected to see musicals at The Rep; and we’ve certainly found an entirely new audience that now comes to The Rep specifically for musicals.

I love the often immediate effect that a dramatically and emotionally powerful piece of musical theater can have on an audience; and I am particularly drawn to musicals of gravitas and scale that encourage much further discussion and debate long after the final curtain has fallen. Given all of this, Assassins seemed a perfect follow-up to our two previous main stage musicals, and they don’t really come more powerful and provocative than this particular piece.

Written 22 years ago now, this musical – with its brilliant score and acerbically witty libretto – has, in many ways, sadly become more poignant with our relatively recent experience of tragedy in relation to gun crime in America. Not just with the assassins – no, let’s call them what they actually are: murderers – or would-be murderer/assassins of Presidents of the United States – but also with those that are involved in the seemingly daily tragedies that happen across America; and, very often, right in our own backyards. Assassins is not in any way a lecture or exposé on the rights and wrongs, or the positives and negatives, of gun culture and ownership in this country, but merely asks us to look at the disenfranchised, sometimes celebrity-seeking, usually mentally ill, men and women of our communities, who decide to take the law into their own hands to make a “statement” to be remembered for all time. Assassins attempts to hold up a mirror to ourselves and to our society, and to take a good long, hard look at how a country – whilst in constant pursuit of the American Dream – can inadvertently encourage and facilitate those who are singing to the tune of “Another National Anthem.”

CAST BIOGR A PHIES Jonathan Altman, Chorus/President Gerald Ford/David Herold Jonathan Altman is beyond excited to be a part of this season at The Rep! Hailing from Warner Robins, GA, he graduated with a BFA in Musical Theatre from Shorter College. He’s also performed professionally with Bigfork Summer Playhouse for two seasons, Post Playhouse and Stephen Foster Productions. Some of his credits include Godspell (Jesus), True West (Austin), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Jimmy) and Into the Woods (Jack), among others. Postcollege, this Southern boy moved to Chicago where he has worked with companies such as Circle Theatre and Light Opera Works.

Endless thanks to his family, friends, Sandy, Ben and everyone at The Rep! Luke Brotherhood, Billy Luke is a homeschooled fifth grader and is excited to be back at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, having appeared in last season’s Rep Lab. He will also be appearing as Smudge in A Christmas Carol this holiday season.

Luke has previously been seen at the Sunset Playhouse as Tommy Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life and the First Stage Children’s Theater production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Luke would like to thank Sandy Ernst, Mark Clements and everyone at Milwaukee Rep for this wonderful opportunity.

Jonathan Gillard Daly, Proprietor Jon is delighted to accept Mark Clements’ invitation to become a Rep Associate Artist. Some of his favorite roles here as a member of The Rep’s resident company include last season’s production of To Kill a Mockingbird, in which he played 9 – Assassins

Heck Tate, Charlie in Death of a Salesman, Herr Schultz in Cabaret, Nicky Giblin in The Seafarer, Arkady in A Month in the Country, Manus in Translations, Jimmy in The Weir and Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Jon is also a founding member of the Great River Shakespeare Festival in Winona, MN, where he most recently appeared in the title role in King Lear.

He is a 30-year veteran of regional theater throughout the U.S., having appeared in productions at American Players Theatre, Clarence Brown Theater, Indiana Repertory Theater, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Court Theatre (Chicago) and PCPA Theaterfest. He is also a playwright.

His musical memoir, The Daly News, has been produced at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Great River Shakespeare Festival, Sacramento Theatre Company, Oregon Cabaret Theater and PCPA Theaterfest.

His newest play, To the Promised Land, will be produced by First Stage Children’s Theater in early 2013. He has also appeared locally in productions at Next Act Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre and the late lamented Milwaukee Shakespeare. He has been married for 30 years to director and text coach, Gale Childs Daly. Love, as always, to Gale and their two children, Sam and Emily.

