FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR One of the tenets of Northlight’s mission is to “bring the world to our community and our community to the world,” which led us to Danai Gurira’s award-winning work. Eclipsed is a story of war-torn Liberia, which struggled through two brutal civil wars that claimed the lives of one out of every seventeen people in the country, uprooted much of the rest of the population and destroyed an economic infrastructure.

The remarkable thing about Eclipsed is that – despite the bleakness of the world the women live in – the central characters, five extraordinary women, display such resilience and selfreliance, that their capability to form a family in the face of tremendous adversity is both uplifting and spiritually nourishing.

These unique women attempted to find various means of survival rather than succumb to the horrifying truth of war. It is fascinating that many Liberian women fought in the war but eventually became peacekeepers. The role of women in the country became further pronounced with the election of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in 2005.

The North Shore of Chicago is geographically distant from Liberia, but we are privileged to share a community with many people of the African Diaspora. We are very proud to present Danai’s work to Chicago, the spirit of which should provide reflection and inspiration for all of us.

-BJ Jones PROGR AM NOTES Lipstick Traces in Post-Apocalyptic Realms Lieutenant Colonel Mervin Willett Gonin described the horrific condition of the 1945 liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He expressed how the British soldiers felt they were witnesses rather than saviors because of their inability to immediately improve the conditions of the camp and provide the necessary relief for its liberated prisoners. Enraged, the Lieutenant Colonel articulated his initial dismay when the British soldiers opened a box from the British Red Cross to find it filled with fire engine red lipstick. He wrote of how his troops were “screaming for hundreds and thousands” of other more important items.

And then, the Lieutenant Colonel realized the sheer genius of this seemingly ignorant and indecent error: women, still in soiled blankets and rags, began to wander around the nightmarish camp with a sense of forgotten dignity and humanity rediscovered through their now scarlet-hued lips. They were no longer only the numbers tattooed on their arms, but once again women.

Less than a decade ago, the tactic of women embracing gendered tokens such as lipstick, heels, and lingerie provided not only a sense of hope but was wielded as a polemic weapon of war. In 2003, vivid images of Women’s Artillery Commandos (WAC), a group of female Liberian rebel fighters, splashed across the global presses. Pubescent and young lady-killers sporting tight colorful tops and blue jeans, well-coiffed braids and corn rows, roamed the Monrovian streets with AK-47s and M-16s slung faithfully by their sides. With deadly hardware and street-wise girl power attitudes, fighters – like female Commander Black Diamond – attributed their strength and success to their ability to transform victimization into rage into bravery via rebellion.

Throughout both the first (1989-1996) and second (1999-2003) Liberian Civil Wars women held a strong combatant presence. With over 250,000 casualties and more than two million Liberians displaced, women comprised 10 to 30% of the armed forces. The media gravitated toward these narratives of contradiction – fashionable, strong, beautiful black women of the WAC spreading fear and seeking retribution in the Liberian capital. For most Liberian women the bifurcation between warrior and victim was far more elastic; many navigated their circumstances based upon the most likely path toward survival.

In the Liberian war zone, women served as soldiers at one moment and as submissive girlfriends the next. Some women attempted to juggle relationships with lovers, commanders, co-wives, peacekeepers, and soldiers with the omnipresent possibility of harm. A series of studies conducted by the United Nations on the effects of war on women’s physical and mental health confirm that women and children involved in armed conflict, as well as refugee situations, suffer from a far greater risk of assault and violence than men.

Women often lack the mobility to flee conflict zones because of the challenge of moving their children and extended families. And women’s bodies also serve as battlegrounds when rape, forced pregnancies, slavery, and sexual servitude become accepted and brutal tactics of engagement. Furthermore, the effects of physical trauma can perpetuate psychological trauma. 44% percent of Liberian families, primarily matriarchal households, suffered from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). In addition, the rate of suicide during the civil wars was extremely high in women victimized by sexual violence.

Another role in which women often find themselves during war is that of peacekeeper; women across the globe serve as the primary peacekeepers, particularly on the field. Approximately 40% of the International Committee for the Red Cross is female. Women are involved in every act of peacekeeping assistance including caring for the wounded, visiting prisoners of war, and promoting humanitarian law and organizations. In addition, nonpartisan women’s organizations often serve the immediate dietary, health, and physical welfare needs in areas of armed conflict when foreign governments cannot, due to lack of geographic proximity and challenging international political relations. Or, as in the case of rebel leader Black Diamond, women who served in the military or as military sympathizers join NGOs such as “Young Women for the Betterment of Liberia,” an organization of 300 female ex-fighters empowering themselves through vocational activities to rebuild the country.

