C A R R I E R O N D E AU M E M O R I A L S C H O L A R S H I P We are most pleased to present the $1,500 Carrie Rondeau Memorial Concerto Scholarship. This award goes to the winner of the Senior Symphony Concerto Competition, involving many of the finest young musicians in southeastern Wisconsin. Carrie Rondeau, a talented violinist and longtime member of MFY/MYSO, died in 1993, at age 24, after a courageous battle with leukemia. As a result of generous contributions from her family and friends, the Carrie Rondeau Memorial Concerto Scholarship Fund was established to memorialize Carrie and to provide support for the musical excellence she so admired and exemplified. Her generous family has perpetuated this memorial.

BIOGR APHIES Jerome Linn is a freshman at Dominican High School. Along with playing trombone for three years in the Junior Wind Ensemble, he also enjoys playing the drums, piano and participating in his school’s theater program. He has enjoyed writing Glory for the John Downey Creation Project and would like to thank Ron Foster for helping him along the way. He would also like to thank Tom Dvorak, David Rieder and Carter Simmons for helping to make this possible. Alexandra (“Allie”) Greene is a cellist in Senior Symphony. She is a senior at Kettle Moraine High School, where she plays in the Chamber Orchestra. She has been playing cello since she was eight years old and studies cello with Janet Marshall. She studied piano with Mariella Guillen, Vince LaTona and Diane Kachelmeier. Allie has received scholarships from the Waukesha Symphony Orchestra and the Kettle Moraine Music Parents Association. This year she was named a Coca-Cola Scholar. She has participated in the WSMA Solo and Ensemble Festivals since she was in seventh grade, receiving first place awards at both the district and state levels every year in cello solo, as well as first place awards with various ensembles, and an exemplary performance award in cello solo. In MYSO, Allie has participated in the Davidson Chamber Ensemble Program, played for master classes, and, with her violinist sisters, played in a trio for community functions. She is also an intern with MYSO’s Progressions program, which is especially rewarding to her. Allie is grateful to be participating in the

John Downey Creation Project again this year. While a John Downey Fellow as an eighth grader, Allie composed a piece for Sinfonia entitled Storm, which was performed by MYSO orchestras, Interlochen Arts Camp, Kettle Moraine High School during its tour of Australia and New Zealand, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This piece won awards at the state, regional, and national levels of the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Composers Contest, including the John and Margaret Pierson Award. She also wrote a piece for Philharmonia in 2009 entitled Dream in Peace. In her spare time, Allie volunteers at LifeStriders, a therapeutic horseback riding center, and enjoys skiing, horseback riding, travelling, painting, and ceramics. John Hougard, a senior at Kettle Moraine High School, plays French horn for MYSO’s Senior Symphony. He started playing piano at age eight, has been taking private horn lessons since sixth grade, and currently studies with Karen Suarez-Flint. Although John has not continued with piano lessons, he still enjoys improvisation on the piano, and this past summer attended the UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic where he took classes to further expand his jazz improv skills. John and his family regularly play music for their church, soloing and in small ensembles. Last year he had the honor to play Taps (on trumpet) for memorial services for the American Legion. John is a member of Kettle Moraine’s Wind Symphony under the direction of Kevin Erickson. He participates in his school marching band, and has marched four years in the Milwaukee Holiday Parade, along with performing homecoming field shows. Under the direction of Susan Krechel, the music theory classes he has taken at Kettle Moraine have Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra 3

B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) introduced him to music composition. Although he has written many small compositions for his theory class and outside of school, Simply Sharp is his first major composition to be performed. Aside from music, John also enjoys cross country, track, and other endurance sports. He plans to attend University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to study chemical engineering and music composition. “I play the notes as they are written, but it is God who makes the music. This famous quote by Johann Sebastian Bach is what Isaac Young believes to be the foundation of how music is played. Bach has been one of the biggest inspirations and role models to Isaac because not only was he one of the greatest musicians to ever live, he was a very humble man who lived for God and devoted his life to serving others. Isaac acknowledges that it was the equally hard work of many people that helped him get to where he is today. Isaac has enjoyed performing with MYSO ensembles for seven years now, and is especially grateful to Mr. Carter Simmons for all the incredible opportunities he has offered. This past summer, Isaac spent

