PROGRAM - Théâtre de l’Œil Founded in Montreal in 1973, Théâtre de l’Œil is dedicated to the creation and performance of puppet shows. Both entertaining and full of meaning, its productions bear witness to the company’s spirit of innovation and the conviction that visual language can touch an audience and stir the imagination.

By discovering Théâtre de l’Œil, thousands of spectators have also encountered new faces of a large family whose origins go back to the beginning of time: the grand family of puppetry.

In our Montreal workshops, more than twenty original productions have been created which, like the hundreds of

STORY At the heart of the forest, a dump. A cemetery of inanimate objects teeming with life... A squirrel digs in the garbage and finds a camera on a tripod. It just takes a butterfly alighting inside the camera body for it to spring suddenly to life. A three-legged cyclops that is both a microscope and a telescope, Camera discovers with its new eye an environment in movement.

At the heart of the forest, we come across all kinds of creatures: a pilfering squirrel, an old ailing bear, Philomène, a Grandmother of Nature full of wisdom

and possibilities, butterflies, a young Doe with gentle eyes, an ant who travels by balloon, and baby birds…

In this forest, we are witness to the eternal cycle of the seasons. We see the moon rising and leaves falling.

Sur 3 pattes / 3-Legged Tale is a story without words, a poetic reflection on the cycle of life, of time that passes and that changes us, on life which is in constant rebirth, like grass that grows again after a field fire or flowers that appear after the snow.

A choice made by the designers, Simon Boudreault and Richard Lacroix. This is straightforward for Richard, a man of images, but for Simon, a man of words, it

has been quite a challenge! It brings poetry to life with more imagery: what we cannot say must be made comprehensible by the images. As such, we are closer to puppetry.

SIMON BOUDREAULT - CO-AUTHOR AND STAGE DIRECTOR To write a show without words, a working method must first be invented. Writing down the stage directing, describing the actions, setting up the environment…

this is descriptive writing, a bit like stage directions. Collaborating with Richard was very enriching -- he “visualises” writing; we worked a lot with maquettes.

RICHARD LACROIX - CO-AUTHOR AND PUPPETS, SET AND PROPS DESIGN Philomène is a character from my childhood, an aboriginal woman I frequented for a long time, who spoke neither English nor French. In the show, she has become a Nature-Goddess. She gives life, symbolised by butterflies, and

she gives death, by pulling the leaves off of trees. The forest is continuity, transformation. The notion of grief does not exist in the forest. The seed does not die to become a flower, it transforms itself.

has taught manipulation techniques and led workshops at the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Montréal and for the Association québécoise des marionnettistes (the Quebec puppeteer association).

Fascinated by string marionettes that he saw during television interludes, by the age of 14, Jean Cummings started making puppets. At 27, he arrived in Montreal and made puppetry his profession. A puppeteer with Théâtre de l’Œil since 1987, he has worked on ten productions with the company, almost 25 years of experience. For him, “being a puppeteer means knowing how to do everything, from building to repairing, from setting up the set to the Q&A after the show.”

With skill and good humour, he led the workshop team like a pro, while his ingenuity did the rest… Other companies are grateful for his talents, such as Théâtre Motus, Qui va là, Théâtre Ink and Théâtre Magasin. He has participated in film shorts featuring hand or string puppets, 4

Graham Soul - Stamoé

Hand or string, tiny or giant, Graham Soul loves puppets and the feeling is mutual.

With Dynamo Théâtre, Théâtre Sans Fil or Théâtre de la Dame de Cœur, for film shorts or commercials, he has been exercising his talents as a manipulator and acrobat for more than twenty years.

He also started young: at seven years old he told his parents he was going to be a puppeteer, “without knowing why this art form captivated me so much,” Graham admits. Graham is both efficient and discreet, essential qualities for the

BIOS profession. A member of The Star Keeper team since its premiere in 1997, Graham Soul also took part in the adventures of La Cité des Loups, Un secret de Polichinelle and 3-Legged Tale. Faithful to Théâtre de l’Œil, he is also the official translator of the company’s documents into English.

After manipulating puppets with Théâtre de la Dame de Cœur, Théâtre Sans Fil and Cirque du Soleil, and after taking a directing workshop for puppetry led by Martine Beaulne and Jean Cummings, Stéphane Heine was surprised to find himself dreaming about Théâtre de l’Œil.

With a definite talent for acting and an interest in manual labour, he was an ideal candidate for puppetry.

For this young actor trained at the Université du Québec à Montréal, After performing in 3-Legged Tale, The Star Keeper is his second collaboration with the company, “and it’s a great opportunity for me to develop my skills with people who have a lot of experience – you learn so much quicker!” says Stéphane, appreciatively. But what he likes the most, besides the team spirit, “is to let the puppet take the spotlight.”

Unlike the three other rogues of this team of musketeers, Myriame Larose first “encountered” puppets at university, after training in dance and theatre: “A very important encounter!” she adds.

“The puppet possesses a language that suits me; it’s a way of expressing yourself beyond words, with a body that is not mine, somewhere between theatre and dance.”

With a diploma from the DESS program in [contemporary] puppet theatre at UQÀM and trained in acting, Myriame discovered Théâtre de l’Œil while participating in a workshop led by Jean Cummings: “For 3-Legged Tale, it was a gift to work with renowned designers, with great working conditions and with a company that allows us time to explore.

Jean and Graham know how to share their experience; they give us pointers that would have taken us years to discover! My accelerated training has continued with this opportunity to work on The Star Keeper!”
