Welcome to the finest arts programming in the DuPage county area and beyond, and a happy holiday season to you all! I love this time of year. With all of the holiday colors, the festive lights, the hustle and bustle, and yes, even the cold, there is a feeling of excitement and energy in the air. Thank you for sharing a few moments from your busy lives to join us here at North Central College as we bring you our holiday lineup of great artists! We continue to offer something to please every possible palate. You may be here to celebrate the annual presentation of “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol,” a different look at the holiday tale from the view of Scrooge’s partner. You may be with your entire family watching the Theatreworks USA production of the original “A Christmas Carol,” the one from Scrooge’s view. You might be here for both! We certainly hope so. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” with David Benoit can’t help but bring back beautiful memories to all from my generation while introducing an entirely new group of arts lovers or future arts lovers to that special holiday twist. We are honored to be presenting the men who started the four-part tight male harmonies, The Four Freshmen with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, another perennial favorite. It’s the holiday season. Enjoy! You may be here for Aaron Neville and Quintet featuring Charles Neville. See? I told you we were bringing you the best of the best. Where else could you hear this great a variety of artists, not pay for parking, be within walking distance of dozens of great restaurants all eager to welcome you into their doors? Nowhere. This is where the arts happen. This is where you can see and hear the greats close to where you live in some of the greatest arts venues available. We look forward to welcoming in a new year and welcoming you to the arts. Looking for a wonderful holiday gift for the arts lover in your life? Consider a gift certificate from the North Central box office. Looking for that romantic evening on the town? Join us for our new cabaret performances featuring Chicago’s own Spider Saloff in the intimate Madden Theatre. Want to celebrate something special? Find out what’s happening at North Central and let us help you make that celebration even more special. Speaking of something special, be sure to watch WTTW on December 26 for the child prodigy Ethan Bortnick on piano, and then come and see him live in the Wentz Concert Hall on January 14th. BIOGR APHIES 2009 marks Bob Ferreira’s 17th year in the Four Freshmen. Bob’s career with the group began when he was approached by former instructor and Freshmen alumnus Kirk Marcy with an offer to audition for the renowned vocal group. One month after auditioning, Bob found himself moving to the group’s home base of Las Vegas, Nev. Ferreira’s music studies started comparatively late in life when he started taking drum lessons his sophomore year in high school. Vocal training began Bob’s junior year when he joined the Symphonic Choir and eventually the vocal jazz ensembles. After high school, Bob attended Edmonds Community College in Lynwood, Wash. where he joined the regionally renowned vocal jazz ensemble Soundsation under the direction of Kirk Marcy. After two years of performing with Soundsation and one year playing drums in the alternate vocal jazz lab, Bob transferred to Central Washington University majoring in music education. However, after one year, Bob joined the Freshmen and moved to Vegas where he still lives today. In 17 years with the Freshmen, Bob has performed to audiences in 49 states and eight countries and the travels only grow more frequent. Born May 16, 1976, Brian Eichenberger was raised in Apple Valley, Minn. He got his first taste of jazz harmonies in Minneapolis, when his high school vocal group sang Take 6’s arrangement of “A Quiet Place.” “When I plunked out my part on the piano, I couldn’t believe I would actually sing these lines. A few weeks later, everyone was getting a handle on their parts and this amazing thing happened. When all these weird parts were sung together, it just floored me…what a beautiful sound!” He continued studying harmony at Phil Mattson’s School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa.“There were about 50 music students, living in the middle of nowhere, with nothing to do except play, sing, eat, sleep and breathe music.” In 1996, The Four Freshmen were looking for a new member to play bass and sing the second part. With a strong recommendation from Phil Mattson and an audition, Eichenberger got the job. A few years later, Eichenberger moved up to lead singer. He is only the third lead singer in the Freshmen’s history. “I really enjoy singing the melody. I don’t have to think 10 North Central College