Lee E. Ernst, Samuel Byck Last season at The Rep, Lee was seen performing the roles of Brabantio/Montano in Othello, Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol and Vince Lombardi in Lombardi.

He was a member of The Rep’s Resident Acting Company since 1993, and with the start of the 2012/13 Season, is now a Rep Associate Artist. Previously at The Rep, he was seen as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman, Leon/Nick in Speaking in Tongues, Scrooge in A Christmas Carol and The Emcee in Cabaret, Sharky in The Seafarer, Frank Lloyd Wright in Work Song, Levin in Anna Karenina, Truffaldino in Servant of Two Masters, George in Of Mice and Men, Clov in Endgame and the title roles in Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, Richard III, The Foreigner and

Lee has also played leading roles with Peninsula Players, American Players Theatre, Madison Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, New American Theater, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Arizona Theatre Company and ACT. Lee is a recipient of The AriZoni Best Actor Award, Minerva Laureate, Shepherd Express Best of Milwaukee and is an inaugural Lunt-Fontanne Fellow. Mr. Ernst received his MFA from The University of Delaware-PTTP and can be heard narrating a new Ronald Reagan documentary for PBS entitled The Reagan Presidency.

She received her BFA in Acting from Montclair State University. This one is for Rey. Steve French, Leon Czolgosz Steve French is honored to make his Milwaukee Rep debut with Assassins.

Off-Broadway, Steve was a member of the Drama Desk Award-winning ensemble of In Transit at Primary Stages and appeared in the world premiere staging of The Burnt Part Boys at Playwrights Horizons. Regionally he has performed in: The 39 Steps (Hartford Stage); Avenue X (Alliance Theatre); Camelot and Big River (Goodspeed Musicals); Man of La Mancha (Monomoy Theatre) and A Moon for the Misbegotten (Long Wharf Theatre). With love to Allison.

Evan Harrington, John Hinckley Evan Harrington has appeared on Broadway in Avenue Q (Brian) and most recently in The Phantom of the Opera (Piangi). A huge fan of Assassins (the show. . . not the people), he’s very excited to make his Rep debut in this amazing piece!

Some other favorite theatrical endeavors: Mary Zimmerman’s Candide (Orator/ Grand Inquisitor); Sweeney Todd (Beadle/ Pirelli); Into the Woods (Baker); The Full Monty (Dave) and The Pirates of Penzance (Samuel). He also had tons-o-fun traveling the country in National Tours of: The Music Man (Ewart Dunlop-Quartet); Kopit/Yeston’s Phantom (Cholet) and Camelot (3rd Torchbearer to the Left).

Fun fact #1: he did an episode of 30 Rock once, playing the pivotal role of “Roy” (don’t blink, you’ll miss him). And Fun Fact #2: he sings in a Meat Loaf tribute band: “Not Your Mama’s MEAT LOAF” in NYC (YouTube – NYMML). He is the Associate Artistic Director of Skylight Music Theatre here in Milwaukee.

Sarah Litzsinger, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme Sarah is thrilled to be back at The Rep after playing bipolar mother Diana Goodman in last season’s Next To Normal. Sarah holds the distinction of being Broadway’s longest running Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She was also seen on Broadway in Marilyn, An American

Fable (Broadway debut), Oliver! The Revival (Bet) starring Ron Moody and Patti Lupone, Les Miserables (Eponine/Cosette) and originated the role of Madeleine in Michel LeGrand’s Amour. Sarah also played Eva Peron in the 25th Anniversary Tour of Evita, directed by Hal Prince and Larry Fuller, and played The Narrator opposite Donny Osmond in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Some of her other credits include Peter Pan (Peter) at Alabama Shakespeare Festival, A Year with Frog and Toad (Bird/Mouse) at Minneapolis Children’s Theater, Tick, Tick . . . Boom! (Susan), Falsettos (Cordelia) and The Last Five Years (Cathy), all at George Street Playhouse. Sarah also won the 2007 Breakout Award at the HBO Aspen Comedy Festival for her duo comedy act and performed at the TBS Comedy Festival at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas in 2008.