Although Black Diamond’s political leanings changed, she remained faithful to her dress of a tight red top, blue jeans, and well-coiffed braids. She, like the liberated women of Bergen-Belsen and scores of other women in various war zones throughout history, retained a sense of pride, dignity and humanity in situations that seemed devoid of any such ideals.

Liberia: An Abridged Timeline 1820 The first American Colonization Society (ACS) ship sails for Africa, bringing freed American slaves for “resettlement” in their “homeland.”

1824 ACS dubs the re-settlement zone on the West African coast “Liberia” (derived from “Liberty”). They choose a capital city, Monrovia, named for President Monroe.

1841 Due to the death of white ACS agents, black settlers gain control of Liberia.

1884 Hilary R.W. Johnson becomes the first Liberia-born president.

1945 A constitutional amendment extends suffrage to women.

1980 On April 12, seventeen non-commissioned officers in the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) stage a military coup, assassinating President Tolbert and creating a “revolutionary” military government, the People’s Redemption Council (PRC), with Samuel K. Doe as head of state. Foreign investors withdraw 90% of their investments from the Liberian economy in response to Doe’s violent coup.

1984 Under the banner of the newly-formed National Democratic Party of Liberia (NDPL), Doe is elected president of the Second Republic of Liberia with 50.9% of the popular vote, and his government soon begins a campaign of violence against Gio/Mande tribes.

1987-8 After providing Doe with more than $20 million in military assistance, the United States withdraws its aid from Liberia, causing the economy to falter.

Liberia becomes the focus of the international human rights community.

1989 Charles Taylor and the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) begin their insurgency against Doe and attack government posts in Nimba County, thus beginning the Great War (First Liberian Civil War).

1997 As a member of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), Charles Taylor wins the presidential election (70%). The first Liberian Civil War ends.

1999 A large rebel movement calling themselves Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) comes from Sierra Leone and seizes most of Lofa County. In response, Taylor restructures the military and has approximately 21,000 troops, at least 4,000 of whom are children under the age of 15. Fighting breaks out, and the Second Civil War begins.

2001 On May 5, thousands of women march to the UN office in Monrovia and demand international intervention in the conflict.

2002 On February 5, Charles Taylor declares a State of Emergency, and many flee Monrovia as the LURD troops encroach.

2003 By April, more than 80% of Liberia is under LURD control. A second armed group, Movement for Democracy in Liberia (MODEL) appears to oppose Taylor’s forces. In August, Taylor resigns as president and flees to Nigeria.

2005 Thirteen nominees compete for the Liberian presidency. Ellen JohnsonSirleaf, whose career included tenures at CitiBank, World Bank and the UN Development Programme Administration, and who endured imprisonment under earlier political regimes, receives a decisive victory on November 8.

2006 On March 29, Charles Taylor is charged with crimes against humanity.

2009 President Sirleaf signs a bill legalizing the death penalty into law. The law allows executions in cases involving armed robbery, rape, terrorism, and hijacking.

2010 Charles Taylor’s trial resumes in January. Verdict is expected in 2011.

PROFILES Alana Arenas (Helena) recently appeared in The Etiquette of Vigilance and The Brother/Sister Plays at Steppenwolf and The Arabian Nights at Lookingglass Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and Kansas City Repertory Theater. She joined the Steppenwolf ensemble in 2007 and created the role of Pecola Breedlove for the Steppenwolf for Young Adults production of The Bluest Eye, which also played at the New Victory Theater Off-Broadway.

Other theatre credits include The Tempest, The Crucible, Spare Change and The Sparrow Project (Steppenwolf); Black Diamond (Lookingglass); Eyes (ETA); SOST (MPAACT); WVON (Black Ensemble Theater); and Hecuba (Chicago Shakespeare Theater).

Television and film credits include The Beast and Kabuku Rides. She is originally from Miami where she began her training at the New World School of the Arts. Alana holds a BFA from the Theatre School at DePaul.

Tamberla Perry (Maima) is thrilled to be making her Northlight Theatre debut on such a profound piece of work, Eclipsed.

She was last seen in Steppenwolf Theatre’s First Look production The North Plan.

Paige Collins (The Girl) is excited to be working with Northlight, where she just recently understudied A Civil War Christmas.

Around Chicago, she’s been seen most recently in Hunting and Gathering (Theatre Seven of Chicago) and The Twins Would Like to Say (Dog and Pony Theatre). She holds a BFA from the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign where she was seen in (Anon)ymous, Necessary Targets, and In the Continuum.

She’s proud to be working on such an inspiring piece of theatre.

