Choreographer: Antonio Hidalgo Martinete A rhythm said to derive from the workers in the forges—from the word martillohammer. Here the dancers use bastones (canes) to mark out the complicated rhythms.

Seguiriya Seguiriya is one of the oldest Flamenco forms where the serious, almost tragic sound of the music gives the dancer a chance to express sorrowful feelings. The heaviness of the music leads to a chance to work with complex rhythmic patterns.

The women use mantones, the shawl that originated in the Phillipines.

Soleá por Bulerías The soleá por bulerías is a variation of the soleá, where the underlying bulerías toque (style) gives the dance a lighter feeling. Soleares are the essence and root of Flamenco. The name soleares is derided from the Spanish word “soledad”, which means loneliness or solitude. The themes of its lyrics are of romantic tragedy, desolation and death.

Tangos The Tangos gitanos, originally from Cádiz, are one of the oldest gypsy cantes.

They belong to the category of more festive and resplendent Flamenco songs and dances. The tango is a sensual and exciting dance. Its style is driving, rhythmical, and straightforward.

Mujeres “Mujeres” demonstrates flamenco traditions within a contemporary context. The work highlights the traditional elements used by women in flamenco dance - the castanets, fans and shawls, and how the bata de cola (dress with a train) is used in both traditional and contemporary flamenco. This traditional costume was once only used as stately attire, but the modern female dancer uses this costume in new ways; as defense/offense against the male dancer, and as a “toy” to play with and express humor and lightness.

Tientos This 4/4 rhythm dance is majestic and sensual. The sometimes slow wiry movements let the dancers express emotions easily.

Alegrias The Alegrías were originated in the seaport of Cadiz. The word Alegrías means joy or happiness, and the songs are light and carefree in spirit. They can express great intensity of feeling and the mood is optimistic and high-spirited.

Dancer: Antonio Hidalgo Rumba Flamenca The Rumba is influenced by the Caribbean rhythms, from when Spanish travelers went back and forth to the “New World” and brought back Latino rhythms to Spain.

Or Fin de Fiesta (Por Bulerías) The name Bulerías comes from “burlar” or to “make fun.” The flamenco party ends with Bulerías, a “jam session” in which everyone takes their turn to show their stuff.

The baile por Bulerías (bulerías dance) is one of the most vivacious and difficult dances, requiring a great deal of gracia (grace) and sense of rhythm.

Program subject to change W H O ’ S W H O I N T H E C O M PA N Y CARLOTA SANTANA (Founder and Artistic Director ) has been designated “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine in recognition of her commitment to creating new works and developing young artists and choreographers. She has dedicated her company to the mission of building bridges between cultures, using the universal spirit of Flamenco.

The company was founded in 1983

by Carlota Santana and Roberto Lorca; it was their vision that new Spanish dance should not only find a permanent home in the U.S., but also an environment in which its creation and performance would thrive.

Under Ms. Santana’s direction, the company has expanded its repertory by presenting new music, dramatic 6 North Central College

works, and a mixture of various dance vocabularies, as well as by integrating Hispanic-American influences. Recent creations include “Bailes de Ida y Vuelta,” flamenco’s journey through Latin America, “Mano a Mano,” a tribute to the bullfighter Manolete, and the contemporary flamenco story-ballet “Federico,” a celebration of the life of Federico García Lorca, all at The Joyce Theater where the company performs an annual season.

Ms. Santana created the company’s innovative arts-in-education program, integrating Spanish dance and culture with the school curriculum, and has traveled widely implementing this program. She is a member of the dance panel for the New York State Council

W H O ’ S W H O I N T H E C O M PA N Y ( c o n t .) on the Arts and has served on the panel for the National Endowment for the Arts. She is on the faculty of Duke University and has taught at Long Island and New York Universities.

Ms. Santana is a recent recipient of a Choreographer fellowship from the North Carolina Arts Council and is a member of the North Carolina Dance Alliance. Under her artistic direction, the company has performed at Lincoln Center, The Joyce Theater, The New Victory Theater, Summerdance Santa Barbara, Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh, Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Van Wezel Performing Arts Center in Sarasota, Universidad Bucaramanga in Colombia, South America, Palacio de Congresos in Granada, Spain, Discovery Theatre in Anchorage, Alaska, Leid Center in Lawrence, Kansas, Paul Poag Theatre in Del Rio, Texas, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art among many others.