five weeks at the professional-training program at the Eastern Music Festival, and had the privilege to work alongside world-famous conductors like Gerard Schwarz and Jose-Luis Novo. However, if you know Isaac well enough, it is no secret that conducting both orchestral and choral music is his true passion. He studies conducting with Dr. Larry Harper of Carroll University, served as choral director of the St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church choir of Pewaukee, and is in his fourth year as conductor of the Waukesha Area Chamber Orchestra, a student-run non-profit charitable organization. He has studied violin for three years with Dr. Alexander Mandl and previously with Lisa Johnson Fuller, and owes a lot to them for their expertise, drive, and passion which has assisted beyond words in past successes which include being a two-time recipient of a Waukesha Shining Stars scholarship and being named finalist in the 2010 MSO Young Artists Competition. Finally, Isaac would like to thank his family and friends, the people that encourage and support him the most on a daily basis. Isaac believes it is really God who makes the music, and maybe the music is more than just the notes on the page, because it includes the people God has put into his life.

M A X LINN Thirteen-year-old flutist Max Lin of New Berlin is an eighth grader at Eisenhower Middle School. He has been playing flute for four years and piccolo since summer 2010. Max studied flute with Jill Streator and has been studying with Judith Ormond of the Milwaukee Symphony for the last year and a half. He currently plays with MYSO’s Junior Wind Ensemble and Flute Chorale, and is this year’s Flute Chorale Concerto Competition winner. In January, he served as principal flute for the National Band Association’s Wisconsin All-State Junior Band. In 2010, he was chosen for the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Band. Max was also

awarded a scholarship as a UW-Whitewater flute camp honor camper last summer. In school, Max was invited to join the high school band and has served as principal flute ever since. In addition to his work on flute, he has studied piano for six years, currently with Tatiyana Smith. He has received numerous awards for his piano performances, including Honorable Mention in the Wisconsin Music Teachers’ Association Badger Keyboard Competition, and winner of Milwaukee Music Teachers’ Association Youth Concert series. Max began composing music when he was nine and ever since enjoys composing piano music. Fantasy is his first flute choir piece and was composed with guidance from John Downey Creation Project Supervising Composer Greg Surges.

BIOGR APHIES Ten-year-old Jake Van Bendegon, Jr., has been playing violin for six years and has just begun to play the piano. Jake is a fifth grader at Golda Meir School in Milwaukee. He enjoys playing with Legos, reading, writing and playing the violin which he studies with Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra violinist Glenn Asch. Jake is a first violinist in the MYSO’s String Orchestra Central and has been playing with the group for almost two years. Jake’s piece, The Paradox’s Fury, is an exciting theme song for a battle between a good guy and a bad guy, with the first and second violinists representing the good guys and basses and cellos representing the bad. Jake wrote this piece with professional composer Julie Brandenburg. This is his first composition, but he has been thinking up ideas for pieces for a long time. Sabrina Raber has been composing ever since she first started playing piano, though her beginning pieces weren’t quite as complex as the one played today. In

addition to her composing in her spare time, Sabrina also has been playing the piano for eight years, taking lessons at the Conservatory of Music, has been playing the flute for six years and likes to fiddle around with other instruments around her house. In MYSO, Sabrina is part of the Philharmonia and Chamber Flute Ensemble groups and loves being in them and rehearsing the incredible music she draws her inspiration from. Outside of the musical world, Sabrina swims competitively, runs around Whitefish Bay, draws, reads, writes and plays softball. The inspiration for her piece came from her memories of star gazing in Seattle, her favorite place in the world. She’d like to thank her composing coach, Julie Brandenburg for teaching her the whole other side of composing, her family and friends for dealing with her, and the many teachers who listened to draft after draft in order to make it the best it could be. Luke Patterson, 16, has been playing the piano since kindergarten. He began composing works for solo piano at the beginning of his sophomore year and Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra 21