J.R. Yancher, Chorus/ James Blaine J.R. Yancher, a native of Davis, CA, graduated from the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts (PCPA) in 2008. Upon graduating, he moved to L.A. where he worked in a number of commercials and short films. In 2011/12, J.R. returned to PCPA as one of four professional acting interns. Favorite roles include Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, John Brooke in Little Women – The Musical, Brodie in The Real Thing and The Corporal in The Caucasian Chalk Circle. Other shows at PCPA include Cabaret, Othello, A Christmas Carol and The Sound of Music, among others. He is honored to be part of Milwaukee Rep’s 2012/13 Season. Stephen Sondheim, Music Stephen Sondheim, one of the most influential and accomplished composer/lyricists in Broadway history, was born in New York City and raised in New York and Pennsylvania.

As a teenager he met Oscar Hammerstein II, who became Sondheim’s mentor.

Sondheim graduated from Williams College, where he received the Hutchinson Prize for Music Composition.

Stephen Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Anyone Can Whistle (1964), Company (1970), Follies (1971), A Little Night Music (1973), The Frogs (1974), Pacific Overtures (1976), Sweeney Todd (1979), Merrily We Roll Along (1981), Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Assassins (1991), Passion (1994) and Road Show (2008), as well as lyrics for West Side Story (1957), Gypsy (1959), Do I Hear a Waltz? (1965) and additional lyrics for Candide (1973). Side By Side By Sondheim (1976), Marry Me a Little (1981), You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow (1983), Putting It

Together (1993/99), Moving On (2001) and Sondheim on Sondheim (2010) are anthologies of his work as composer and lyricist. For films, he composed the scores of Stavisky (1974) and co-composed Reds (1981), as well as songs for Dick Tracy (1990). He also wrote the songs for the television production Evening Primrose (1966), co-authored the film The Last of Sheila (1973) and the play Getting Away with Murder (1996) and provided incidental music for the plays The Girls of Summer (1956), Invitation to a March (1961), Twigs (1971) and The Enclave (1973). Saturday Night (1954), his first professional musical, finally had its New York premiere in 1999.

Mr. Sondheim has received the Tony Award for Best Score/Music/Lyrics for Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Into the Woods and Passion, all of which won the New York Drama Circle Award for Outstanding/Best Musical, as did Pacific Overtures and Sunday in the Park with George. In total, his works have accumulated more than 60 individual and collaborative Tony Awards. “Sooner Or Later,” from the film Dick Tracy, won the 1999 Academy Award for Best Song.

Mr. Sondheim received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1984 for Sunday in the Park with George. In 1983, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which awarded him the Gold Medal for Music in 2006. In 1990 he was appointed the first Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford University and was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award in the 1993 Kennedy Center Honors. Mr. Sondheim is on the Council of the Dramatists Guild, the national association of playwrights, composers and lyricists, having served as its President from 1973 to 1981. In 1981, he founded Young Playwrights Inc. to develop and promote the work of American playwrights aged 18 years and younger. His collected lyrics with attendant essays have been published in two volumes: Finishing the Hat (2010) and Look, I Made A Hat (2011).

