Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital

The OAC is located at 641 E. Forest Street and is part of the Oconomowoc High School campus. It is located in the south central part of Oconomowoc immediately west of Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital, one block west of Summit Avenue (Hwy 67) which is the main north/south artery into the city.

Mission Statement

The Oconomowoc Arts Center mission is to provide patrons and artists of all ages, a professional, cultural and educational experience with the highest quality programming opportunities possible.

As we begin our 12th season of providing high quality programming I look back on the hard work, passion, and commitment from the Oconomowoc community to get us to where we are. I am thrilled and honored to take the helm from Michael Duncan, and can’t wait to work with and get to know all the staff, volunteers, patrons, donors, entertainers, artists, students, and teachers that make the OAC special. Our season is full of amazing entertainment and visual arts for everyone to enjoy, including eight Main Stage series shows, three Cabaret Café shows, 15 Special Events, and 22 Oconomowoc Area School District shows and concerts. In addition the OAC Lobby Art Gallery will host eight professional visual art displays, and the Imagine A Day Art Gallery will host seven student displays. Beyond that, the OAC provides a home to several district and community groups for ceremonies, services, educational programs, and more. I am looking forward to growing and learning in this remarkable and vibrant community. John Cramer Director, Oconomowoc Arts Center

OCONOMOWOC ARTS CENTER | 2019-2020 SEASON

OAC Info Please, No Food or Beverages are permitted in the theaters

Bringing Children

Where Can I Sit?

Parents are encouraged to contact the box office for information about the appropriateness of a given performance for younger children.

except for bottled water, with the cap on, or where allowed in the lobby area.

All 759 seats in the Neudecker Main Stage Theater offer excellent views and acoustics. Our box office can be of service with any questions you may have. The OAC is ADA compliant. We have a limited number of wheelchair accessible seats. Please let the box office representative know that you will need accessible seating at the time of purchase. Our circle driveway allows easy drop off and parking that is next to the front entrance. Wheelchair accessible doors and no steps to the front doors make entering and exiting simple. A gradual slope in the theater allows for easy and safe admittance.

Patrons are discouraged from bringing any child younger than the age of 6 to performances, unless that particular performance is geared toward or appropriate for younger audiences.

Booster Seats are available. Check with an usher for assistance, first-come-first-served. IF YOUR CHILDREN ATTEND A PERFORMANCE WITH YOU, A TICKET WILL NEED TO BE PURCHASED FOR THEM. There is NO lap seating for children. This includes children of all ages, including infants. In addition, parents are responsible to supervise their children when in the theater and lobby.

The Little Theater is also ADA compliant. Since this space is used for a variety of different set ups from general seating to a cabaret theater, the number of seats depends on the type of show. Again, the box office can answer any questions or aid you with accessibility concerns.

When to Arrive

It is recommended that patrons arrive approximately 20 minutes prior to the start of a performance. This allows for time to park, check your coat (a free service at the OAC), use of the restrooms, and finding your seat without feeling rushed.

Late Arrivals

Out of courtesy to the performers and audience, patrons arriving after the performance has begun will be seated at the discretion of house management – possibly not until intermission. Seat selection may not be available 1/2 hour prior to performances.

“I believe one way to judge the quality of any community is by its support for the Arts. The level of support for the Arts in Oconomowoc is obvious! The high caliber of our band, orchestra, and choral music, and theater programs in the District are enhanced by their ability to perform in that professional-caliber space. As superintendent, I never take that space for granted. I know perfectly well just how lucky we are. - Dr. Roger Rindo, Superintendent

Timeless music composed by the late Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, include “Maria,” “Tonight,” “America,” “Somewhere,” “I Feel Pretty,” “Gee, Officer Krupke,” and more.” From the first notes to the final breath, the world’s greatest love story takes to the streets in this dynamic production that is considered one of theatre’s finest accomplishments. “My first year at OHS has been wonderfully challenging. Teaching and directing in a new space is helping me to re-evaluate and hone my own skills. Working in the OAC with talented students and quality professionals at all levels has been fabulous! There is an impressive theatrical tradition at both OHS and the OAC which makes me feel blessed to be in this position.” - Tiersa Ferraro, OHS theater department director “It truly is a joy for me to be able to create music with students at Oconomowoc High School. The Oconomowoc Arts Center is a beautiful space to feature the high level of performance that our student musicians achieve through their study and rehearsal in curricular and co-curricular ensembles. I’m grateful for our district and community’s strong support for music and arts in our schools.” - Beth Kauffeld, OHS vocal and musical theater director

