PL AY WRIGHT BIOGR APHY — ARTHUR MILLER Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright, novelist and screenwriter Arthur Miller was born October 17, 1915, in New York City. Miller was the second of three children born to Jewish immigrants Isidore Miller and Augusta Barnett Miller. His father, who ran a small coat-manufacturing business, was hurt financially by the Great Depression and those struggles helped shape Miller’s viewpoints and topics of interest as a writer. After graduating high school, he read Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novel The Brothers Karamazov, which inspired him to pursue writing as a career. He attended City College of New York for two years and worked in an auto parts warehouse to save money to attend the University of Michigan, where he studied English and graduated in 1938 with multiple playwriting awards. In 1947, he wrote what would become his first successful play, All My Sons. A tragedy about a manufacturer of faulty war materials, it was appreciated throughout a country still reeling from a recent depression and war, and it established Miller as a respected playwright. Two years later, he wrote his popular play Death of a Salesman. The play opened for the first time in 1949 on Broadway at the Morosco Theatre. It ran for more than 700 performances on its initial run and won Miller the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Drama Critics Circle Award. It has been translated into more than a dozen languages and was adapted for the screen in 1951. Miller followed up Death of a Salesman with his third successful Broadway play, The Crucible (1953). The play was a criticism of Senator Joe McCarthy’s investigations on anti-American activities veiled in a setting of the late 17thcentury Salem witch trials. In 1956, Miller himself was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He refused to cooperate and was convicted of contempt, but the decision was reversed in 1958. Other playwriting credits include A View from the Bridge (1955), After the Fall (1964), Incident at Vichy (1965), The Price (1968) and Broken Glass (1994), which won the 1995 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. In addition to screen adaptations for Death of a Salesman and The Crucible, Miller wrote the screenplay for The Misfits (1961). Miller wrote numerous non-fiction works later in his life, including Salesman in Beijing (1984), which discussed the difficulties and cultural dilemmas of staging Death of a Salesman in 1980’s China, and his autobiography, Timebends (1987). Miller passed away in Roxbury, CT, on February 10, 2005. His legacy lives on through his written works, works that encourage us to look closer at the American Dream and its effect on human nature.

Dear Rep Extended Family, I am very disappointed not to be appearing in Death of a Salesman. At this time I must instead play the role of care-giver to Rose and help her fight against her illness.