ANTONIO HIDALGO (Associate Artistic Director, Dancer, and Choreographer) was born in the town of Lucena (Córdoba) Spain, and has worked with many companies throughout his professional career. These include the companies of Jose Antonio, Paco Romero, Jose Greco and Antonio Gades where he danced the principal role of Escamillo. He has collaborated with companies such as that of Maria Benitez, Masamy Okada and Yolanda Gonzalez as well as various flamencofusion groups such as Kon-raza and Arickytwon. Hidalgo has appeared on Spanish television and theatre having worked with directors such as Miguel Naros, Salvador Tavara and Antonio Molero. In partnership with Inmaculada Ortega, he directs the Company Aroma Flamenca. He has received commissions from the New York State Council on the Arts for his acclaimed pieces “Mano a Mano,” “Bailaor/Bailaora” and ” Imagenes Flamencas” which toured nationally

W H O ’ S W H O I N T H E C O M PA N Y ( c o n t .) and premiered in New York at The Joyce Theater in 2001 and 2002 and 2006 respectively. Most recently Antonio has been working as rehearsal director and performer with the Fundación Antonio Gades whose mission is to preserve the legacy of this most famous Spanish choreographer.

JULIA CHACÓN (Dancer) Extensively trained in ballet, Julia first studied Spanish dance under Lydia Torea, with whom she was performing by age 16. Later, she attended the University of New Mexico and received her BFA in dance, magna cum laude. She continued her studies in Madrid, Spain at Amor de Dios where she trained under maestros El Ciro, Manuel Reyes, Rafaela Carrasco, and Belen Maya.

Julia has been a company member of Omayra Amaya Flamenco Sin Limites (Boston) and Maria Benitez Teatro Flamenco (Santa Fe), with whom she was principal female dancer. She has performed in various American tablaos including Pepin and the Hyatt in Scottsdale, Alegria in Long Beach, ODC in San Francisco, and Pipa in New York City. Julia founded her own troupe “Inspiracíon Flamenca” in 2008 and her choreography has been performed at the Shanghai Opera House in China as well as throughout the United States.

She has taught at the New School for the Arts (Arizona), Moving People Dance (New Mexico) and the Institute for Spanish Arts (New Mexico).

LESLIE ROYBAL (Dancer) a native of New Mexico began her career at age five performing with a Mexican folkloric dance company. After a brief hiatus from dance while earning a BFA in theater from Stephens College, she continued her education at the University of New Mexico where she studied Contemporary Dance and Flamenco. Proficient in both the Contemporary dance and Flamenco idioms, Leslie continues her studies in New York and Spain, performs in many of the New York tablaos, is the Managing Director of Murray Spalding Mandalas, performs with 8 North Central College

M’oro Flamenco and has appeared in “La Traviata” and “Carmen” at The Metropolitan Opera.

FANNY ARA (Dancer) began her dance studies at the age of three at the Irene Popard School in St. Jean de Luz in France. In 1991, she began training in Spanish classical dance and for the next ten years she traveled regularly to Madrid to study with maestros Isabel Quintero and Antonio Najarro. She studied piano at the Bayonne School of Art for 11 years and received a BA in literature with a specialty in music. After graduating from the Bayonne School of Art, she relocated to Spain where she pursued flamenco studies with Juana Amaya, El Torombo, Manolo Soler, Hiniesta Cortes and at the academy of Mario Maya. Presently living in San Francisco, she is a company member of Caminos Flamenco. Fanny was nominated in the category of Most Outstanding Individual Dancer (2006) from the Isadora Duncan Dance Awards.