John McGivern opens the OAC’s 12th season with A Midsummer Night McGivern “Leave it to Milwaukee’s own John McGivern, a master storyteller, to package 90-minutes of his best ‘growing up during an East Side Milwaukee summer’ stories and perform them in front of an adoring audience.” Shepherd Express By Rebecca Seymour Emmy Award-winning actor, comedian, and master storyteller John McGivern will once again grace the Oconomowoc Arts Center’s Main Stage in A Midsummer Night McGivern at 7 p.m. Saturday, August 24. This is the fifth time the OAC has welcomed McGivern to its Main Stage as sold-out audiences can’t seem to get enough of his personal anecdotes and quirky reflections on bygone days and relatable experiences growing up in Wisconsin. A Midsummer Night McGivern promises an evening of amusing adventures and warm summer memories, as he takes his audience on a sweet trip down memory lane. Sharing childhood stories from Memorial Day to Labor Day and all the summer in between, McGivern offers touching references that we can all relate to. Best known for his Emmy Award-winning work on Milwaukee PBS, McGivern’s other one-man shows, The Wonder Bread Years, The Early Years of John McGivern, and Home for the Holidays tell stories of being the third born of six kids in a working-class Irish Catholic family in the Midwest. In 2017, McGivern helped celebrate the OAC’s 10th anniversary season as the character of Earlene Hoople in A Kodachrome Christmas.

OCONOMOWOC ARTS CENTER | 2019-2020 SEASON

McGivern’s latest project has been the critically acclaimed show Around the Corner with John McGivern on Milwaukee PBS, now in its eighth season. The City of Oconomowoc was featured in an episode in 2014. “As a kid growing up on the east side of Milwaukee, the only thing we knew about Oconomowoc was that it had a lot of ‘O’s,” he said, laughing. “I’m so grateful to be back on the OAC stage. Every time I show up, even during a snowstorm, the place is packed! That says everything about a community and how it supports the arts.” For more information visit www.johnmcgivern. com and see page 12

Winter Dance Party

The number one and official show for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper! “As Flawless as a chord from a Fender Stratocaster… John Mueller is living proof that Buddy Holly’s legacy will live on.” ~ Chicago Tribune By Rebecca Seymour Join rock ‘n’ roll legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson in John Mueller’s Winter Dance Party at 7 p.m. Saturday, January 11, 2020.

many more. “Buddy Holly had a lot of uptempo rock and roll numbers, as well as really beautiful ballads. Not many artists have such a wide variety of music,” added Mueller.

The unbridled, high voltage concert re-creates the 1959 final tour of Buddy, Ritchie, and the Bopper. The musicians were playing on their Winter Dance Party tour across the Midwest when they were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa.

Winter Dance Party has performed on the Jerry Lewis Telethon, toured extensively throughout the US and Canada, and even for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

John Mueller, the critically acclaimed former star of the U.S. touring version of the London/ Broadway hit musical “Buddy: the Buddy Holly Story,” performs as Buddy Holly, with Linwood Sasser as The Big Bopper, and Ray Anthony as Ritchie Valens. The very authentic and energetic four-piece band (guitar, drums, stand-up bass, and sax) also includes Grammy award-winning Mike Acosta on saxophone.

For more information visit www. winterdanceparty.com and see page 28.