about the notes as much, and I can put more focus on phrasing, tempos and the overall sound we make.” Outside of The Freshmen, Brian enjoys spending time with his wife, Rebecca and daughter, Marisa. He also admits to spending a lot of time wandering around Minnesota on his Harley. Curtis Calderon joined the Freshmen in late 2001. Three years earlier, he had a chance meeting when the Freshmen came through San Antonio and saw him performing at the Landing Jazz Club on the riverwalk that led to him being called when their current trumpet player decided to retire from the group. Curtis grew up in San Antonio, Texas and started trumpet at the age 11. He won first chair in the Texas All-State Jazz Band his senior year in high school. After graduating, he went on to play and tour with many big bands, including the modern day Glenn Miller Orchestra. He currently lives in San Antonio, Texas with his two sweet and gentle 100 lb. Rottweilers. Some of his musical influences early on were Clifford Brown (his favorite trumpeter), Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and John Coltrane. His current favorites on his iPod are Stevie Wonder, Jason Mraz, Louis Armstrong and Joe Henderson. Vince Johnson sings baritone and plays bass, guitar and trombone. He was born September 3, 1970, and raised in San Luis Obispo, Calif. In junior high, Johnson knew he wanted to be a musician. He says he has all the Four Freshmen albums and practically wore out the “Voices in Love” cassette while driving his car around town in his school days. Johnson brings a distinguished résume to the Freshmen. Johnson received his bachelor of music degree from California State University Long Beach in 1994 and his master’s degree in Jazz Studies from USC in 1996. His musical experiences vary from playing principal bass in a symphony orchestra to playing drums throughout his childhood (lucky neighbors!). Before joining The Freshmen in 1999, Johnson worked as an accompanist, educator and performer. He fills what little free time he has between shows staying fit by swimming, running and playing golf. The Four Freshmen and Take 6 are his favorite musical groups.

C H I C AG O JA Z Z O R C H E S T R A Jeff Lindberg’s Chicago Jazz Orchestra Tonight’s performance is the Chicago Jazz Orchestra’s third appearance at Wentz Concert Hall. Founded in 1978 by Jeff Lindberg and the late Steve Jensen, the Jazz Members Big Band (now Jeff Lindberg’s Chicago Jazz Orchestra) was selected to be the opening band for the First Annual Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. The band, composed of Chicago’s top musicians, is both Chicago’s oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation and one of the oldest jazz repertory orchestras in the country. Jeff Lindberg, conductor and artistic director, is one of the foremost transcribers in jazz. As a result, the orchestra’s repertory draws upon his vast library, which includes the works of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter, Oliver Nelson, Ray Charles, and many others. The CJO also performs compositions and arrangements by members of the orchestra, including Charley Harrison, associate artistic director. As a world-class orchestra, the CJO perpetuates both classic and new music for the American jazz orchestra as it was originally conceived, through live performances and recordings. After hearing the orchestra on the NPR broadcast of the 1981 Chicago Jazz Festival, vocalist Joe Williams began a collaboration with the ensemble that flourished, including ten appearances at the Kennedy Center Honors Gala in Washington, D.C. The CJO’s position of house orchestra at The Kennedy Center Honors continues tomorrow evening, December 5, when the CJO makes its 22nd straight appearance. The orchestra also has performed at The Kennedy Center for the National Symphony Orchestra. The CJO has built a reputation for its high performance standards and has been the jazz orchestra of choice for nationally and internationally renowned artists such as Clark Terry, 12 North Central College

Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, Kenny Burrell, Ahmad Jamal and vocalist Kurt Elling, whose performances with the CJO include appearances at The Kennedy Center, the Spoleto USA Festival, Chicago’s Millennium Park and Harris theaters, and club venues. Always looking for new challenges both in repertory and stylistic choices, Jeff Lindberg has infused the orchestra with a spirit of versatility that has made the group a favorite performer not only in jazz venues, but also in concert settings, receptions and dances—just about anywhere that exceptional big-band music can be presented. The CJO is also known for its commitment to transcribing classic American jazz recordings in order to document and preserve this repertory for future generations. In recent seasons, the CJO has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for artistic excellence. The CJO currently maintains one of the largest libraries of transcriptions of original jazz recordings in the country, with music representing every style of jazz from every era. Outside Chicago, the CJO has toured Europe twice and performs regularly in Washington (D.C.). In addition to live performances, the CJO records classic American jazz masterworks. Its 2004 release of the Miles Davis/Gil Evans adaptation of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” featuring trumpet legend Clark Terry was awarded five stars by DownBeat magazine and also was included among the year’s best at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The Chicago Jazz Orchestra Association is committed to perpetuating this music. As a result, the orchestra presents free jazz clinics and concerts to high school musicians wherever the opportunity exists as well as through a partnership with the Merit Music School in downtown Chicago.

NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE Presents

Christmas with Aaron Neville and his Quintet featuring Charles Neville

BIOGR APHY Aaron Neville I Know I’ve Been Changed When the storm of life is raging Lord Stand by me When this old world is tossing me like a ship on a raging sea Will thou, Mary’s baby...Shelter in the time of storm… Stand by me. – Charles A. Tindley In his opening notes on “I Know I’ve Been Changed,” the artist known to millions of devoted fans worldwide as Aaron Neville stands before the microphone not as a musical legend, but as an ordinary man appealing to an eternal God. His signature vibrato rises and dips in a musical prayer full of passion, utterly sincere. It is perhaps the most powerful moment on a uniquely moving album— his first gospel recording since Hurricane Katrina ripped through the city he cherished, destroying his personal home, and forever altering so much of the life he knew. Despite that tragic backdrop, the project plays not as a mournful reflection, but rather as a hopeful celebration of the three things that have shaped Aaron Neville most of all—his hometown, his music and his faith. In grand New Orleans style, “I Know I’ve Been Changed” celebrates Aaron Neville’s 50th year in recorded music. The album brings the artist’s career full circle, returning him to the music he loved first—gospel music—and reuniting him with Allen Toussaint, the legendary songwriter, musician and producer who produced Aaron’s first recording session in 1960. Toussaint, who grew up in a nearby New Orleans neighborhood and attended the same school as the Neville brothers, has been a frequent collaborator with Aaron over the years. “Aaron gives the song, the arts, the fullness of his heart and soul every time,” Toussaint 16 North Central College

says. “He has always been that way. It’s good to know that when something is that good, it’s good forever—the velvet voice of Aaron Neville.” Producer Joe Henry and Neville recorded “I Know I’ve Been Changed” over a period of five days, using a stripped-down production approach to showcase the strength of the twelve handpicked songs, as well as the beauty of Neville’s unmistakable vocals. In true old-school fashion, the musicians played along with Neville’s vocals in-studio to capture the feel of a live set. Arranging and recording such a large amount of material over such a short period required masterful focus and teamwork. “When I go to the gym, I go to work out. When I go to church, I go to pray. When I go to the studio, I go to sing,” Neville explains. To handle the challenge of that level of performance, the producer assembled some of the top players. “I call them hard hitters at the bat,” Neville says. “With them playing, there weren’t too many mistakes.” After four days of working on the instrumentation and lead vocals, Neville pulled together a group of singers who had worked with him on tour and in-studio for many years. They followed Aaron’s vibe, creating classic background arrangements to match the era in which most of the songs were originally recorded. “It was like a labor of love for everybody. They loved all the songs and they put their all into it,” Neville explains. “It was a fun album, working with those guys.” Over the past five decades, the indelible spirit of New Orleans has been synonymous with the musical dynasty known as the Neville Brothers. For Aaron Neville the solo artist, there is an equally intimate connection between his music and the faith that has sustained him for his entire life. Through

B I O G R A P H Y ( c o n t .) challenge and tragedy, he’s managed to thrive, protecting both his heart and his voice. Ask him how and he says simply this: “He who sings once, prays twice.” “My Momma, Amelia Landry Neville, always taught the golden rule to us— to treat others as we would like to be treated,” he shares. “One of her favorite sayings was this: ‘I’ll only pass this way once. Therefore any goodness or kindness I can show, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.’”

That perspective served him well in the months after Hurricane Katrina. “Right after the storm, we’d go places to perform and run into displaced people from New Orleans everywhere,” Neville reflects. “So when we go sing, we’re singing for them and letting them know they’re not by themselves. There’s hope.” The spirit of New Orleans is marked by an undying hope. On this project, Aaron Neville captures that spirit— reflecting the hope of his hometown, drawing hope from his faith, spreading hope through his music.

