DIR ECTOR’ S NOTES – M ARTI GOB EL There is one character in Joe Zarrow’s, PRINCIPAL PRINCIPLE, that we never get to meet; however, in the course of the production we hear of her. We certainly have evidence of her legacy, dedication and compassion for all. I speak of Lavonne, whom we learn during the course of the production, has recently retired. Save the newly hired Kay, Lavonne’s experience and professionalism are referenced by all of the teachers. For Denise, she is a contemporary and friend. Shelley offers a nod to the culture of teacher communication and camaraderie as established by Lavonne. And Ola is tasked with the awesome responsibility of filling her shoes as the new department head. Lavonne, in short, is the railing of knowledge guiding the English Department to higher heights as they navigate the tremendous task of educating number upon number of students at this fictitious high school. More importantly, she stands as representation of an often-overlooked class of educators: The retired teacher. I’d like to take a minute to acknowledge those teachers who came before. The ones who welcomed and trained and mentored not only new teachers but the ones who may have struggled as they learned how to effectively operate in this most challenging of professions. They must not be forgotten for it is they who survived all of the trends in education, the neverending merry-go-round of teachers, and new policies and approaches to education, all while attempting to adjust to expectations set down by administrators that often have no practical experience in the classroom. It is they who stayed in the trenches while war was waged on the art of teaching in order to satisfy standards and rubrics and lackluster funding in the public school system. It is they whose contributions continue to ring loud as a bell long after their time in the school building ends. So, to all of those retired teachers, I dedicate this production to you. Your service to our youth and your fellow teachers is deserving of the deepest bow. “Sometimes, it’s the last one that makes you first.” (CeeLo Green) Marti Gobel
