DIR ECTOR’ S NOTES – MICHAEL COTE Y “Compassion is of value and enriches our life only when compassion is severe, which is to say when we can perceive everything that is good and bad about a character but are still able to feel that the sum of us as human beings is probably a little more good than awful. In any case, good or bad, it reminds us that life is like a gladiator’s arena for the soul and so we can feel strengthened by those who endure and feel awe and pity for those who do not.” - Norman Mailer So where were we? I asked that question on our first day of rehearsal in 2021, exactly one year to the day that we ended rehearsals due to the pandemic. We had gotten through one week last year before having to put the show on indefinite hold, but even in that short week you could tell that we had something special. Many thanks need to be given to David Cecsarini for keeping the pilot light on and committing to completing this process, allowing it to come, dare I say, full circle. After feeling like we’ve all been part of one of the circles of hell for the past year, it’s a real honor to come back with this amazing group of artists and tell this important story -- a story about a journey from great darkness to astonishing light which, in itself, is an apt way to describe the past year. Shortly before we began 9 CIRCLES the first time in 2020, I saw a screening of the documentary Midsummer in Newtown which interviewed a handful of parents whose children were killed in the horrific shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The mother of one of the young girls who was murdered said something remarkable. She said that the person she thinks the most about in this world besides her daughter is her daughter’s shooter and all the opportunities their community missed to intervene in the trajectory of this troubled young man’s life -- all the calls for help, explicitly or otherwise, from someone battling a severe personality disorder -- and how he shouldn’t have been given access to guns, but rather love and support and structure from his whole community. She didn’t excuse his monstrous actions, but even in her grief this compassionate mother acknowledged that no one is born a monster. She pointed out that there are troubled young children just like him sitting in a first grade class that aren’t fated for tragedy. At the center of 9 CIRCLES is a similarly troubled young man named Daniel Reeves, who, like the shooter at Sandy Hook was not fated for tragedy nor born a monster. Not only is this troubled young man given access to guns, he’s made an instrument of war. He’s trained and expected to kill. He’s placed in the most unrelenting, disorienting and brutal circumstances imaginable, where performing the unimaginable can come at the flip of a switch for those who never should have been there in the first place. I think the fact 9 CIRCLES exists is a courageous act of compassion that only a Jesuit priest/ playwright like Bill Cain could perform. Ripped from the headlines, Cain was compelled to write this play as he learned not only the horrific details behind what one young man did as a soldier in Iraq, but more about the young man himself. (If you’d like to dive deeper into the real life events that inspired the play and an unflinching look into the Iraq War, read Black Hearts by Jim Frederick.) Cain has not written his play to give us simple answers, but to point us to the harder, more important work we can do as humans: to try and understand why people do terrible things. While we often champion the theatre as an engine of empathy, Cain’s uncompromising play asks us to stretch our capacity for empathy to include those who might not “deserve” it, for the people it’s easier to simply label as monsters. Ultimately for me, Cain’s play sheds light on 6

DIR ECTOR’ S NOTES – MICHAEL COTE Y all the Daniel Reeveses in the world and what responsibility we, the community, have in how they turn out. While there are no easy answers, this much is at least clear to me: we shouldn’t be asking young men and women to fight our wars abroad when they are already fighting a war within. Because they will lose, either one battle or the other (or both)and that is on us. Going back to the Norman Mailer quote above, when I was poised to direct 9 CIRCLES a year ago, I wasn’t so sure which was the story of Daniel Reeves: one where he endures life’s gladiatorial arena for the soul, or one where he does not. But I’m a different person today given all that has happened this past year, which includes, for me, becoming a father of a beautiful boy full of potential. Today I choose endures. I choose that despite what Reeves has done and despite where the story ends, I believe he does endure by traversing the great darkness and discovering the most astonishing light. And so even in a play filled with such bleakness, I think there is hope -- both in the possibility that the Daniel Reeveses of the world can come to know themselves and that we have learned to be there to guide them so that don’t have to take that journey alone. Lastly I want to give a big shout out to Mark Ard of Feast of Crispian, a veteran of the Marine Corps who served in Iraq. Mark joined us in rehearsals to share his experiences and his enthusiasm for our telling of a story that touches on what soldiers are going through. He reminded us again and again of the necessity of doing this play.