Dan Kazemi, Musical Director/ Keyboard/Synthesizer Dan Kazemi is a Philadelphia-based composer, actor, music director and educator, and was Musical Director for The Rep’s recent productions of Always . . . Patsy Cline, Next to Normal and Cabaret. He graduated from Haverford College with a BA in Music Composition and a Theater minor. In Philadelphia, Dan most recently orchestrated and musically directed the world premiere musical, Tulipomania, at the Arden Theatre Company. Dan musically directed Tick, Tick . . . Michael Pink, Additional Musical Staging Michael Pink is an international choreographer and teacher, and has been Artistic Director of the Milwaukee Ballet since December 2002. During that time, he has established himself as a prominent member of the Milwaukee arts community. His dramatic productions of Romeo & Juliet, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Dracula, Don Quixote, Giselle 1943, The Sleeping Beauty, Esmeralda, Cinderella and Peter Pan have been hailed as “Classical ballet for the 21st century.” His other credits include choreography for stage, screen and television. He was nominated for a West End Theatre Award in 1980. His work is currently in the repertoire of the Royal New Zealand, Boston, Colorado, Atlanta and Norwegian National ballet companies.

He trained with the Royal Ballet, dancing with English National Ballet from 1975 to 1985. He worked alongside Christopher Gable as Associate Artistic Director of the Northern Ballet Theatre and was a founding director of Ballet Central in London from 1986 to 1998. BIOGR A PHIES Dawn Helsing Wolters, Managing Director Dawn Helsing Wolters joined Milwaukee Repertory Theater as Managing Director in 2009. She currently serves as President of the Milwaukee Arts Partners consortium and as a member of the Bridge Committee for the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, the National Advisory Board for the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program at Ten Chimneys, the Rotary Club of Milwaukee and the Advisory Board for the Chicago-based Still Point Theatre Collective. Dawn was Executive Director of Chicago’s Court Theatre from 2005 to 2009, where she served on the board of The League of Chicago Theatres, chairing its Nominating Committee. As a founding board member of the Hyde Park Cultural Alliance, she helped lead the group’s transition to an independent not-for-profit organization, chairing its Governance Committee. Dawn served as Director of Development at Center Stage in Baltimore, and held marketing and public relations positions at Center Stage and Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. While completing her MFA in Theatre Management at Yale School of Drama, she was Associate Managing Director of Yale Repertory Theatre and Managing Director of the Summer Cabaret. Dawn has served on the Executive Committee of the League of Resident Theatres and consulted in leadership development, capacity building and fundraising and served in an advisory capacity for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Commission, Arts Midwest, The University of Chicago’s Graham School of General Studies and Goucher College’s graduate Arts Administration program and been a guest lecturer at several colleges and universities.

BIOGR A PHIES Marissa Robinson, Stage Management Intern Marissa is thrilled to be joining Milwaukee Rep this season. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and the New London Barn Playhouse. She also recently spent a semester in London where she got the fabulous opportunity to work and study at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, at the Duchess Theatre and the Playhouse Theatre in the West End. ORCHESTRA Blair Bielawksi, Tenor sax/Alto sax/ Soprano sax/Clarinet/Bass Clarinet Blair Bielawski has an extensive and varied background in education and performance. He holds a BA in Music Education from Carroll University (Waukesha, WI, 1981) and an MA from the University of Wisconsin (Madison, WI, 1984). He taught for 12 years at a variety of grade levels. Blair is currently an author and part of the advisory group for Lorenz Educational Press along with being an author and composer for Heritage Music Press. Before joining Lorenz, he was a member of the Hal Leonard editorial and arranging staff for 17 years, working on all aspects of the music catalog.

Anton Hatwich, Bass Bassist Anton Hatwich has been living in Chicago for the last decade. He performs regularly with many of the leading lights of the creative improvised music scene there, including Keefe Jackson, Frank Rosaly, Nick Mazzarella, Jason Adasciewicz, Fred LonbergHolm, Josh Berman, Toby Summerfield, Matt Schneider, Nick Broste, Tim Daisy and Jaimie Branch. Hatwich also works regularly on the West Coast with Bay Area musicians Aram Shelton and Kyle Bruckmann. Out of town work has included national and international tours.

Festival performances include Chicago Jazz Festival, Umbrella Music Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival, Ring Ring Festival (Belgrade) and Ulrichsburger Kaleidophon in Ulrichsberg, Austria. He leads two of his own bands: the Anton Hatwich Quartet and 333. In addition to his performing and recording career, Anton maintains a busy private teaching studio in Chicago.