ADRIAN MEJIAS (Dancer) has studied classical ballet, Spanish classical dance, flamenco and regional dance with the finest maestros. His flamenco teachers include Manuel Reyes and Alejando Granados and his regional teacher was the famous Azorin. Adrian has worked with the companies of Ballet Nuevo Español, Luisillo, Maria Rosa, and with Rafael Aguilar. He was a finalist in 2005 in the Certamen de Flamenco in Madrid. He has appeared in Teatro de la Zarzuela and Casa Patas. For the past few years, Adrian performed with the Antonio Gades Company with whom he toured throughout Europe.

RICARDO ANGLADA (Guitarist) a native of Northern New Mexico, began playing guitar at age 12. In 2003, he won 1st place in the Festival Flamenco Internacional Concurso. Under the study of first his father, Ricardo later studied with Jose “Chuscales” Valle as well as with artists such as Pedro Cortes, Santiago Aguilar, Anton Jimenez, and Pedro Sierra. He works

W H O ’ S W H O I N T H E C O M PA N Y ( c o n t .) with the flamenco program at the University of New Mexico and at the National Institute of Flamenco under the direction of Eva Encinias-Sandoval.

Ricardo is currently the guitarist for the American Flamenco Repertory Company, “Yjastros” under the direction of Joaquin Encinias. Ricardo has worked with many flamenco artists throughout his career and works closely alongside his cousin Vicente Griego, flamenco singer. In 2007, Ricardo co-starred in the film “Cante Jondo” directed by Lewis Teague.

JAVIER NAVARRO (Guitarist) began his studies in his native Cordoba with “Merengue de Córdoba.” He received a scholarship from the Cristina Heeren Foundation in Seville and there studied with Manolo Franco, Miguel Ochando, Paco Serrano, among others. He has worked as an assistant professor with dancers and singers such as: Milagros Menjibar, Paco Taranto, Javier Baron and Rafael Campallo. In 1999, he won the first prize for accompaniment of guitar for the competition “Jóvenes Flamencos de Córdoba.” Javier has toured worldwide with such renowned companies as Antonio Márquez, Javier Latorre and Domingo Ortega. He has performed at tablaos in Barcelona, Seville, Cordoba and Tokyo and worked with the company of Yoko Komatsubara in Japan. He has also been part of “experimental 4deStar,” performing in Madrid.

FRANCISCO OROZCO “YIYI” (Singer) of an Andalusia family, born in Barcelona, was introduced to Flamenco rhythms at

the tender age of four. Yiyi was trained by flamenco singer and father, Joselón de Jerez, in his Spanish peña named “Peña Fosforito.” Considered a “child prodigy” of percussion, Yiyi began his professional career at the age of twelve. By age seventeen, and one CD later, he became more involved with singing, and left Spain for Germany on a long-term contract with the company “Flamenco Rubio”. Since that time he has performed with “Compañia Flamenca Alhama” throughout Europe and Japan; with María Benitez “Teatro Flamenco” and Domingo Ortega as well as at “Casa Patas” in Madrid; with Jose Greco II; and world-renowned guitarist Serranito. He has also performed with Alejandro Granados, Yolanda Heredia, El Toleo, El Pelao, María Serrano, La Tania and Antonio Granjero.

JUAN MANUEL MORA (Singer) was born in Barcelona and has sung at festivals and recitals with such artists as Miguel Poveda, Gabriel Moreno, Juan Habicuela and Vicente Soto Sordera among others. He has performed at tablaos in Barcelona such as El Cordobes. When moving to Madrid, he has performed at tablaos there such as Torres Bermejas, Casa Patas and Las Carboneras. He has performed with the companies of Rafael Amargo, Maria Juncal and Manuel Liñan. Most recently, he has performed with the musical “Enamorados Anónimos” in the Teatro Rialto in Madrid. He has also performed in a program for television entitled “Marochandé Flamenca.”

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS Ginger Hildebrand (violin, bouzouki, and classical guitar) holds a Master’s degree in guitar performance from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore where she worked with Manuel Barrueco; she studied both violin and guitar in her undergraduate work at Dickinson College. She claims her ability to perform on many instruments is due more to her lack of focus than any abundance of talent. She’s been performing professionally since she was 19 with her husband David, focusing on authentic early American music and instruments. Together they’ve provided music for documentaries, PBS specials, and on stages at Williamsburg, Mt. Vernon, the Smithsonian, and the like.

