A RTISTIC DIR ECTOR’S NOTES Hello! Heartfelt thanks to each of you who attended (often multiple times!), our production of Ragtime, one of the most successful shows in Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s history. I feel that it was a thrilling ride for all of us—performers and audience members alike—and one that has certainly made our souls far richer for the experience. In listening to feedback from our many satisfied patrons last season, a sizeable portion of you commented that you’d love to see a good-old, laugh-out-loud comedy in the Powerhouse again. Noises Off, without doubt one of the best comedies ever written (many would argue it is the best), comes to you as a result of our taking on board that feedback. A hilarious farce about what happens both on and off stage, Noises Off has proven itself popular time and time again, with both hardened theatergoers and occasional attendees alike. Written in 1982, Noises Off has withstood the test of time with long initial runs in the West End and on Broadway, in a film adaptation, and West End and Broadway revivals, as well as countless productions worldwide in many different languages. This season, thirty-one years after the play’s premiere, there are currently twelve licensed productions of Noises Off taking place between now and June of next year—and that’s just in the United States alone. Unquestionably a contemporary classic and masterpiece of its theatrical genre, Noises Off is a play that deserves to be revisited and seen by every new generation of theatergoers; hence, our revival of it here at MRT, 15 years after its initial production in the Powerhouse.
Noises Off is also a deceptively difficult play to pull off successfully, and requires a super smart director to guide a brilliant troupe of actors through the rehearsal process to be both funny and convincingly bad at times—sometimes even downright terrible! I am thrilled to welcome director KJ Sanchez and her team back to The Rep, after they brought us such a beautiful and moving production of The Diary of Anne Frank last season. KJ is joined in this production by a fantastic cast that includes many actors well-known to Rep audiences, including Kelley Faulkner and Associate Artists Jon Daly, Laura Gordon, Gerry Neugent, and Deborah Staples. They are joined by guest actors Aaron Christensen and Joe Dempsey, and Acting Interns Joe Boersma and Sara Zientek. With our annual production of A Christmas Carol running in the historic Pabst Theater and Forever Plaid running in the Stackner Cabaret, we are thrilled to be able to offer three incredibly different productions this holiday season that will warm your heart and make you laugh out loud. Cheers, and Happy Holidays, Mark Clements Artistic Director