Kristin Leahey (Production Dramaturg) serves as the Resident Dramaturg at Northlight Theatre. Before joining Northlight, she acted as the Literary Manager at Woolly Mammoth in Washington, DC, where she dramaturged Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play and Bruce Norris’ Clybourne Park, among others.

She’s worked with Ms. Gurira on her trilogy on Zimbabwe and most recently, on the first part of the trilogy, The Convert, for the Goodman’s New Stages Series.

Some of her dramaturgical credits include works produced at the Kennedy Center, Indiana Repertory Theatre, The Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, The Goodman Theatre, Collaboraction, Teatro Luna, Teatro Vista, Eclipse Theatre, and A Red Orchid Theatre. She is a Ph.D. candidate at The University of Texas at Austin, where she is a recipient of an Endowed Fellowship. Her publications include articles in Theatre Topics, Theatre History, and Theatre Studies, and she has taught in the theatre department at The University of Texas at Austin and at DePaul University.

Danai Gurira (Playwright) is a playwright and actor. She was the recipient of a TCG New Generations travel grant for her play Eclipsed, which received premiere productions at Woolly Mammoth, Center Theater Group and Yale Repertory Theater. She co-created and performed in the award-winning two-woman play In the Continuum, for which she won an Obie Award, the Outer Critics John Gassner Award, the Global Tolerance Award (Friends of the United Nations), a Helen Hayes Award for Best Lead Actress, and was honored by the Theatre Hall of Fame. Theater’s production of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Films include The Visitor, 3 Backyards, My Soul to Keep and Restless City. She has taught playwriting and acting in Liberia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, and is currently completing a historical Zimbabwean piece entitled The Convert (a commission with TCG).

She received her MFA in acting from Tisch, NYU. Danai was born in the U.S. to Zimbabwean parents and raised in Zimbabwe.

BJ Jones (Artistic Director) is in his 12th year as Artistic Director of Northlight Theatre, where he has piloted the world premieres of Craig Wright’s Lady, Better Late (by Larry Gelbart & Craig Wright), Rounding Third, Sky Girls and Cat Feet. As a producer, he guided the world premieres of Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years, The Gamester, and Studs Terkel’s ‘The Good War.’ Mr. Jones has directed at Cherry Lane in NYC, Steppenwolf, Intiman Theatre in Seattle, Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre, The Utah Shakespearean Festival, The Asolo Theatre in Sarasota, and Next Theatre in Evanston.

Directorial work includes Northlight’s Grey Gardens, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Lady with All the Answers, The Retreat From Moscow, A Skull in Connemara, The Cripple of Inishmaan, and An Experiment With an Airpump, as well as productions of A Number, Twelfth Night, Glengarry Glen Ross (Suzie Bass Nominee - Best Director), Pygmalion, The Price (Jeff Nomination - Best Director), and 100 Saints You Should Know.

A two-time Jeff Award winner, he has appeared at Northlight in dozens of productions and has performed at virtually every major theatre in Chicago, including The Goodman in The Guys and House and Garden, Steppenwolf in The Royal Family and Playboy of the Western World, and Court in Candide and Comedy of Errors. Timothy J. Evans (Executive Director) joined Northlight Theatre as Executive Director in 2007 and since his arrival has overseen the Theatre’s new branding campaign, Leadership fundraising campaign, new board development, revamped arts education initiatives and a five year strategic plan with McKinsey & Company. Prior to his arrival at Northlight, Tim spent a 20plus year career at Steppenwolf Theatre where he served in management and producing positions. He created, curated and produced Steppenwolf’s acclaimed TRAFFIC Series which included a partnership with Chicago Public Radio for subsequent broadcasts. Tim founded Steppenwolf Films, of which he is still a partner with Gary Sinise, Terry Kinney and Jeff Perry, to develop feature film and television projects including the comedy Diminished Capacity with Matthew Broderick and the recently completed independent film The Last Rites of Joe May. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the League of Chicago Theatres, previously served on the board of the Independent Film Project (IFP) and was a charter member of the Governor’s Task Force for Media Development. Tim is a graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, IN.

A B O U T N O R T H L I G H T T H E AT R E Northlight Theatre, located just north of Chicago in suburban Skokie, IL, has mounted more than 160 productions, including nearly 40 world premieres in its 36 year history. It has grown into the fourth largest nonprofit theatre in the Chicago area with nearly 8,000 subscribers, serving audiences approaching 60,000. Northlight is an award-winning theatre (three Edgerton Foundation for New American Plays awards, and 145 nominations and 27 awards from Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Committee) with an excellent local and national reputation. With dynamic leadership from Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Tim Evans, Northlight’s $3.5 million operating budget supports five mainstage productions each year, workshops and readings of new works, audience outreach to Veterans and many other groups, and a comprehensive arts education program.