They have released five CDs and two children. Ginger also teaches privately and has done educational outreach for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra through their Arts Excel program.

the Bloomington Early Music Festival Orchestra and the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra. In the summer of 2005, she performed with the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra in the world premiere of Johann Mattheson’s Boris Goudenow and was on faculty at Oberlin’s Baroque Performance Institute. Kathryn has recorded for the Naxos label.

Ryan McKasson (fiddle) claimed the National Scottish Junior Fiddle Championship in 1995 and went on to become the youngest National Scottish Fiddle Open Champion in 1996. He has shared the stage with Elvis Costello, Beck, Bjork, Gavin Friday and composer Phillip Glass, among others. His Seattlebased band, McKassons, plays to packed houses, bringing an American sensibility to traditional Scottish folk songs that have the feel of Celtic music blended with the spirit of folk rock and bluegrass.

A founding and driving force of such influential bands as The Drovers, Wilding, Comas, Bua, and The Otters, Jackie is a fixture in the studio and in concert settings, sympathetically accompanying such great artists as Daire Bracken, Kevin Burke, Dennis Cahill, Liz Carroll, John Doyle, Alain Genty, Martin Hayes, Paddy Keenan, Philip Masure, David Munnelly, Aidan Burke, Daithi Rua, and Jimmy Keane.

Kathryn Montoya (oboes & recorder) is completing a doctorate at Indiana University, where she studied historical oboes with Washington McClain and recorder with Eva Legêne. She holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University. Ms. Montoya has performed with many ensembles, including Apollo’s Fire, The Newberry Consort, Ensemble Arion, the Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Opera Theatre, Aradia Ensemble, and the Washington Bach Consort. She is a recipient of the prestigious Performers Certificate at Indiana University and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Germany. Kathryn was a finalist in the American Bach Soloist Competition and has appeared as a soloist with

Jackie Moran (drums) was born in Tipperary, the son of an accordion player. Ten-year-old Jackie and his family immigrated to Chicago where he quickly began drumming with the best players in the Irish music scene. The young boy became the man who is preeminent in Chicago Irish music. Jackie’s talents have also led him to appear on stage with “Riverdance,” and to help form and perform with the Trinity Irish Dance Company. And when Hollywood needs a musician to play the part, and look it as well, you’ll see Jackie. “Backdraft” (1991), “Blink” (1993), “Traveler” (1997) and “The Road to Perdition” (2002) all saw fit to feature Jackie and his Bodhrán. Living just outside of Chicago with his wife, Amy, and their daughters, Caroline and Sophie, Jackie also teaches the Bodhrán – and makes them, too!

Sue Richards (harp) is a collector of tunes, mostly Celtic and Scandinavian.

She has played the harp, both pedal and Celtic, since childhood, and found it to be the perfect instrument for her passion. To this end, she has won the Scottish Harp North Central College 15

Society of America championship four times, studied and taught in Scotland, Ireland and Wales, and recorded with many friends; a natural outgrowth of a good party or session. She has sat in with The Chieftains and played for President and Mrs. Clinton. She also performs with HEN harp duo and Harp and Fool with mime Mark Jaster. Her solo recordings are on the Maggie’s Music label.

Carolyn Anderson Surrick (viola da gamba) started performing early music professionally at age 14. At the ripe old age of 16, she took up the viola da gamba and never looked back. While working on her BA in music at UCSC, she became the first student director of the early music ensemble, and then as a graduate student at George Washington University, she directed the instrumental ensemble for their early music consort.

In 1990, she started the Music in the Great Hall Series in her hometown of Annapolis, Maryland bringing some of the finest early music and traditional music to the city. She also founded Ensemble Galilei that year and her official title has always been navigatrix – which refers to her uncanny ability to dream up cool things for the group to do, and then make them happen. Over the years she has recorded for Dorian, Maggie’s Music, Telarc, and NPR Classics.

She loves her work.

