PERÔ OR THE MYSTERIES OF THE NIGHT One morning, in the tiny village of Fanghetto, there is no fresh bread. A notice pinned to the bakery door reads: Closed (due to lovesickness). What has happened? Perô, the baker, is unhappy. The girl next door, Colombina, who he has been in love ever since she started school, has run off with Paletino, the painter/decorator. Will Colombina ever end up loving shy Perô? Or has Paletino enchanted her forever with his lively colours and happy small-talk? The premier of Perô or the Secrets of the Night was a tremendous success in 1994, drawing full audiences. Perô went on an international tour.

The play is based on Pierrot ou les secrets de la nuit, a children’s book written by the French author/philosopher Michel Tournier. Guus Ponsioen adapted the story and composed the music. In the new version, Annemarie Maas and Guus Ponsioen again play the musicians’ roles of Sun and Moon. The young puppeteers/actors Inez de Bruijn and Tim Velraeds play the roles of Perô, Colombina and Paletino. Perô or the mysteries of the night received several awards, last but not least in January 2008 when the performance received the Victor Award at the International Showcase in Tampa, Florida.

SPEELTHEATER HOLLAND Speeltheater Holland was founded in 1976 by Saskia Janse and Onny Huisink. Since then it has developed into a touring theatre company with a core of ten permanent members that has its base in Edam, The Netherlands. Speeltheater Holland creates theatre performances (mainly) intended for children. Highly important in the production of plays are artistic quality and the development of a personal style. The productions include the use of puppets combined with theatre and/ or other theatrical disciplines. For each production Speeltheater Holland uses different (puppet) techniques and other theatrical means. However all performances share a strong visual sense. For each production Speeltheater Holland engages new actors, puppeteers and sometimes guest directors, and if required, depending on the nature of the performance, other experts such as composers, musicians, authors, choreographers, etc. In addition to developing and presenting performances Speeltheater Holland also seeks to be a breeding ground for young (puppet) theatre makers and a place where new forms of co-operation can be experimented with. To this end,

small-scale projects are regularly set up in Speeltheater Holland’s own theatre. Speeltheater Holland performs in smaller and medium-sized theatres and prefers black box auditoriums. Speeltheater Holland received various prizes and nominations for their productions. In 2007 Speeltheater Holland was awarded a prize for their long and outstanding contribution to children’s theatre in the Netherlands. They also received three awards for the performance of Perô or the mysteries of the night, one of which was in Zagreb, Croatia. Speeltheater Holland has always strived to perform its productions in an international scene. Most of the international productions are based in the United States but tours have also included Austria, The United Kingdom, Belgium, Croatia, Bonaire, Germany and, in 2006, South Africa. Since 1997 Speeltheater Holland has maintained an alliance with the Seattle Children’s Theatre. This alliance has resulted in many successful productions. Speeltheater Holland is structurally subsidized by the Performing Arts Fund NL and the Provincial authority of North-Holland. Pero | Overture Center 3

THE ARTISTS TIMMY VELRAEDS (actor) quickly knew that he wanted to work in the puppet theatre business during his theatre studies in Zwolle and Amsterdam. Due to the inspiring guidance from Elout Hol (Theater Gnaffel), Timmy learned the essentials of working with puppets and performed in several shows. Besides performing, Timmy is also active as director and production assistant at both Stuffed Puppet Theater (supervised by Neville Tranter) and Quade&Paive (supervised by Ulrike Quade). Furthermore, Timmy is theatre producer of the street performance group Tiramisu. Together with Meike van den Akker and Marlyn Coetsier, Timmy belongs to a new and inspiring generation in puppet theatre in the Netherlands.

Ever since, Guus wrote a lot of music and lyrics for several national and international theatre groups for example the Freiburger Kinder- und Jugendtheater in Germany or theatre group Wederzijds, where several co-productions with writer and director Ad de Bont were made.