Libby Winchester PROGR A M “Marley was dead, to begin with…” – and what happens to Ebenezer Scrooge’s mean, sour, pruney old business partner after that? Chained and shackled, Marley is condemned to a hellish eternity. He’s even given his own private tormentor: a malicious little hell-sprite who thoroughly enjoys his work. Desperate, Marley accepts his one chance to free himself. To escape his own chains, he must first redeem Scrooge. So begins a journey, of laughter and terror, redemption and renewal, during which Scrooge’s heart, indeed, is opened; but not before Marley — in this irreverent, funny and deeply moving story — discovers his own. Organic Theater Company takes you on this unusual voyage through a familiar tale. You will never think of Scrooge and Marley the same way again. Chicago’s Organic Theater Company brings its holiday show “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol” to Naperville in December for five performances in North Central College’s new Thrust Theatre in Meiley-Swallow Hall. “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol” is a funny and very moving work that brings the ghost of Jacob Marley out of the shadows and into the spotlight and tells his version of the Dickens classic. Written by award-winning playwright, actor and director Tom Mula, this fanciful tour of Marley’s afterlife and his assignment to redeem Scrooge and himself is a delightful holiday show. Mula published his novel “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol” in 1995 and it quickly became a Chicago Tribune bestseller. The audio version has been broadcast nationwide on NPR for seven seasons and received an INDI Award for Spoken Word from the Association for Independent Music. The theater version received the prestigious Cunningham Prize from the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul. It premiered at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, received four Joseph Jefferson nominations, an After Dark Award, and was repeated the following year. Organic Theater Company is the second-oldest theater company in Chicago and is known for fostering new talent and shaping the personality of the city’s theater scene. Bringing its holiday production to Naperville is the first time Organic has staged a show in the western suburbs. The company’s unique approach to theater utilizes a permanent group of artists over a sustained period of time and presents them in a rotating repertory or series of productions. Audiences have the opportunity to see the same actor in a variety of roles and the actors get to work as a unit and freely experiment with their craft. Originally produced by the Goodman Theatre Chicago, Illinois, on December 4, 1998 Robert Fall, Artistic Director Roche Schulfer, Executive Director. 20 North Central College

TO M M U L A – P L A Y R I G H T TOM MULA has been an award-winning playwright, actor, and director for more than 25 years. He received two Joseph Jefferson Awards in 1991 for his play “Golem” at the National Jewish Theatre and for his work on Nicole Hollander’s hit musical, “Sylvia’s Real Good Advice”. In 1995, Adams Media published his novel “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol” (the backstage version of Dickens’ Scrooge story told by Marley’s Ghost;) it became a Chicago Tribune bestseller. The audio version has been broadcast nationwide on NPR for seven seasons, and received an INDI Award for Spoken Word from the Association for Independent Music. The play version received the prestigious Cunningham Prize from the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul. It premiered at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, received four Joseph Jefferson nominations, an After Dark Award, and was repeated the following year. Recent and current productions include: Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival (two seasons), American Stage Festival, Houston Stages, North Coast Repertory, Delaware Repertory Company, 1894 Grand Opera House, Third Avenue Playhouse, Bristol Riverside Theatre, New Theatre Miami, and Sage Theatre Group. In 2001, Peninsula Players in Wisconsin premiered his newest play, “Almighty Bob”. Some of Mr. Mula’s recent acting credits include “Hot Mikado” at Drury Lane, for which he received an After Dark Award and a Joseph Jefferson Award; his award-winning one man performance of his book “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol;” Lawrence the nurse in Christine Thatcher’s “Emma’s Child;” the Fool in “King Lear” with James O’Reilly; Richard III, Caliban, Bottom, Feste, Malvolio, and Prospero; another award-winning solo turn as “The Circus of Dr. Lao;” and seven seasons (over 400 performances) as Goodman Theatre’s Scrooge. His directing credits include Jeff nominations for “Porch” and “A Life”, and the world premiere of Larry Shue’s “Wenceslas Square” in Chicago and at the Queens’ Festival in Belfast. O R G A N I C T H E AT E R C O M PA N Y P.O. Box 578189 • Chicago Illinois 60657 • 312 634 0199 Organic Theater Company, of Chicago, was founded in the 1970s by artistic director Stuart Gordon. Some productions were taken on the road, touring to New York City venues such as The Performing Garage, The Public Theater, and The Ambassador Theatre. Notable productions have included: “Warp,” world premiere production of “Sexual Perversity in Chicago” by David Mamet, “Cops” by Terry Curtis Fox, starring Dennis Franz and Joe Mantegna, “Bleacher Bums” by Joe Mantegna, (also production for WTTW television that aired in 1979) and many others. Most recently, OTC has produced its original adaptations of “The $30,000 Bequest” by Mark Twain, “Bartleby the Scrivener” by Herman Melville, and Joseph Conrad’s “The Secret Agent.” “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol” marks Organics second appearance at North Central College. OUR MISSION Organic Theater Company is committed to a vision of creating productions with a permanent group of artists over a sustained period of time and presenting them a rotating repertory. This approach, while relatively unusual in the United States, is widely accepted in much of the Western world as the ideal way to make a body of theatrical work. Rotating repertory creates the opportunity for a unique relationship between the company and its audience, one in which the same actor can be seen in a variety of roles over a short period of time. It also allows the actors to work as a single instrument, much like the world’s great orchestras and dance companies.

NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE Presents

A Charlie Brown Christmas with David Benoit

Friday, December 17, 2010 8:00 p.m. Presented at Wentz Concert Hall 171 E. Chicago Avenue, Naperville, Illinois www.northcentralcollege.edu/show 2010 – 2011 Fine Arts Performances Sponsors

DAV I D B E N O I T “A Charlie Brown Christmas” features a collection of holiday favorites and Vince Guaraldi-penned Peanuts classics, such as the instantly recognizable “Linus and Lucy.” The performance was put together by five-time GRAMMY-nominated musician, composer, and arranger David Benoit, who has been composing music for Peanuts television specials for over ten years, including the 2000 recording, “Here’s to You, Charlie Brown.” In October 2008, David Benoit took a much-needed breather from the frenetic pace of life in Los Angeles and headed up to the mountains near Saratoga to become an artist-inresidence at Villa Montalvo. Finding peaceful solitude and discovering fresh inspiration in a small cabin near the nonprofit Montalvo Arts Center, the five time GRAMMY®-nominated veteran composer and pianist—one of contemporary jazz’s most acclaimed artists for over two decades—wrote “Botswana Bossa Nova” and “Will’s Chill,” two unique pieces unlike any he had done before. These became the foundation for the overall global music concept behind Benoit’s stirring and provocative new CD “Earthglow,” his first set of original material in four years. The title track was inspired by the stunning NASA photo of our planet which graces the cover. In an age where many listeners prefer the instant gratification of purchasing individual tracks on iTunes, Benoit takes the bold step of writing good old-fashioned liner notes to explain the way the eclectic 11-track collection developed. After mentioning that the great will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas was an influence on “Will’s Chill,” the multi-talented performer says, “I was interested in experimenting with some of the new ‘jazz-lounge-Euro-chill’ music I was hearing at upscale boutique hotels and chic Japanese sake bars.”

Focusing on the high energy hybrid of old school soul-jazz and infectious world beat textures and rhythms of “Botswana Bossa Nova,” he adds, “I loved the world mix of exotic ethnic percussion, African voices along with Brazilian beats. With the aid of the computer sequencing program Logic Pro, I came up with some of these new ideas. To give the instruments a more realistic sound, I played everything in real time as opposed to step timing. Months later, with the same format, I came up with “Straightaway,”“Unbelievable,”“New Creation” and “Sneaky As A Cat” at my home studio in Palos Verdes, California.” Beyond what he writes in the liner notes, the song “Botswana Bossa Nova” also owes a debt to the “Soul Bossa Nova” sound of the Austin Powers theme, and the old school funk/jazz jam “New Creation” was inspired by The Hit Crew’s “(You’re) Unbelievable.” The easily rhythmic “Straightaway” mixes soulful jazz touches by Pat Kelley’s languid guitar and Jeff Kashiwa’s sax with an unexpected, very cool bossa interlude. Living up to it’s name, “Unbelievable” features a combination of the trademark Benoit piano hook. “New Creation,” a vibrant, percussive retro-jam which was the album’s original title track, is very atypical Benoit, with the pianist getting into a Chick Corea/Herbie Hancock vibe on the classic Fender Rhodes. Fans of Benoit’s numerous Charlie Brown/Vince Guaraldi related projects, including 2008’s “Jazz For Peanuts,” will love the whimsical ‘60s flavors of “Sneaky As A Cat,” which features remarkable work by Benoit’s lifelong friend, flute legend Tim Weisberg. Benoit was tapped by other muses during an engagement in Tokyo, where he rented a piano and composed “Brownie’s Gone” (an elegant reflection on a beloved cat who ran away) and the coolly percussive title track “EarthNorth Central College 25

