FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR In this last 35th Anniversary Season, 2009-10, we at Northlight took great pains to refresh our mission and to look forward towards the next 35 years. The heart of the mission articulates our desire to “promote change and to encourage compassion, through a broad range of theatrical experiences… to bring the world to our community and our community to the world.” Certainly this new season’s selections embody these aspirations. Daddy Long Legs began its life as a novel in 1912 and has had a long and varied journey in several disciplines, becoming a Broadway play, a silent film, and a movie musical. It arrives at Northlight as a re-envisioned new musical directed and created by the Tony and Olivier Award-winning John Caird and Tony-nominated composer Paul Gordon. Its charm and intimacy, winningly performed by Megan McGinnis and Robert Adelman Hancock, calls to mind many of the small and personal musicals that we have produced here at Northlight in our 35-year history. Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel’s A Civil War Christmas examines America at a defining moment in American history, when the country emerged from the heartache of war to begin the long and slow march towards tolerance and a national re-examination of our values, the process of which continues today. Eclipsed by Danai Gurira gives us a glimpse of the lives of women in another civil war, Liberia. The struggle to emerge from the oppression of a male-dominated, tribal society provides a riveting and ultimately uplifting theatrical event. Through the power of their mutual support, communal strength and resilience, these extraordinary women provide a glimpse of a community thousands of miles away, yet nearer than we might think. Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility remains a favorite of Austen fans worldwide, and will be brought to life at Northlight in a world premiere adaptation by Jon Jory. While the repression of Austen’s time seems perhaps quaint and provides dramatic tension and even comic relief to our modern society, the “mating ritual” it portrays has its own sense of barbarism when reflected off Eclipsed’s harsher and more modern cruelty. The Outgoing Tide by Bruce Graham is the story of one man’s determination to resolve his life with dignity, facing the past with his wife and son and attempting, in his clumsy way, to make amends before it all becomes too inevitable. Impossibly funny and powerfully heart wrenching, it will stir debate and raise questions that so many of us are either facing or will face in the coming years. PROGR AM NOTES Dear Audience, Nearly a century after Jean Webster first published Daddy Long Legs in 1912, the art of letter-writing has all but reached extinction; the digital age of computer correspondence and text-messaging has all but replaced pen and paper. Yet Webster’s story has been revived once more, springing forth from its epistolary (letter-writing) form into a delightfully intimate musical by John Caird and Paul Gordon. Over the course of the last century, Daddy Long Legs has not only been faithfully retold in its period context, but it has been able to embrace new mediums and conventions of a changing world, as evinced in countless adaptations. Webster’s classic has been told silently on film, through the jazzy dance steps of Fred Astaire, and in the colorful graphics of Japanese animation. Her enduring tale of a young woman finding independence and romance has proved throughout the ages to be personal and inspiring. Though Webster is best known for Daddy Long Legs, she had previously published six novels, all largely drawing upon her own experiences and humanitarian efforts. Our heroine, Jerusha, follows a similar literary journey as her author; after years of attempts at penning her own masterpiece, she finally reaches enlightenment: “I’ve caught the secret… you are most convincing when you write about the things you know.” While all of Webster’s novels have autobiographical roots, Jerusha is most like Webster, making her way in the world of literature and economics at Vassar College while aspiring to write the Great American Novel. The first of many adaptations of Daddy Long Legs started with Webster herself. After encouraging response from critics and readers alike, she took the initiative to adapt Daddy Long Legs for the stage in 1915. Unlike the novel, which is comprised entirely of letters from Jerusha to Jervis, her mysterious patron, the play allows us to hear Jervis’ point of view. The production also inspired the audience to become more like Jervis – a campaign was organized linking charities and college groups in the name of the play to help raise money for orphans. In one of the first Broadway merchandising endeavors, a line of Judy (Jerusha) Abbott dolls was manufactured to help raise funds for the cause. The Broadway play’s cultural and economic sensation fueled the first three film adaptations in 1919, 1931 and the classic movie musical in 1955, starring Mary Pickford, Shirley Temple and Fred Astaire, respectively. The resonant themes persist today, crossing oceans to find success as both a Japanese animated series in 1990 (Watashi No Ashinaga Ojisa) and a Korean film in 2005 (Kidari Ajeossi). In this most recent adaptation, the same base plot thrives in the more complex modern world of radio broadcasting. The anonymous dogooder in this version gives Jerusha an unbelievable position at the Northlight Theatre 5