B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) has since devoted himself almost exclusively to composition. In addition to playing clarinet and tenor sax, he takes private lessons on piano from James Sodke at Lakeshore Conservatory in Racine. He continues to compose every opportunity he gets, especially when he should really be studying his chemistry. He hopes to pursue a career as a professional musician or composing scores for movies and video games. In his free time he enjoys quoting The Princess Bride and meowing back at cats. Ten-year-old Julian Rhee, the youngest member of Philharmonia, is the winner of the orchestra’s 2011 Concerto Competition. Julian was also named winner of the 2010

MYSO Sinfonia Concerto Competition. Julian has won numerous competitions in the past including the Bach Double Competition at age seven. This year, he was a winner at the Walgreens National Concerto Competition, Society of American Musicians Competition, Music Festival Competition and Sejong Music Competition. He was also awarded a Merit Scholarship to attend the Music Institute of Chicago. Julian is a fifth grader at Brookfield Academy, and his favorite subject in school is history. When he has free time he loves to read and play video games (especially Pokemon). Julian would like to thank Mr. Ron Melby and Mr. Carter Simmons for giving him an opportunity to perform the third movement of the Bruch Concerto with the orchestra. Currently, he is studying with Ms. Hye-Sun Lee of the Music Institute of Chicago.

J O H N D OW N E Y C R E AT I O N P R OJ E C T MYSO is proud to collaborate with one of America’s premier new music ensembles, Present Music, as we bring twelve world premiere student compositions to performance this year. In memory of Dr. John Downey, both a visionary composer and an inspiring man, MYSO musicians are invited to have the opportunity to meet with a professional who guides them from the early structural and conceptual issues of composition through the final printing and rehearsals of their work. The John Downey Creation Project provides MYSO ensembles, as well as MYSO composers, important and exciting experience by undertaking the many challenges of new music. John Downey served as Director of Music Theory and Composition for Music For Youth/MYSO for more than 40 years and was a very important and beloved member of the MYSO family until his passing in 2004. Dr. Downey, a Distinguished Professor of Music at UW-Milwaukee, was an internationally renowned composer who collaborated with the great artists of his time and, among many honors, was knighted by the French government. Among many pieces performed by musicians all over the world, he wrote a number of works for Music For Youth/MYSO, as his MYSO students were an essential and joyous part of his career. Professor Downey played a critically important role in the lives of thousands of students, several of whom have become noted composers. He was absolutely central to MYSO and its mission for many years. The 2011 John Downey Fellows and the MYSO ensemble for which they are composing are as follows: Thomas Bagin, MYSO Brass Quintet as part of MYSO’s Chamber Ensembles Program; Alexandra Greene and John Hougard, Senior Symphony; Hannah Greene, Sinfonia; Torrin Hallett, MYSO Woodwind Quintet as part of MYSO’s Chamber Ensembles Program; Max Lin, Flute Chorale; Jerome Linn, Junior Wind Ensemble; Luke Patterson, Philharmonia; Sabrina Raber, Chamber Flute Ensemble; and Jake Van Bendegon Jr., String Orchestra North and South; and Alec Aldred, MYSO Jazz Studies. We are confident that Dr. Downey would be thrilled by the enthusiasm, creativity and the seriousness of purpose displayed by these young MYSO composers, to whom he would have lovingly referred as “my geniuses.” 28 Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra

