N O T E F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R Dear Theatergoer, In 2000, I was recently out of college, had a desk job at Steppenwolf Theatre, and started a theater company with my friends from school. I founded it with my best friend and primary collaborator, a very talented designer who I graduated with. We’d been incredibly close for a couple of years, we’d confided deep truths to each other, she’d helped me through some tough times, and we founded this company. It was surprising to me, then, that we had a massive falling out that broke our friendship and snowballed into a nasty war between us, over politics. I wasn’t surprised that she was going to vote for Nader, as she presented herself as a neo-hippy. But when I called that a vote for Bush, and she insisted that Bush would be better than Gore, we launched into a fight that went from politics to the personal really fast. Every misunderstanding between us suddenly was brought to light, and our need to defend ourselves took precedence over the love we had for each other. It happened so quickly. She eventually left the theater company and we stopped speaking all together. When I look back, this still amazes me. I like to think of myself as open-minded, as empathetic, as a good listener. I found out, when face to face with this opposing value system, I was none of those things. I thought I knew what was right. I thought I had the moral upper hand. I thought if I fought her hard enough she would see how mistaken she was. And I lost her friendship because of it. In a time when the stresses of recession, natural disasters, and war has stressed and divided our country, we are all on the defensive. As we struggle to understand our changing cultural identity in trying times, the polarization of our nation grows strong, and a standoff is taking place. But as we stand on the battleground of our political and personal debates, we cease listening. We cease seeing the other point of view. We cease looking for compromise. We cease being open-minded. And then we lose each other. Joanie Schultz Director