P R O G R A M N O T E ( c o n t .) radio station, making her dream come true; gratefully, she reads her letters to Daddy on the air. Perhaps it is the complexity of the world today that has sparked a need to introduce the story to a new audience. Although it was not Webster’s original intent, Daddy Long Legs was largely received as a children’s book in its time, due in part to the countless comical doodles she used to illustrate. And while many adaptations have chosen to highlight the mature aspects of a relationship shrouded in mystery, a child-like simplicity persists in each retelling of the novel. Essentially, through means of charity, love, higher education and artistic achievement, Jerusha’s story is simply one of finding happiness when it seems impossible. Our Jerusha will sing tonight, “I’ve discovered the secret of happiness is living in the now. Living in the time it takes to blink I think is how we’re meant to be living.” This revelation is what carries Webster’s story through nearly one hundred years and will no doubt carry it through a hundred more when the notion of putting pen to paper may be nothing but a distant memory. Ms. Bergquist was the original Musical Director for Jane Eyre (the first John Caird and Paul Gordon collaboration) and has worked regionally in theatres including Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Rubicon, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Music Theatre of Wichita, Stage One and Theatre of Stars, as well as at New York’s The Old Globe Theatre for Emma. For my mother-in-law Mildred Bergquist who lived in an Oklahoma orphanage from age 4 to age 18 and blessed the world with her charity, faith and spirit until age 93. Brad Haak (Music Supervisor, Co-Orchestrator) is delighted to return to Northlight Theatre. Cecil Averett (Sound Design) has designed sound and composed music for theater, film, multimedia and civic installations. He is also a software designer and co-founder of cs|designgroup, a production and multimedia design company. Some of his regional theater credits include The Marvelous Wonderettes and Grey Gardens at Northlight, Passion Play at the Goodman, and productions at Arena Stage, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, and Marriott Lincolnshire. Other recent designs include the off-Broadway production of Beyond Glory at Roundabout, and Cap21’s premiere of Waiting for My Man, also off-Broadway. Mr. Averett was the recipient of an AfterDark Award (original music) for his work on Eclipse Theatre’s production of Frame 312 as well as a Joseph Jefferson Award nominee for sound design of Passion Play. Rita Vreeland (Production Stage Manager) is delighted to be collaborating once again with the talented people at Northlight. Previous Northlight stage management credits include Low Down Dirty Blues, Awake and Sing!, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, Mauritius, Grey Gardens, The Miser and Gee’s Bend. Evans (Northlight Executive Director) joined Northlight Theatre as Executive Director in 2007 and since his arrival overseen the Theatre’s new branding campaign, Leadership fundraising campaign, new board development, revamped arts education initiatives and a five year strategic plan with McKinsey & Company. Prior to his arrival at Northlight, Tim spent a 20-plus year career at Steppenwolf Theatre where he served in management and producing positions. He created, curated and produced Steppenwolf’s acclaimed TRAFFIC Series which included a partnership with Chicago Public Radio for subsequent broadcasts. Tim founded Steppenwolf Films, of which he is still a partner with Gary Sinise, Terry Kinney and Jeff Perry, to develop feature film and television projects including the comedy Diminished Capacity with Matthew Broderick and the recently completed independent film The Last Rites of Joe May. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the League of Chicago Theatres, previously served on the board of the Independent Film Project (IFP) and was a charter member of the Governor’s Task Force for Media Development. Tim is a graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.

A B O U T N O R T H L I G H T T H E AT R E Northlight Theatre, located just north of Chicago in suburban Skokie, IL, has mounted more than 160 productions, including nearly 40 world premieres in its 35 year history. It has grown into the fourth largest nonprofit theatre in the Chicago area with nearly 8000 subscribers, serving audiences totaling nearly 60,000. Northlight is an award-winning theatre (three Edgerton Foundation for New American Plays awards, and 151 nominations and 27 awards from Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Committee) with an excellent local and national reputation. With dynamic leadership from Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Tim Evans, Northlight’s produces five mainstage productions each year, workshops and readings of new works, audience outreach to Veterans and many other groups, and a comprehensive arts education program. The North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie opened in 1996 and operates as part of the Village of Skokie’s plan to provide cultural, literary, and educational programs, benefiting the citizens of Skokie and the North Shore communities. Three resident cultural organizations Centre East, Northlight Theatre, and the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra, call the center home. The North Shore Center is perfect for performances, social occasions and corporate events.