Neal Conan (narrator) is the host of “Talk of the Nation,” the national news-talk call-in show from NPR News. Conan brings three decades of news and radio experience to the show, which reaches nearly three million listeners a week on more than 300 NPR member stations.

A familiar voice on NPR for the past quarter century, Conan has worked as a reporter based in New York, Washington, D.C. and London. He served as NPR’s Bureau Chief in both New York and London and anchored NPR live coverage of events including national political conventions, inaugurations, and an impeachment. For five years, he hosted 16 North Central College

Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Conan played a major role anchoring NPR’s continuous live coverage, a part he reprised during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2004, in Des Moines, Iowa, he hosted the first radio-only presidential candidates’ debate since 1948.

On the other side of the microphone, Conan has also served as editor, producer, and executive producer of NPR’s flagship evening newsmagazine, “All Things Considered” and, at various times, acted as NPR’s foreign editor, managing editor, and news director.

Conan’s awards include a Major Armstrong award for his coverage of the Iran-Iraq War, a prestigious Alfred I. du Pont-Columbia University award as part of NPR’s coverage of the Gulf War, another du Pont and a George Foster Peabody Award for his part in NPR’s coverage of Sept. 11 and yet another du Pont for NPR’s coverage of the war in Iraq. During his time at “All Things Considered,” the program won numerous awards, including the Washington Journalism Review’s Best in the Business award.

During the 2001 baseball season, Conan took a leave of absence from NPR News to work as the play-by-play announcer for the Aberdeen Arsenal of the independent Atlantic League. He filed a series of commentaries about life on the fringe of professional sports for “Morning Edition” and later wrote a book about his experiences, “Play By Play: Baseball, Radio and Life in the Last Chance League.”

Conan was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1949.

In an earlier season, he toured with the Lucerne Festival Strings appearing at the Kimmel Center, Philadelphia,

Kennedy Center in D.C., Spivey Hall, Atlanta, Wortham Center in Houston, and Mechanics Hall near Boston. Other appearances during the last seasons included the Oregon Mozart Players, the Virginia, Knoxville, Evansville, Green Bay, Springfield, Missouri, Santa Fe, West Virginia, Key West, the Atlantic Classical and Valdosta symphonies.

T H E C UA R T E TO C A S A L S Since its founding at the Escuela Reina Sofia in Madrid under Professor Antonello Farulli in 1997, Cuarteto Casals has quickly become recognized as one of Europe’s most distinguished string quartets. This Spanish ensemble has garnered extensive critical acclaim and has won top prizes at many international competitions, including first prizes at the 2000 London and the 2002 Johannes Brahms International String Quartet Competitions. In 2005, the ensemble was honored with the prize of the City of Barcelona, in 2006 received the National Music Award - the highest distinction for musicians in Spain, and in 2008, was chosen for the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in England.

Upcoming and recent activities include performances at the Wigmore Hall and Barbican Center (London), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall (New York), Philharmonie and Konzerthaus (Berlin), Library of Congress (Washington, D.C.), Konzerthaus and Musikverein (Wien), Philharmonie (Cologne), Chatelet and Cité de la Musique (Paris) and tours throughout Europe, the United States, South America, Russia and Japan, as well as appearances at the Salzburger Festspiele and Lucerne, White Nights, Santa Fe, Bantry, City of London, SchleswigHolstein, and Kuhmo festivals. The Cuarteto Casals residency at the Auditori in Barcelona, where it now performs an annual series of concerts, has been met with tremendous critical approbation and audience support. Cuarteto Casals records exclusively for Harmonia Mundi, which recently released its sixth album, featuring the complete string quartets “Opus 33” of Joseph Haydn. In 2008, they released an album featuring the quartets and piano quintet of Johannes Brahms, preceded by “Influencías” in 2007, juxtaposing the quartet of Maurice Ravel with those of his Spanish contemporaries Joaquin Turnia and Eduard Toldrá. The quartet has worked with important composers in Europe today, premiering works

