A NOTE ON THE TEXT Most of the poems comprising Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats (1939) have been set to music complete and in their originally published form; a few have been subject to a minor revision of tense or pronoun, and eight lines have been added to “The Song of the Jellicles.”

However, some of our lyrics, notably the story of “Grizabella,” were discovered among the unpublished writings of Eliot.

The prologue is based on ideas and incorporates lines from another unpublished poem, entitled “Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats.”

“Memory” includes lines from and is suggested by “Rhapsody on a Windy Night” and other poems of the Prufrock period. All other words in the show are taken from The Collected Poems.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Composer) is the composer of The Likes of Us, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, By Jeeves, Evita, Variations and Tell Me On A Sunday later combined as Song & Dance, Cats, Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind, The Beautiful Game, The Woman in White and Love Never Dies.

He composed the film scores of Gumshoe and The Odessa File, and a setting of the Latin Requiem Mass Requiem. In 2004, he produced a film version of The Phantom of the Opera directed by Joel Schumacher and, in 2006, a unique spectacular version of the show in Las Vegas. His new musical Love Never Dies, which continues the story of The Phantom and Christine, opened at London’s Adelphi Theatre in March 2010.

He pioneered television casting for musical theatre with the Emmy award-winning BBC series “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?” He repeated his success with “Any Dream Will Do” which cast the title role of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and in 2008 he cast the musical Oliver! for the BBC. This year in the BBC series “Over The Rainbow” he has cast Danielle Hope in the role of Dorothy for his new theatrical production of The Wizard of Oz which opened at the London Palladium March 2011. His awards include seven Tonys, three Grammys including Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, two International Emmys, the Praemium Imperiale, and the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre and The Kennedy Center Honor. He currently owns seven London theatres including the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the London Palladium.

He was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997.

THOMAS STEARNS ELIOT (Poet and Critic) was born in St. Louis in 1888, he settled in England in 1915. Already famous for his works Prufrock and Other Observations (1917) and The Waste Land (1922), Eliot’s interests began to move toward playwriting in the mid-1920s. His best known play, Murder in the Cathedral, was commissioned for the Canterbury festival of 1935. His awards include the Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize

Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats (1939) provided much of the book for this musical. He received the Tony Award for the book of CATS in 1983, 18 years after his death.

West End theatres: The Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, Gielgud, Queen’s, Wyndham’s, Albery and The Strand. In 1995 his company received The Queen’s award for Export Achievement and he was knighted in the 1996 New Year’s Honours for his services to British Theatre.

TREVOR NUNN (Original Director) was educated at Downing College, Cambridge and in 1962 he won an ABC Director’s Scholarship to the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, whereas Resident Director, his productions included The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Peer Gynt and a musical version of Around the World in Eighty Days. In 1964, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, was made an Associate Director in 1965 and became the company’s youngest ever Artistic Director in 1968. He created The Other Place, the Donmar Warehouse and the Swan Theatre, and led the RSC into its new home in the Barbican. He was responsible for running the RSC until he retired from his post in 1986. From 1997–2003 he was Director of the National Theatre.

Theatre: His productions for the RSC included The Revenger’s Tragedy, The Relapse, The Alchemist, Henry V, The Taming of the Shrew, King Lear, Much Ado About Nothing, The Winter’s Tale, Henry VIII, Hamlet, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, Coriolanus Julius Caesar, Titus Andronicus, Romeo and Juliet, The Comedy of Errors, As You Like It, All’s Well That Ends Well, Once in a Life-time, Three Sisters, Juno and the Paycock, Othello, The Blue Angel, Measure for Measure, Henry IV, Parts I and II , The Fair Maid of the West; and with John Caird, Nicholas Nickleby (winner of five Tony Awards), JM Barrie’s Peter Pan and Les Misérables, which won eight Tony Awards and has become the most performed musical in the world. GILLIAN LYNNE, CBE (Original Associate Director and Choreographer) was instrumental in the development of jazz dance in Britain leading to ground breaking work as a director and choreographer of film, television and stage. Her 50 plus Broadway, West End and International shows, films and TV include: Tonight at Eight, Cabaret, What the World Needs Now, Gigi, The Roar of the Greasepaint, How Now Dow Jones, My Fair Lady, The Secret Garden, Halfa-Sixpence, Man of La Mancha, Yentl, “A Simple Man” (1988 BAFTA Award) and “Le Morte d’ Arthur” (Samuel G. RAYMOND HUESSY (Associate Scenic Designer) has worked in theater, opera, and film. He assisted on the Broadway companies of 42nd Street, Nicholas Nickleby, and Miss Saigon.

Since 1982, he has been John Napier’s scenic associate on most of the world’s productions of CATS (Broadway, five U.S. touring sets, two UK tours, the Canadian, German, Swiss, and two Australian productions), and on two productions each of Starlight Express (U.S. National Tour, Las Vegas Company), Miss Saigon (2nd U.S. National Tour, German Company), and Sunset Boulevard (U.S. National Tour, Australian Company). He recently moved the German company of CATS to Stuttgart from Hamburg (where it had run for nearly fifteen years) and assisted on the National Tour of the dance musical Contact. Movie work includes Dressed to Kill, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and the Chris Rock/Anthony Hopkins feature Black Sheep. ‘ DUNCAN ROBERT EDWARDS (Sound Designer) Selected theater designs include Bounce, Three, Cinderella, Parade, The Civil War, The Sound of Music, Floyd Collins, the National Tour of Fiddler on the Roof, High School Musical for Disney Theatricals, the Broadway production of LoveMusik for which he was a Drama Desk nominee, and Miss Saigon for which he received a Jeff Award for outstanding sound design in Chicago. Some of his New York theater designs include I Love You, You’re Perfect...Now Change, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare For My Father starring the late Lynn Redgrave, The Food Chain, and The Last Five Years. In addition to theater, Duncan has designed many broadcast and special event systems including the studio sound systems for “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “The Tonight Show starring Jay Leno,” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” One of his most challenging projects was the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2008 Beijing Olympics for which he was grateful for the opportunity to design. thoroughly enjoyed Andrea Bocelli’s South American and East Coast US tour. And one of his favorite ongoing projects has been the worldwide presentations of works by Pulitzer winning composer Steve Reich.

