PROGRAM NOTES FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR I’ll admit it. I am the last guy in America to experience The Odd Couple. Until George Wendt, Tim Kazurinsky and I talked about it, I had never read it, nor seen the play, the film or the TV show. When the opportunity came up to work with these guys, bringing George back to Northlight for the first time since Rounding Third, I quickly got the play off my shelf and read it. I was surprised. The play premiered when I was in ninth grade, 1965. At that time, my theatre-going experience was limited to family trips to The Metropolitan Opera, when it visited, and Shakespeare at The Cleveland Play House. 1965 was a time of transition for America: President Kennedy was assassinated, Vietnam escalated to full-on war, the Civil Rights Act was signed into law, The Beatles arrived on Ed Sullivan, and Betty Friedan’s Feminine Mystique ushered in the second Wave of the Women’s Movement. The wheels of change began to turn. So last year, as I read The Odd Couple for the first time, I was delighted by its deft skill, not just of the comedy, which in Neil Simon’s hands is peerless, but of its sensitive humanity, craftsmanship and deep revelation of character. It occurred to me that these two men, who probably came of age in the 1950s and who were being shown the door by their wives, were likely oblivious to the swirl of personal growth and self-realization that was whipping around them. This play could not have existed had it not been for all of those surrounding elements. And when you see it afresh, as a snapshot of a shifting cultural moment captured by an extraordinary writer, it is a revelation. The Odd Couple is a classic, a mid-century icon. And while I may be one of the last to experience it, I think that’s going to be really useful. It will make me work harder to map out this journey, to find ways to activate it that will be refreshing and surprising for our audience. For me, and our cast, we hope to revitalize the play with a sharp eye on these characters’ flaws, and an open heart for their bumbling attempts to change. We hope to hit the refresh button on Simon’s seminal work, while paying homage to his brilliant career. And of course, there is no one better to do that with than George, Tim, Bruce, Marc, Bill, Phil, Molly, and Katherine – what a cast!