M I LWAU K E E YO U T H S Y M P H O N Y O R C H E S T R A Celebrating 55 years of excellence in arts education, Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) has grown from a single orchestra of 30 in 1956 to become, by several measures, the largest and most extensive youth orchestra program in the country. Serving more than 900 talented young musicians from as many as fourteen counties in Southeastern Wisconsin, this award-winning program offers the highest level of training in ensemble musicianship to motivated young people from diverse backgrounds across southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Students with varied levels of instrumental skills benefit from the broad range of MYSO experiences, all created to foster talent, build character and enhance lives by nurturing an enduring love of music. In 2005, MYSO moved into the acclaimed Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, a collaborative initiative of MYSO and First Stage Children’s Theater. Home, also, to dance and vocal music training programs, this 56,000 sq. ft. state of the art facility in Milwaukee’s historic Schlitz Park is quickly becoming a national model for arts education, with a mission of using the arts to enhance all children’s lives. Several innovative MYSO offerings, prompted and made possible by the move, have received notable awards and recognition—locally, regionally and nationally— particularly for MYSO’s ambitious efforts in outreach and community partnerships. Building on the rich past of its first half-century, MYSO combines many respected, established programs with exciting new ventures. Founded with assistance from the Junior League and Rotary Club of Milwaukee, MYSO’s offerings have expanded from a single orchestra to include: Senior Symphony—MYSO’s flagship ensemble is a full symphony orchestra made up of very advanced players, generally in the upper grades of high school. It has long been recognized as one of the nation’s top youth music ensembles, hailed for artistic excellence both nationally and internationally. Philharmonia—This full symphony orchestra provides musicians with experience in preparing a great variety of shorter works from the romantic to post-modern periods; comprised generally of younger high school musicians. Chamber Orchestra—A subset of the Senior Symphony, this is a very advanced group organized to play standard chamber orchestra repertoire—music not generally played by the large symphony orchestras. Sinfonia/Junior Symphony Orchestra—A large, intermediate-level string orchestra whose members are generally in middle school and early high school. In the spring, selected wind players from the Junior Wind Ensemble augment this group to form the Junior Symphony Orchestra, playing full orchestra literature. Junior Wind Ensemble—An intermediate-level wind ensemble comprised of woodwind, brass and percussion players in grades 6-9. String Orchestra—A string training program, which rehearses as four smaller groups at regional sites around the area (Central, North, South and West). These groups combine to perform as two large orchestras. Chamber Flute Ensemble—An advanced, multi-part flute choir that works on cutting edge, advanced flute ensemble repertoire and more sophisticated arrangements of orchestral repertoire. Flute Chorale—A multi-part flute choir that plays standard flute ensemble repertoire and arrangements of orchestral repertoire. Members are generally in middle school or early high school. 34 Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra

M I LWAU K E E YO U T H S Y M P H O N Y O R C H E S T R A ( c o n t .) Progressions—an intensive, introductory string training program consisting of lessons and orchestra experience; directed toward City of Milwaukee populations which have previously been under-represented in MYSO. Jazz Studies—consisting of classes and small combo opportunities for middle and high school students, with a special focus on City of Milwaukee students. Calypso—a steel band, originally formed in partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools. White Rock Elementary initiative—a beginning string instrument training program at White Rock Elementary School, a predominantly Latino public school in downtown Waukesha MYSO’s extensive schedule of rehearsals, performances, outreach initiatives and enrichment opportunities also includes: a large chamber music program, music theory and composition classes, “side-by-side” rehearsals, combining less experienced players with those who are more advanced, free master classes, workshops, competitions, recitals and much more. MYSO has partnered with numerous other organizations to better serve both students and community. Examples of these collaborations, in addition to the facility initiative with First Stage Children’s Theater, include side-by-side reading workshops with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, an annual concert with the Milwaukee Children’s Choir, Jazz Collab, a joint venture with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, a “new music” composition initiative with Present Music, a talent development partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs, ongoing programs in cooperation with Milwaukee Public Schools and periodic artistic initiatives with such groups as Danceworks, Master Singers and Milwaukee Choristers MYSO’s talented music faculty members blend creativity and pedagogical expertise with their great breadth of musical knowledge. They come from all corners of the musical world and include UWM faculty, Milwaukee Symphony players, seasoned and recognized school educators and other noted area musicians. MYSO’s experienced, capable administrative staff has been remarkably stable while at the same time doubling the organization’s enrollment over the past fifteen years and successfully completing the fundraising for—and building of—a major new community facility. The entire MYSO family is united by its dedication not only to training future performers and music educators but especially to developing in many thousands of adults a much deeper appreciation of the arts in general—and fine music in particular—and to using the arts to enhance lives. While participation in most MYSO ensembles is tuition-based, we have a longstanding commitment to making our programs available to all qualified musicians; scholarship assistance is available upon application, and no student need be denied an opportunity to participate because of financial need. MYSO has been a member of the United Performing Arts Fund since UPAF’s founding in 1969. We are grateful to UPAF and to the thousands of other generous donors who make our programs possible!