DAV I D B E N O I T ( c o n t .) glow” with nothing but a Judy Green music pencil and ledger buff manuscript paper. When he returned to Palos Verdes, he penned the gently rolling, gospel-flavored “Easy Day” (featuring sampled African voices) and the darkertoned trio ballad “Downtime,” whose easy swinging waltz rhythm skips a beat every so often. The six minute closing track “Freedom At Midnight (The Schroeder Variations)” is a unique mix of Benoit’s classic 1987 radio hit and a stirring take on Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” as if Schroeder from Peanuts was playing it. The pianist and his band have made the unlikely medley a staple of their live show since they did it impromptu several years ago. Benoit credits Clark Germain, his longtime engineer and co-producer on “Earthglow,” with reining in his off-thebeaten-path impulses and blending them with the identifiable sound that mark his repertoire of over 30 recordings since the late 70s. “I really loved the vibe of ‘Will’s Chill,’” he says, “and when I started recording, I wanted the whole album to have that edgy, chill sound, with long loops and lots of samples, with a little piano in the mix. For obvious and very good reasons, Clark brought me back to myself and took these new, exciting ideas I had and put them in perspective as part of a recognizable David Benoit record. It’s got a lot of energy, but he smoothed it out and kept me in check. I think the intimacy of writing and recording in-house, so to speak, without outside writers and producers as I had done in recent years, ensured that every note I intended actually appears on the album. Everyone involved had a blast recording “Earthglow” and exploring this new territory.” Since launching his recording career in 1977, David Benoit’s expansive career as a contemporary jazz pianist has included over 25 solo recordings. His 80s releases “This Side Up, Freedom at Mid-

night” and the GRAMMY®-nominated “Every Step of the Way” are considered influential genre classics. Among his other GRAMMY®-nominations are those for Best Instrumental Composition (for “Dad’s Room,” from 1999’s “Professional Dreamer”) and Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance (for the GRP “All-Star Big Band”). His prolific output since 2000 includes several prominent Charlie Brown related projects (including “Here’s To You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years” and the star-studded “40 Years: A Charlie Brown Christmas” that reflect his lifelong passion for the music of original Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi and solidify Benoit’s role as his musical heir. Benoit has also released the Billboard contemporary jazz charting albums “Fuzzy Logic,”“Right Here, Right Now”,“Full Circle” and “Heroes,” which paid homage to the pianist’s top jazz and pop influences. Benoit’s ever-expanding slate of orchestral music endeavors include his ongoing role as conductor of the Asia America Symphony Orchestra and leading such eminent orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the symphonies of London, Nuremberg, San Francisco, Atlanta, San Antonio and San Jose. Concurrent with his burgeoning career as a conductor, he recorded 1996’s “American Landscape” with the London Symphony Orchestra and 2005’s “Orchestral Stories” with members of the Asia America Symphony Orchestra and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.“Orchestral Stories” featured his first piano concerto, “The Centaur and the Sphinx,” and his acclaimed symphonic piece “Kobe,” both of which he has performed in live settings across the country. In 2009, Benoit performed and conducted Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” with the Asia America Symphony Orchestra in a show that included Broadway great Lea Salonga; he later conducted Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony” with the same orchestra in his critically acclaimed debut at Los Angeles’ Disney Hall. North Central College 27

DAV I D B E N O I T ( c o n t .) Benoit’s notable film scores include “The Stars Fell on Henrietta,” produced by Clint Eastwood and starring Robert Duvall; and “The Christmas Tree,” produced by Sally Field, voted Best Score of 1996 by “Film Score” Magazine. Benoit has also been a longtime guest educator with the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, winning the organization’s “excellence in music education” award in 2001. While many instrumental artists slap easy, throwaway titles on their projects, with “Earthglow,” Benoit put a lot of effort into finding the perfect title that would convey his musical and cultural intentions: “The task of finding a title to best represent the music contained herein was challenging at best. I started with ‘Frozen Music,’ a term to describe architecture, but with the exception of a few of my notable architect friends, nobody really got it. Then ‘New Cre-

ation’ was suggested, but as we began to discuss artwork and concept, the title seemed uninspired and lacking a theme. I went back and reviewed all the song titles and “Earthglow” jumped out at me. I believe it was the best word to illustrate the spirit of the project.” For David Benoit fans old and new, basking in the Earthglow is bound to be a transcendent experience as well as an invitation to explore exciting new frontiers in jazz.