Bob Monagle, Guitar/Mandolin/Banjo Bob has been working as a guitarist in the Milwaukee area music scene for the past 30 years as both a leader and a sideman. He has been the guitarist for several national and regional theater productions including Rent, Hairspray, Jacques Brel, The Last Five Years, Next to Normal and several others. Last year Bob also performed with the Milwaukee

BIOGR A PHIES Symphony Orchestra for the Pops concert “Bond Forever.” Bob is also co-owner of a local recording studio/post production business (Tanner-Monagle), where he maintains a busy career as a session guitarist playing on local and national television and radio commercials.

Patrick Morrow, Drums/Percussion Patrick is glad to be back at The Rep after drumming for Always . . . Patsy Cline, Next to Normal and Cabaret. In addition to The Rep, Patrick has provided percussive accompaniment for many local theaters including the Fireside Theatre, First Stage Children’s Theater and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. He spent a great deal of 2009/10 touring the U.S. and Canada with Little House on the Praire: The Musical starring TV’s Melissa Gilbert.

When not doing “legit” gigs, Patrick can be found playing with local powerpop sensation, Trolley, and jaunting the globe with Eddie Clendening & the Blue Ribbon Boys. A huge thanks goes out to Mark and Dan for keeping a drummer drumming.

Kyle Samuelson, Trombone/Euphonium Kyle Samuelson is one of the most indemand and diverse freelancers in the area. Regularly performing with a wide range of groups from classical to jazz to rock, he has performed with all of the top orchestras and theaters in the area, as well as with several national acts. Kyle also enjoys a robust teaching career with a large studio of private students ranging from high school to adult. He is a longtime resident of Milwaukee and is married to Jennifer, with whom he has two great kids, Brett and Chase.

Tom Schlueter, Trumpet/Flugel/Cornet Tom Schlueter has played trumpet since the age of eight. He won the Milwaukee Symphony Young Artist Competition at 15 and is two-time winner of the International Trumpet Guild Solo Competition. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he studied with Arnold Jacobs and Renold Schilke of the Chicago Symphony and accompanied the MSO on their European tour. He has been principle trumpet with Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra, Waukesha Symphony,

Skylight Opera Theatre and Milwaukee Chamber Brass. His varied free-lance work has included studio recordings, Broadway shows and playing with entertainers such as Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughn, John Denver and Doc Severinsen.

Barrie Shaw, Piccolo, Flute, Clarinet, Soprano Sax, Alto Sax On completing his education, Barrie joined the “Regimental Band of The Coldstream Guards” in London. After four years service, he left to pursue a professional career touring with The Drifters, Benny King, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Detroit Emeralds, Odyssey, Howard Keel, and many more. Barrie has a long history with London’s West End, playing on Grease and Smokey Joe’s Café simultaneously. Other West End credits include: The Two Ronnie’s at the London Palladium, Blondel, Winnie The Musical, Three Guys Naked from the Waist Down, Cabaret, A Chorus Line, Barnum, The Magic Castle, They are Playing Our Song, Chess, Starlight Express, Stop The World I Want To Get Off, West Side Story and Gypsy in Australia. Barrie played on Chicago, The Sound of Music, Jolson, Piaf, Shout, Annie, The Wizard of Oz, The Man of La Mancha and End of the Rainbow.

Deaf or Hard of Hearing Services: The Quadracci Powerhouse (QP) and the Stiemke Studio are equipped with an infrared listening system which ensures clarity of sound from any seat in the house. Performances are offered in American Sign Language for a Thursday evening of all QP productions and one Sunday matinee for all Stiemke Studio productions. We also offer a Captioned Theater performance during the second to last Sunday matinee performance of all QP productions. Please call The Rep Ticket Office at 414-224-9490 for more information.