by Jordi Cervelló, David del Puerto and Jesús Rueda of Spain, collaborating with James MacMillan of Scotland, and György Kurtág of Hungary, and at the composer’s request, recording Christian Lauba’s quartet “Morphing.” Cuarteto Casals has performed quintets with renowned musicians including Elizabeth Leonskaja, Oleg Maisenberg, Claudio Martinez Mehner, Christophe Coin, Thomas Riebl, and Michael Collins and has been heard frequently on the radio and in live concert broadcasts from the Spanish National Radio, Radio France, Deutschland Radio, WDR, NDR, SWR, RAI, NPR and the BBC and seen on television throughout Spain and Germany. Cuarteto Casals is currently in residence at the leading conservatory in Barcelona, and has been profoundly influenced by intensive studies with Professors Walter Levin and Rainer Schmidt, as well as by graduate work in Cologne under the Alban Berg Quartet and Harald Schoneweg.

A prizewinner at many competitions, Vera won First Prize and Special Prize for Interpretation of a Classical Work at the Kloster Schöntal competition in 1995 and Second Prize at the

Wieniawsky competition in Poland in 1997. As a soloist, she has appeared with various orchestras including the Symphony Orchestras of Palma de Mallorca, Santo Domingo, and the Chamber Orchestras Andrés Segovia and the Escuela Superior Reina Sofia, under the batons of conductors including Zubin Mehta, Yehudi Menuhin, James Judd, Victor Pablo and Antoni Ros Marbá. In addition, Vera has performed in the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and collaborated in chamber music concerts with artists such as Gérard Caussé, Harald Schoneweg, Marta Gulyás and Claudio Martínez Mehner.

Jonathan Brown, viola Jonathan Brown was born in Chicago in 1974 and began to play the violin at age four. He first played the viola as a chamber musician at age 12 and began to study properly at the University of Illinois with Michael McClelland. After studying at the Eastman School of Music with Heidi Castleman, Jonathan received his Bachelor’s Degree from Rice University, where he studied with Martha Strongin Katz. He received a Master’s Degree from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Karen Tuttle and was the recipient of a Beebe

Foundation Grant to work at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Thomas Riebl and Veronika Hagen. Jonathan was greatly influenced by master classes with Ferenc Rados, Andras Schiff, Donald Weilerstein, Miriam Fried, Rainer Schmidt, Diemut Poppen and Victoria Chiang.

Jonathan has been invited to participate in many festivals, including the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove, La Loigntaine, the Steans Institute at Ravinia, the Taos School of Chamber Music, Yellow Barn and the Aspen Music Festival.

He has collaborated as guest violist with the Miro and Zemlinsky quartets, Kandinsky Trio and has performed the complete cycle of Mozart Viola Quintets with the Kuss Quartet of Germany. Jonathan spent a season playing with the Camerata Salzburg and previously appeared as principal viola of the Juilliard Orchestra and New Juilliard Ensemble.

Jonathan served as Teaching Assistant to Thomas Riebl in Salzburg and is now Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya. Arnau Tomás Realp, cello Anau Tomás Realp was born in Barcelona in 1973 and began his musical studies at the age of six. From 1990 through 1994, he studied in Holland at the Utrecht Conservatory with Elias Arizcuren, after which he studied with Ivan Monighetti at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia and the Musikakademie der Stadt North Central College 23

Arnau won First Prize at the competitions Germans Claret (1990), City of Manresa (1996), and Juventudes Musicales de España (1996). Additionally, he won Second Prize at the Jonge Talenten de Holand competition in 1991 and was selected in 1992 by the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam to participate in a nationally televised master class with Yo Yo Ma. Arnau has been invited to serve as Guest Principal Cellist in orchestras including the RNE in Madrid and the Symphony Orchestra of Galicia, and has performed with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the European Community Chamber Orchestra and the Conjunto Ibérico de Violonchelos. In addition to numerous recitals, he has performed as a soloist with the London Schools Symphony, the Orquestra Filarmonia de Cambra de Barcelona, the Orquesta de Radiotelevisión Española and the Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona and Catalunya. Arnau has also recorded a CD of works for cello solo by Bach, Cassadó and Kôdaly.

Abel Tomas Realp, violin Abel Tomas Realp was born in 1980 and began to play the violin at the age of four.