PROGRAM NOTES INTERVIEW WITH GEORGE WENDT AND TIM KAZURINSKY by Resident Dramaturg Kristin Leahey
KRISTIN LEAHEY: What attracted you to The Odd Couple? GEORGE WENDT: Most people, of all ages, have a familiarity with it, and the writing is textbook comedy. And the chance to work with Tim seals the deal because we have a long history together. God forbid, we were ever forced to live with each other; I’m sure there would be some similar tension as seen in The Odd Couple. TIM KAZURINSKY: We were together in the same cast at Second City and wanted to reunite again. Quite frankly, there are probably more laughs per square inch in this play than just about any play ever written. Also, we’re much too young for Simon’s The Sunshine Boys. KL: When else have you worked together? TK: I wrote the film for TV, Strange Relations, which George appeared in, and I was ever so glad for that. I saw him onstage in the London production of Yasmina Reza’s Art, and the producer of the film was with me. He said, “Boy! Wouldn’t George be great as the best friend for Paul Reiser in this movie?” And I said, “Yes! Why don’t I ask him?” It happened – thank God – it was wonderful! GW: With Second City, you say you leave but you never really leave. It’s like the Marines. They always bring you back; you’re on active reserve. We’ve been called up into service for various charity events, or corporate events, and outright theatrical gigs, like in Vienna. TK: We did a couple of weeks in Vienna, which was just a riot. We did The Cat Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny, Ireland a couple of times—we like to get together at the drop of a hat. GW: We played the Ravinia Festival with an interpretation of Casey at the Bat. During the 1980s with Second City, we played the Murray Theatre on evenings after the Chicago Symphony 6
| NORTHLIGHT THEATRE
for about an hour, so people could avoid the traffic. We followed the Chicago Symphony; or as we like to put it: the Chicago Symphony opened for us. KL: What do you think about the current state of Chicago theatre? TK: I think that there’s probably no better town for theatre in the world. It’s more accessible here than just about anyplace else, and more affordable. KL: How do you feel about improvising in comparison to performing in a straight play? TK: I think the best thing about it is, if you go up on your lines in a play, you don’t panic quite as much, as a result of improv training. Working at Second City, we did all sorts of work – dramatic, horror, some sentimental. We never say, “I’m a comedian,” or, “I’m a comic”—we’re actors above all, and writers. The improv training really taps into your writer skills because you’re writing on your feet. GW: Some of the very fundamental things, which are vital at Second City, are listening and focus: when you give focus and when you take focus. Both foster a strong ensemble. As a result, we’re generally good in an ensemble. KL: You’ve previously worked with many of the ensemble of The Odd Couple. TK: Bruce Jarchow was in our cast in 1978, and he’s playing Roy in the show, and we know Marc Grapey, who’s playing Murray, the cop. There’s something about that dysfunctional family of Second City, and the family feel of theatre in Chicago. You run into these people at weddings, funerals, circumcisions, Bar Mitzvahs…It’s a big family. KL: George, the last time you appeared at Northlight was in Rounding Third, yes? GW: I loved working on Rounding Third. The playwright Richard Dresser is just
PROGRAM NOTES Director BJ Jones and the cast of The Odd Couple at first rehearsal.
so funny and his work is really thoughtprovoking. And it was such a treat to work with BJ Jones, who is just a titan in the rehearsal hall. KL: Have either of you met Neil Simon? GW: I have, a couple of times! I couldn’t believe he knew who I was. He is very warm and genuine, and it blew me away just to be at a party with him. TK: I met Paul Simon. Not the singer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Illinois. GW: I think he actually played him, too. With the bow tie. KL: Do you think we’ve entered a new frontier of political satire with comic news programs such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report? TK: Well, at the Emmys, one of the acceptors for The Game Change, the Sarah Palin film, said that it’s hard to produce political satire on major networks. Cable shows such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report and Real Time with Bill Maher are able to be political. GW: Speaking of the networks: Saturday Night Live (SNL) does a pretty good job, lately, but it just occurred to me recently that they’re really playing with one hand tied behind their backs in terms of timing. If something happens on a Monday, by Saturday night Colbert and Stewart have chewed it up and spit it out so many times. Also with Conan O’Brien
and Jimmy Kimmel and David Letterman, so there’s almost nothing left for SNL. It’s kind of tough for them, really. KL: Tim, you just appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. TK: I did Midsummer and then Hairspray in Chicago. KL: Are you a singer? TK: No, I’m not. That was my first musical. But George did Hairspray on Broadway. GW: We can sing, we just don’t have proper Broadway stage singing voices. But as I always say, “We do what we’re told.” They say, “Hit this note,” and you do it. TK: I have a new desire to do Hairspray one time before I die with George as Edna and me as Wilbur, if you can ever get into high heels again. GW: You know, I don’t know if I have another Edna left in me. TK: If you do, I’m there, honey! GW: (sings) You’re timeless to me! TK: You’re timeless to me, babe. (both laugh)

He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the League of Chicago Theatres, previously served on the board of the Independent Film Project (IFP) and was a charter member of the Governor’s Task Force for Media Development.

“I want to thank you and your staff for your continuing excellence in programming and performing. Wish this check could be larger, but it does come with deep appreciation.” - Northlight Supporter
“Arts are the heart and soul of a community - the arts raise our consciousness, inspire our imaginations, feed our intellect, and expand our horizons. Northlight Theatre provides precisely this type of art.” - Northlight Supporter
“As we conclude our fourth subscription season, my wife and I would like to thank you for bringing quality theatre to our suburban setting. The variety and quality of your productions make us look forward to each performance.” - Northlight Supporter 18 | NORTHLIGHT THEATRE
As a professional, non-profit theatre, we are called to make great art, not make profits. And in order to do that, we must subsidize the cost of our work through philanthropy. Gifts support the artistic vision of Northlight, a vision for which ticket sales alone cannot provide. Supporting new work, being bold, taking risks . . . this is all part of producing great theatre. We are not driven by ticket sales but rather by a relentless pursuit of artistic excellence, for that is what defines great theatre. And that is what makes us Northlight.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE PRICE OF YOUR NORTHLIGHT TICKET COVERS JUST 60% OF THE TOTAL COST OF PUTTING A PRODUCTION ON OUR STAGE?