“This year marks the 60th anniversary of this tragic day in rock and roll history. It’s significant because people are still very interested in their music, and we love celebrating that,” said Mueller. “We’ve been doing this show since 1999 and we’ve developed a really huge fan base, especially in the Midwest. It’s pretty cool to come back and meet the people who were at the original Winter Dance Party tour.” The concert celebrates the hit songs of the 50s by this famous trio including “That’ll Be The Day,” “La Bamba,” “Chantilly Lace,” and

“Having worked with hundreds of students over the years, I have witnessed first-hand how much students grow as performers from fifth grade to their senior year. I am proud to see students of all ages succeed doing what they love to do. The OAC is a place for them to shine! We are so fortunate to work and live in a district where the arts are valued and we can provide that opportunity to so many.” - Amy Jappinen, Nature Hill Intermediate School musical theater director and 5th grade teacher “Oconomowoc has an amazing performing arts venue … right on its own doorstep! A great addition to our district, the OAC is a perfect setting for the OASD theater productions, band, choir, and orchestra concerts, and professional artists’ shows. Our students develop and display their artistic skills in a high quality facility, and will for years to come.” - Lynne Carlstein, Silver Lake Intermediate School, choral music and musical theater director

OASD’s award-winning performing arts programs hit high notes By Rebecca Seymour More than 12 years ago, Oconomowoc made a commitment to support the dream of new, state-of-the-art facility that would provide students and the community with the highest quality cultural and educational arts experiences right in their own backyard. The creation of the Oconomowoc Arts Center has focused a spotlight on the importance of providing meaningful opportunities to engage, explore, collaborate, and be inspired through visual, creative, theatrical and musical arts. It is estimated that about 2,000 Oconomowoc Area School District students of all ages are actively participating and dedicated to achieving excellence through the performing arts, much of which plays out on the OAC’s stage. “The OAC has had an extraordinary impact on the cultural and educational quality of our school district performing arts programs. The incredible acoustics and professional setting has underscored the incredible work and talent of our students and faculty,” said Michael Duncan, OAC director (2008-18). From musical concerts and multi-faceted SLI Faculty

theatrical productions featuring the awardwinning OHS bands, choirs and drama department to amazing middle level performing arts programming from Nature Hill and Silver Lake Intermediate Schools to artsrelated opportunities for younger students, the OAC sets the stage for life-long appreciation for the arts. “The Oconomowoc Arts Center is our legacy and has made an important impact on our students. It says a lot about a community that has always supported the arts. I am so proud of all of our students. I truly believe there’s no other place like Oconomowoc – there are a lot of great things going on and art is truly alive here,” said OHS director of bands, Mike Krofta. OHS Faculty

Could it be? Yes, it could! Something’s comin’ … something good!

The Neophonic Jazz Orchestra brings the music of West Side Story and more to the OAC’s Main Stage By Rebecca Seymour Step back in time as the Neophonic Jazz Orchestra takes the OAC’s Main Stage for an unforgettable afternoon of big band and Broadway music at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14. Founded in 2010 by longtime Madison drummer, Rand Moore and Stan Kenton alumnus, Joel Kaye, this premiere 25-piece big band, jazz ensemble features the area’s finest large-group jazz musicians, including vocalist Angela Babler. In addition to the saxophone, trombone, trumpet, and rhythm sections typical of big band jazz, the NJO also boasts a section of four mellophones, a brass instrument with a timbre similar to a French horn. NJO’s collection of instruments achieves what jazz historians and Kenton enthusiasts call “a wall of sound,” a music style as exhilarating as it is rare in today’s music world. Known for its dedication to the Stan Kenton Orchestra’s unique instrumentation, NJO also pays tribute to the timeless compositions and arrangements of Johnny Richards, Kenton’s longtime friend and collaborator. Richards, a genius in his own right, was responsible

46

OCONOMOWOC ARTS CENTER | 2019-2020 SEASON

for some the Kenton Orchestra’s greatest masterpieces, including his 1962 Grammywinning album, Kenton’s West Side Story. NJO cofounder and music director, Joel Kaye studied music composition and arranging under Richards, and played saxophone in the Kenton Orchestra in the early 1960s. He is featured on six Grammy-winning albums, including Kenton’s Adventures in Jazz. “I grew up in New York City and as a kid I would go to Birdland jazz club on 52nd and Broadway to listen to Johnny Richards’ band. I joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra when I was in my 20s. It was thrilling to play with him every night. In today’s world you don’t get to hear this kind of music and we are dedicated to keeping it alive,” explained Kaye. The first half of the NJO concert on the OAC stage will feature selections from “West Side Story.” After the intermission, the band will perform a variety of Broadway music arranged for orchestra.