DAVID HERSEY (Lighting Designer) has designed the lighting for over 250 plays, musicals, operas and ballets. His work has been seen in most corners of the globe and his many awards include Tonys for Evita, CATS and Les Misérables and the Olivier Award for Lighting Design given in 1996. His work has been represented in London’s West End by CATS, Starlight Express and Les Miserables. He has also been active in the world of theme parks in Florida and Italy as well as lighting extravaganzas at The Mirage, Treasure Island and Bellagio Hotels in Las Vegas. He is founder of DHA Lighting which concentrates on the design of specialist lighting.

For ten years he was lighting consultant to the National and is a past Chairman of the Association of Lighting Designers. David has recently returned from a two year sabbatical during which he sailed over 38,000 miles around the world.

RICK BELZER (Lighting Adaptation) To quote his mother, “At 13 I took him to a local theatre and I haven’t seen him since!” He turned pro at age 16; at 19 he became the youngest member of the United Scenic Artists. For the past 25 years he has mainly focused on theatrical design and production. He has worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Theatre Company for 20 years and on productions of Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Starlight Express; on Broadway, Nationally and Internationally.

He, as a side line, has also designed the lighting for “Titanic”-The Artefact Exhibition. This exhibit has been in 20 cities world-wide and viewed by 10 million people in the past 5 years. Recently he completed an additional exhibit, “St. Peter and The Vatican - The Legacy of the Popes,” featuring many never seen objects from the Vatican Vaults. This production of CATS is the 18th new production Mr. Belzer has been involved with. If he only knew in 1982 what “Now and Forever” would mean! Rick hopes you enjoy his work.

KRISTEN BLODGETTE (Musical Supervisor) has been associated with CATS since 1984 when she served as Musical Director of the First National Tour. She has been involved with The Phantom of the Opera since it’s New York opening, supervising (as assistant to David Caddick) the Broadway production; the U.S. National Tours; and companies in Hamburg, Switzerland, Belgium, Copenhagen, Stuttgart, Madrid, Mexico City and Buenos Aires (2010).

International and Asian tours of West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Swing!, Cinderella, and The King and I. Talitha has also had the privilege of working on Broadway’s The Pirate Queen, preproduction and development of Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away, and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

ROBERTA ROBERTS (General Manager) is excited to be embarking on her tenth year with Troika Entertainment. Prior to her current position, Ms. Roberts was Producer for the Cruise Line Entertainment Division of Paramount Show Services International where she produced and managed 12

entertainment programs for numerous clients including Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Renaissance Cruises, Orient Lines and Cunard Line’s Queen Elizabeth II. A graduate of James Madison University, Ms. Roberts is grateful for a career that has taken her to more than 45 countries and led her to her husband, Yiannis Gianareas.

RYAN MURPHY (Production Coordinator) is currently in his fifth season as Production Coordinator with Troika Entertainment, having worked on over 30 national and international tours with a wide range of amazing artists.

Prior to joining Troika, Ryan served as the Production Supervisor and Executive Producer for The Rainbow Cubs, overseeing the creation, development, and operation of a children’s entertainment company in Niagara Falls, NY. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Ryan holds a BFA from Niagara University and an MA from The University of Rochester. Ryan would also like to thank his family, friends, and most importantly his partner Joe, for all their love and support. ­ RANDALL A. BUCK (Chief Executive Officer) has produced over 50 productions across the globe for Troika Entertainment. Before joining Troika in 1999, Mr. Buck was Vice President and General Manager for Livent in Toronto. While working for Livent, he managed productions such as Fosse, Ragtime, Show Boat, Music of the Night, and Kiss of the Spider Woman. Mr. Buck was a stage manager for more than 20 years, surviving a year with Mary Martin & Carol Channing in Jimmy Kirkwood’s Legends!, a year in Japan with Siegfried & Roy, opening The Phantom of the Opera Music Box Company and opening Show Boat! on Broadway. Since beginning as an apprentice with The Kenley Players in the late 60s, he has had the privilege of working closely with visionaries such as Twyla Tharp, Susan Stroman, Hal Prince, Joe Layton & Josh Logan, plus hundreds of stars. Mr. Buck had the privilege of recently serving on the board for the National Alliance of Music Theater.

Randy is currently living happily-ever-after in the Washington, DC area with his wife, Angela, and their daughter Sierra Ashley Buck.

DONALD KINDL (Chief Financial Officer) graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1982 and again in 1988 with his Masters in Business Administration. He began his career with Combustion Engineering in Windsor, CT in 1982, and moved to Maryland in 1992 to assume the position of Comptroller for various theatrical productions. In his current position he oversees the daily operations of all aspects of finance and management information systems. Mr. Kindl and his lovely wife, Cindy, are the proud parents of three wonderful children: Stephen, Stacey and Scott.
