Northlight Theatre 3
FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR This season Northlight celebrates the theatre in all its forms. In a time when the arts are struggling to find funding in our schools, and museums, dance companies, and theatres seek supporters to keep their disciplines vibrant and vital, we at Northlight have chosen a season that reminds us why we go to the theatre: to see ourselves at our best, overcoming adversity, and embracing the human journey with humor and fearlessness. It reminds us that through the arts (and theatre in particular) we can share each other’s vulnerability with compassion and understanding. The music of Stephen Schwartz kicks off 2011-12 in Snapshots. Combining some of Schwartz’s best-loved with his less familiar works, Snapshots is a new tale of mid-life challenges and renewal. The soaring lyricism of Broadway’s master composer weaves the moving story of a couple whose son has headed off to college and left them alone to ponder their future together. Snapshots is a tuneful journey that will strike you as both fresh and familiar. Alan Ayckbourn, England’s most prolific playwright, twists the family Christmas we all look forward to (and secretly dread) in his holiday classic, Season’s Greetings. Hilarious and resonant, Season’s Greetings is Ayckbourn at his best, taking familiar tropes and turning them on their heads. Northlight favorite E. Faye Butler returns in Black Pearl Sings! Heartbreaking and stirring, Black Pearl Sings! is the story of a woman whose treasure trove of indigenous music is the key to her freedom from prison and the pathway to finding her long-lost daughter. Butler again reveals her extraordinary acting chops and stunning voice on the Northlight stage. Ten Chimneys tells the backstage story of celebrated Broadway couple Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, who reigned for decades on the Great White Way and defined what it meant to be a Broadway Star. Set in their home in Genesee Depot, Wisconsin, Ten Chimneys is the story of their passion for each other and the theatre. Frequent collaborator Jeffrey Hatcher brings Ten Chimneys home to Northlight in this funny and moving showbiz tale. Finally, [title of show] is a hilarious glimpse at the making of a musical for a festival of musicals. A true insider’s story, it makes the process of putting together a musical from the ground up accessible to everyone. Funny and informative, [title of show] is a delightfully uplifting journey that gives voice to the dreams of a musical’s creators and their yearning for success. What really sets this piece apart is that it followed the story inside and out and actually ended up on Broadway! In a time when we all are searching for healing and refreshment, the theatre offers a few hours of joy and thoughtful reflection that only the collective theatrical experience can afford. We’re grateful you’re here. -BJ Jones 4 Northlight Theatre
PROGR AM NOTES
Stephen Schwartz’s Snapshots : Interview by Resident Dramaturg Kristin Leahey
KRISTIN LEAHEY: Since Snapshots includes a diverse repertoire of your musical work, how did you select what songs to use? STEPHEN SCHWARTZ: Snapshots tells a story about the rites of passage in the life of a couple. The narrative helped us determine which songs to use, rather than just choosing the most popular or well-known, though we of course include some of those. As the story developed and became more compelling, it was clear that one simply couldn’t just lift songs from the original musicals with their existing lyrics. Many of the lyrics had to be adjusted just as if I were writing a new show, which I think makes this project unique. KL: Would you compare it to any other style or form of musical, or do you feel that this is new terrain? SS: To my knowledge, I don’t think this has been done before, and it’s what makes this show a curious hybrid. That why it’s called a “musical scrapbook,” as opposed to a revue or a book musical. There have certainly been many compilation revues of composers’ work and there have also been many instances when there has been an attempt to take a composer’s work and interpolate songs into a new storytelling structure, but I don’t know of another one where the original songwriter revised the lyrics in order to try to further the storytelling. KL: When you’re approaching new work, where do you locate the subject matter? SS: My initial response to whether or not I want to work on something is instinctive. I come across an idea or an idea is suggested to me, and it sparks something that makes me think, “That sounds like a world I want to be in for a while.” It really is a visceral and instinctive reaction. Then while I’m working, I may come to realize why the subject matter interested me in the first place. For example, I found I had a lot in common with the character of Elphaba from Wicked. Usually, as any writer will tell you, there’s something in the story or in a character that resonates in one’s own life. But that’s not always immediately apparent. KL: You’ve done so much work in Chicago. What excites you about bringing this piece to the Midwest? SS: I’ve often said I think Chicago is the best theatre town in America. Chicago audiences are very supportive of new work. They are positive audiences. Not to say that they’re going to like everything or that they’ve liked everything of mine, but I find the attitude towards theatre in Chicago is an overall encouraging one. Plus, there’s a huge talent pool of theatre-makers! I like how theatre functions in Chicago. Northlight Theatre 5
